Is Tim Burton a Good Director?

Tim Burton use to be one of the most visionary filmmakers in Hollywood, now I think he's still a good filmmaker but he's just past him prime.

From 1985 to 1999, Burton's consistency and brilliance is simply unmatched as a genre filmmaker. From those years is simply my favorite filmography. But after that Burton really sort of started to take it easier and probably became more comfortable. He's just no longer a thriving young artist trying to prove himself in a place he may not belong. I mean I still like him but in the past decade, Sweeney Todd is the only film of his I would call a masterpiece.

He definitely is. Like most directors, Tim Burton is known for having his style. His work stands out because his films are very unique. It's hard to say the same about majority of films nowadays. His movies are easy to enjoy and follow along. It's not like his films are complicated or have a lot of things going on at once to the point you lose track of the story, yet the quality still turns out to be rich.

HOWEVER.... the most recent Tim Burton film I watched was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory so I really have no idea how terrific or lousy his new films are like.

Sweeney Todd is pretty good.

Alice in Wonderland was a let down. Give it a miss.

Burton is a unique director but he's very one note.

I'm not a fan of most of his movies (or his overall take on Batman) but there's no denying he's a talented director.

No doubt burton has directed some great movies and has very unique and impressive visuals. But what stops be from still considering him a great director is that he hasn't done anything new in like a decade. He hasnt evolved or developed or progressed as a director, in fact I feel he's regressed. His movies are more misses than hits. He's become too comfortable in his tim burton formula. He just bores me now and I could care less for his films. I can't be impressed by the same thing over and over movie after movie. Give me something new.

Actually I tihnk he changed quite a bit and thats why I dont think his new movies are as good as his classics. The last movie done with that Burton formula was probably Batman Returns, and Im talking about Gothic environment, black and white colors and expressionist designs, plus lots of stripes and spirals. I consider Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman Returns and Corpse Bride to the the classic Burtonesque movies

I'm not a fan of most of his movies (or his overall take on Batman) but there's no denying he's a talented director.

Hes better at fairy tale stuff like Edward Scissorhands. Not Batman.
