I've been hit with the YLOD

As the title says... I've been hit with the dreaded YLOD and there was absolutely nothing to indicate that it was going to happen. The fans sounded normal, the console is a little lukewarm but nothing out of the ordinary it just happened.

Now I'm PS3-less until I get the chance to contact the customer service department and get a replacement so god knows how long that will be.

Which model is it? A launch 20GB or 60GB?

From my understanding, the YLOD only really hits the launch models -- 20GB or 60GB. Might have to get a new one.

I'm going to phone them in the morning to see what they say. If I have to pay then so be it but hopefully they'll do it for free.

But seriously, that sucks dude. I saw you playing earlier, its so annoying how it just hits like that isn't it? Its happened to me twice now.

Its a bigger problem than people realise, just RROD means it has been brought to attention as much.

I was originally going to joke about you trying to catch up with me

I was playing Killzone and then Mercenaries 2 when it froze then started flashing the red light before going off (So that game is stuck in there). Tried turning it on and it gave the little yellow flash before going off. Everyone knows how often my PS3 is on and it never gave any indications of overheating so it just came as a shock but I'll just pay the £150 or whatever to get it sorted and get Continuous Play this time.

How long did they generally take to get it back to you?

The ironic thing is a friend of mine had said that he'd loan me his if it ever failed... he left to catch a plane to the US about 2 hours before it happened.

Um, well it ranges... greatly. First time, they got me a new one in 2 days. I was chuffed.

Next time it took 3 weeks. Bloody murder.

It comes a day after I gained access to the "locked" areas of Xi in Home and also got my Killzone costumes. If it had failed earlier in the day I would have a back up console to tide me over but the timing was awful.

Nothing can be done now though so I'll have to suffer without my blurays and games until it's back.

Shame. I got the YLOD once after my PS3 took some physical damage from being dropped. I had to pay $150 to get it replaced since my 2 year warrenty was expired.

i called them bout my messed up ps3 ( you might of seen the thread) they charged me £140 for a new one. due to come on 2 april. so in all i had to wait 2 weeks in total. or i will have by 2nd april lol

Hmm i bought my 60 gb backwards compatible PS3 the same time as yours and mine has been acting strange i think the end is coming soon to my PS3 as well

£145 (Half the price of a brand new 80Gb) to fix it because I live in Northern Ireland

The girl I spoke to on the phone was a cheeky one at that. The odd thing that she said though was that consoles purchased before September 2007 are now out of warranty and when I told her that others had had their repairs done for free she claimed never to hear of such a thing.

Now I have to go talk nicely to the bank to extend my overdraft so I can sort it out. I'll try to get a new 80Gb console from them though.

I forgot to mention that my "console has overheated due to excessive use" according to Sony customer services.

It's an absolute joke of a service.

they where really nice to me. i called them and it was sorted straight away in like 10 mins. i was very impressed with them actually. I was just happy i could get a good as new 60gb console again so it has BC still. that was the main thing i was not happy about loosing.

I'm trying something out that could save me £145.

I purchased the Continuous Play package and I'll wait a few days to contact them about my console. With any luck it'll work and I'll have a replacement by the end of next week. If not then I'll still have Continuous Play for security.

What does YLOD do? I never heard of it.

It pretty much makes the console useless. When you press the power to come on the green light flashes yellow and then goes red. In other words, it simply wont turn on at all. Sony deny that it's a hardware fault present from the beginning but there must be something going on as it's becomming more common to hear about it now.

There's no way to get the disk out if you have one in there either so you have to wait for Sony to send that back seperately.

Anyway, I'm still gathering up the cash in case my plan doesn't work and if it does then hell, I'll have £150 handy.
