It's Clobbering Time! The Ben Grimm/ Thing moments we want to see in the MCU

I could stare at these all day.

It’s the first time we’ve ever seen Ben actually looking real.

You can see with this one how the “rocks” move around to allow him to move his face. But they stay rigid so it feels like they are actually hard.

That was the big problem with the Chiklis suit for me. When he spoke or moved the rocks wrinkled and it was obvious he was a guy in a rubber suit. I could never make myself believe he had rocky skin.

I’m going back and reading the first page of this discussion and I feel like they hit a home-run with the visuals we were hoping for.

I’m not sure about whether it’s a good idea to not change his voice at all but he looks great. Definitely much better than the Chiklis version that looked like a burn victim or the Jamie Bell version who looked like a cross between the Rock Biter and dried out turd.

I was taken back a little first time watching it, but upon subsequent rewatches, I think Moss-Bachrach's regular voice will work at the end of the day. Though if it were up to me though, I'd add some extra bass.

Considering this seems to be THE complaint (in addition to Galactus being too small which isn’t worth justifying with a comment) I wouldn’t be surprised if they do something with it.

Since they’re still doing effects EMB probably hasn’t even started voice dubbing, so he could give it more of a harsh quality if he wants.

Or I’m sure they can easily digitally modify it if that would sound better.

On the topic of the recent discourse surrounding The Thing’s voice, while perusing around the internet, I remembered hearing or reading about Jack Kirby being the inspiration for Ben Grimm/The Thing, so I did a little YouTube search for some videos of Kirby talking, and I came across something interesting:

Now, here’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s voice for Ben again (from 0:15-0:35):

And here’s a video of him on a late night show from some months back speaking regularly:

The voice he’s putting on for the character he’s playing is clearly a bit different than his normal voice, and I think that’s because he’s trying to emulate Jack Kirby‘s slightly lower registered, gruff and carefully deliberate way of speaking as a way of paying homage and honoring the origin of the character. Now, his voice in the trailer is a little bit higher then Jack’s, but I think the spirit and intention is still there. Makes me wonder if he decided to or someone had him watch some of his old interviews for research to get an idea of how to imitate it.

At least for me, as someone who didn’t really mind the voice to begin with, this really makes me appreciate that acting choice even more, if that’s the case, which I think is very possible.

I miss the deep voice for Ben Grimm. Does anyone think we'll see a shirtless Thing though? I don't mind the sweater or shirts, but ultimately love him as the orange rock wearing blue pants.

Everything about him looks great but my favourite thing has to be the big blue eyes. And I like his voice too. Honestly forgot about his usual deep, gravely voice when watching the trailer; didn’t even realise that the voice being normal was different from the norm until I saw people talking about it online.

Plenty of time for that in post prod.

I'm sure Marvel Studios are aware of this. Though I wouldn't be surprised if they don't change his voice.

Personally, I'm glad they didn't overly change his voice. I'd have liked a heavier New York accent, but the possible Kirby inspiration is neat. The fact that Ben on the inside hasn't changed, only his exterior, is so important to his character, and I think that not modulating his voice to sound "rocky" is a very good way to emphasize that.

Has it ever been explained anywhere why as the Thing, Ben Grimm only has 4 fingers?

IMG_7263.jpegI hope this means Ben won’t be wearing his full uniform through the whole film.

We saw him without his sweater in the scene with him pulling the boat.

Something still doesn't look quite right with Ben Grimm here. Maybe they tried to give him lips? But his head also looks too small or something. Even in footage it's not 100% there.

The head can sometimes look a bit small especially with that huge body. But visually, I'm fine with his look. I also warmed up to the voice as well.

This particular photo definitely looks off, but there is something in his face in the trailers that also looks a bit off.

I think they went a little too small with his chin and mouth. They didn’t give him the very broad lower part of his face that Kirby and others have drawn.

I’d also like to see his brow a little bigger, blockier and more defined, and I’d like his hands to be a little bigger.

But those are all minor details, and overall, I LOVE the design.
