James Bond: 007 - Spectre

QOS with the best cinematography?? That was a pain to watch. So dull and dreary and terrible camerawork. That was the worst-looking cinematography in the series.

I think some people are confusing pretty locations with cinematography. QoS rarely seemed to use lighting and shadow or interesting camera angles to build atmosphere, mood, or evoke the film's themes. It's been a while since I have seen it but I recall it being overly bright and bland.

No, I think the difference is that QoS is very bright, lots of orange, desert and sunny locations. Skyfall had some very interesting places to show-off the cinematographer's work, like the Shanghai sequence, Silva's hiding place or the third act with that blue/orange contrast from the night and the burning house.

A great cinematographer can make anything look like a million dollars. The one on Quantum of Solace was not one of them. Not that it was a horrible job by any means, but it is nothing compared to Skyfall. It still pisses me off that it got robbed at the Oscars.

I'm really excited to see the kinds of visuals Hoytema can bring working with Mendes. Particularly after Interstellar. (Maybe Mendes will take after Nolan again and utilize more IMAX cameras, especially since Nolan started to handhold those like a GoPro) I didn't pay very much attention to cinematography to begin with when watching and analyzing films but Deakins and Mendes opened my mind and just blew me away with Skyfall.

QoS was alright in some areas cinematographically, I think the final fight at Greene's Bolivian estate was rather nice visually. They had good practical effects and I think at times having this bright, almost monotone and bleached look can be good, but if you asked me to choose between QoS and Skyfall, then Skyfall by far.

I think some of the action scenes were just really poorly directed. The minor skirmish he had in that one room was nice for its brutality, but the opening car chase and subsequent fight with Mitchell was just so shaky. We had already seen the money shot where Bond flips up and shoots, which was nice, but everything leading up to that was rather poor. And I'm not totally against shaky cam, stuff like The Winter Soldier and the Bourne films had shaky cam I could live with and enjoy, but QoS not so much.

The plane fight was rather nice though.

Slightly tangential, but Amazon.com is currently having a 50% off sale for all Fleming written Bond books. I've never read the books, but I've always been keen to, and since the Spectre announcement I'm particularly hyped.

I'll get a few of them, so I'm looking for recommendations. Casino Royale is already in. Go for it everybody. :)

Die Another Day didn't have great cinematography either. That looked rather dull as well.

That was a straight up robbery. They awarded CGI, not cinematography that year. Skyfall is an all time beautiful film.

I was worried about Spectre with no Deakins, but then I saw Interstellar and learned the film would be shot on film.

The longer the movie went on the stupider it became

The obvious CGI dive off the cliff by Halle Berry

The PS1 graphics for the para sail scene

The invisible car

Emperor Palpatine lightning

Slow mo just for the sake of Slow mo with Zao's coat

It's not surprising that QOS and DAD, two of the Bond films with the worst cinematography, are also two of my least favorite Bond movies.

I'm actually quite fond of QoS. Yes, it's the weakest of Craig's Bond films but I enjoy it nonetheless as I definately dont think its anywhere near as bad as some make out. Hell, I dont even think its bad. I'd watch it any day in preference to DAD and I cant beleive its being mentioned in the same breath as that giant turd.

Deakins should have won cinematographer and Skyfall should have made nominated for best picture .......I am pretty sure it was very close to nomination but did not make it in......I guess adele win make up that loss

I really liked Hoytema's tinker tailor soldier spy cinematography.

Mendes has said the artist for Spectre has been secured, and he knows who it is. I hope this means Thomas Newman can incorporate more of this song's melody into the score. That would be fantastic.

Is the song actually going to be called Spectre?

I think it would be a great title for a song.

Now get Regina Spektor to do it, and you'd get some great marketing as well.

The shot of Bond of the boat entering the floating casino, or on the motorbike in Istanbul, or the fight with Patrice in the hotel, or Hell even some of the shots of London, were all better than anything in QOS. And there's no ADD editing that makes it impossible to tell WTH is going on in the action scenes either.
