I've seen a lot of action movies with Tom Cruise and never had an issue with his height before. I don't see how it could be an issue in this film. I hope it stays in theaters for another week , I've been meaning to see it.

I've never read the books, but it wasn't an issue for me in the film.

Apparently the author of the Jack Reacher books didn't find it a big deal either... I read some quote where he was saying Cruise nailed the part.

Phantasm, the author just wants those paydays and residuals. I think he was happier they were making a movie of his stuff and how he could stand to benefit from that.

They've already paid him though. He can say whatever he wants and it wouldnt matter, he still gets the payday.

Good point. See Anne Rice and what she had to say at first about Cruise as Lestat, before she retracted and changed her opinion.

Authors get paydays and disapprove of the film adaption all the time anyways. See Stephen King and others as examples. The author isn't obligated to praise the film in any way, and often they don't.

Not all of them do ;) .

Again I liked Cruise in the role, I think its a minor thing. For years Cruise has been a shorter guy that the camera has cheated as being taller.

I think how he embodies the role is much more important and I think he did a good job here.

I understand dedicated fans and how they envision a certain type for what the character should look like, but to me this isn't as bad as say casting Keanu as John Constantine.

I saw this on the Jack Reacher character wiki information file:

He is exceptionally strong, has a high stamina, but is not a good runner.

That's why we didn't get the customary Cruise running sequence!

Actually, if I stated my true suspicions about Cruise, I think most people here would jump down my throat.

Well yeah, the TMZ stuff belongs in the celebrity section.

Which I've been saying, but in the internet and real circles that I frequent, I don't find too many US people, Cruise crazy.

My point was that in the US you tend to take your gossip and pop culture stuff more seriously than the rest do in general. Plenty of other movies with big stars have not made the bank some expected, although I'm not convinced anymore was expected of Reacher.

Exactly and Child is not known for pulling punches and at his age has no need to.

But Clooney, Pitt aren't necessarily action film stars. Cruise "had" that reputation, and it can be argued that his age and recent public issues which yes in the US CAN effect a star's movie has caused his star to dwindle.

I think Clooney and Pitt's are at the height of their careers now when it comes to dramatic work, so I applaud them.

A star is a star, the idea being they can open pictures, Hanks was never an action movie star but his films made huge bank. Cruise also is not an action movie star outside of Mission Impossible and the one off Knight & Day. The Firm, Collateral, Born on the 4th of July, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, Minority Report, Days of Thunder, Rain Man etc...none of these are action movies and neither is Reacher, it has a car chase and a fairly basic shoot-out.

Pitt and Clooney has went the way of wanting to appeal to critics so I wouldn't put them in the same bracket as Cruise, Smith etc...But look at The Tourist, it had two big stars and cost a $100M to make and it made less domestically than Reacher even with a romantic element. The bottom line is it just depends what catches on and what time a movie is released.

That and The Tourist has to be one of the worst movies I've seen, especially considering the talent.

I haven't seen Rock of Ages, but I heard he was really good in that. I've also seen it on Broadway, so I know it's not about his character but the trailers/commercials really made it seem like he was a major star in it. Again, is this like everything else, this wasn't promoted right?

If you want to use the Tourist, with international grosses almost tripled what it cost to make but yeah like Octoberist said, I heard it was kinda bad.

I'll agree for the most part that there's no real way to gauge what movie would hit and based on what star.

If we were talking China or Japan, I'll say that Cruise is as popular there as he ever was. But here, Cruise regardless of his acting ability, he's been openly mocked for years. Maybe with the divorce behind him and him keeping more of a low profile, his career can take an upswing.

I just don't see how it's so far fetched to think that yeah, his popularity took a hit for the past few years in the US.

I think his popularity is bigger internationally than in the states at this point (not to say he's not popular here. He's not as popular.) Hence why I think he's hooking himself up with many sci-fi/genre films for the next few years; to capture the geek market. He's smart.

You do have to admit "Jack Reacher" would be the ultimate porn name.

Wooo. I've said it many times. If Tom Cruise wants it to happen than it will. He has so much pull in Hollywood.

Yaaas sequel please and 19th 200 mill movie thats wild.

Good to see sense restored at Paramount.

:highfive:

I couldn't believe the initial reports. They are going to make a healthy, healthy profit on just the home video release and that isn't even taking into account that the movie clearly made money in theaters. Oh, and the movie is damn good.

I recently went to see the new Die Hard flick and seeing the ******ed ******** in that movie made me dig up my account and post this.
Reacher was surprisingly refreshing - the trailer made it look like a generic action movie (as opposed to a trailer for a "Die Hard" movie), but as it turned out, it was so much more than that (as opposed to the "Die Hard" movie).
The action was absolutely fantastic, no shaky-in-their-faces-cam, overly choreographed dance-fighting or larger than life stunts and explosions that would pancake any real person.
