Saw a today.

It's a very good film, really well written and directed. Jake Gyllenhaal gives another supremely engaging performance.

Showdown!

I love when an actor gets lost in a performance and while doing that takes the audience with him. One of the best character performances I've seen in a while period.

It's interesting film but I don't think it's extraordinary. I just saw it, and although I enjoyed it, and felt it was well done, I don't think I'll be thinking about it in a week.

I agree. I think I posted something about it a page or two back. The music just didn't work for me in this movie.
The music worked perfectly for me.

It was twisted, just like the Bloom's point of view. You get this cheery and uplifting score which matched with Bloom's entrepreneurial spirit but completely clashed with his completely rotten actions throughout the film.

You get instances where that same "happy" score works to a creepy and unsettling effect.

I really thought JNH did a great job with it.

Exactly. The music takes on Bloom's POV cheering the reprehensible, setting the film up to be a success story. Plus the music is gorgeous.

Amazing performance in a very interesting film. One of the years best.

Bloom is probably my favorite character and performance of the 2014.

This film will only gain more of a following over the years. I honestly see it as the modern day Taxi Driver. Is it an instant classic like Taxi Driver? No, but with time, it will only gain more recognition, especially Louis Bloom as a character.

total BS that Jake G. didn't get an Oscar nomination for his role in this movie :down

Truly exceptional performance films are rarely recognized by the Academy, so I am use to it. How many Oscars does Scorsese have again?

As great and deserving Jake is, I automatically ruled him out of a nomination when I saw this months back just because this is not the type of movie that the AMPAS leans towards. It's just too weird for them. I made the mistake of having hope when he hit all the precursors. Just goes to show that even if all the other awards bodies try their hardest to predict the Oscars, they still couldn't get the AMPAS 100% right.

Like I said in the Oscars thread though, his snub here will just help him next year. The Academy has a tendency to make up for their mistakes every now and then. :p

What does he have coming up that could get him an nomination?

I don't care about awards, this was my favorite performance this year.

He has Southpaw and Demolition. Southpaw is Weinstein backed and has him transformed to a jacked up boxer. Demolition is directed by the one who did Dallas Buyers Club and Wild (who both got his leads and supporting players nominated).

Ah, forgot about Southpaw. Mainly because I still don't believe that is him. He is quickly becoming the new Bale in his variety. Thanks.

He will lose to Leo. :o

The Revenant will finally get him his oscar.

Nightcrawler was a 9/10 for me. I was totally into the movie and wanted another half hour

I didn't think it was an amazing film but a very good one though. Gyllenhaal is a chameleon, he really was very creepy in this role and totally owned it. He's fastly becoming one of my favorite. Loved him in Prisoners and End of Watch and this is another great turn for him.

Again, I don't QUITE see this being "movie of the year" material but a very solid, dark film.

P.S. I've been looking all over the net but I seem to be the only one who noticed a very BIG goof up early in the film when Gyllenhaal approaches the crime scene at the mansion, there's a shot where you can CLEARLY see a camera man in the background by the bushes and they focus on it for a solid 5-7 seconds. I am SHOCKED that no one caught that in the editing process.

8/10
