James Bond 24 - Part 3

Bond needs to return to the epically stirring big-band theme music of the past. The first few bars of this piece from Thunderball capture just what I mean:

I don't think it is a problem if it gives the movie a slightly retro flavour; that style of music is so iconic and evocative that it should remain a staple of the franchise.

I'm afraid I need to disagree regwec. As much as I love Barry's bombast, that sort of idea gave over a decade of Arnold doing a mediocre John Barry impression. Personally, I prefered the originality of Skyfall's score and, in particular, how Newman's effectiveness at atmospheric espionage scoring. However, his action scoring could be improved.

DKDetective better watch where he stands or parks his butt from now on :o

Oh please, I ain't afraid of Reg Stravro Bloweg. I can take whatever he throws at me. It's not like I'm Bond and have a blonde half-Italian, half-English lady friend who he could kill to get back at me... Oh wait

Cool Bond-related story, I recently got my tailor to make me a bespoke near-replica of Connery's light grey three-piece suit from Goldfinger. Pageboy waistcoat with lapels, English forward pleats, and button side adjusters, and all...

I think there will always be room for lush elegance in Bond scores, and it hasn't disappeared. Case in point 'Brave New World', 'Modigliani', 'Severine', 'Komodo Dragon' and 'The Chimera' to name a few from Skyfall. I definitely agree with your forward thinking mindset. Trying to do an imitation of someone else often doesn't work, and I'd rather new composers embrace their own sound, not anothers.

I once photoshopped my head onto Connery wearing that suit :D

It is pretty awesome. Cool story, Anthony Sinclair, Connery's tailor from the Bond films has been revived by David Mason working together with one of Sinclair's surviving apprentices. http://www.anthonysinclair.com/
I can't afford them and I'm on the other side of the Atlantic, but it's great to see the tradition being kept alive.

Speaking of Bond and suits, as much as I love Skyfall, I really hope that Mendes does not bring Temime back for Bond 24. Craig, given the themes of the film and Bond's characterization as being old-fashioned, looked stupid in those overly tight, hyper fashionable suits. Tom Ford is great and his tailoring takes a lot of cues from classic English style, which is perfect for Bond, but Temime had the suits fitted horribly in an attempt to follow current skinny suit trends. I have seen others wearing that model of suit from Tom Ford's line and when properly fitted as Ford intended, they look great.

Oh I totally agree about lush elegance. I just don't think that it has to always be done in the Barry big brass style. The score needs balance. I think that people sometimes forget that the original version of the Bond theme was more jazzy with the twangy guitar and such. It had a very modern-jetset style for the time. It was perfect for international secret agent.

If Mendes keeps Newman for the next go around, I would really like to see him put his own stamp on the Bond theme, instead of just re-recording Arnold's arrangement from Casino Royale. I would also like to hear the title theme's melody incorporated more into the score, but all told, I like what Newman was doing.

The skinny suits were quite amusing, but I rather enjoyed the look as a signal of the film's era. I always enjoy Roger Moore's massive collars, double breasted jackets and flared trousers for the same reason.

I agree that the next movie should move along, however.

The best suits Craig wore were in QoS; those Tom Ford suits were a perfect fit/tailoring.

Agreed! Bond was sharp as **** in QOS. I personally think that overall QOS is one of the sharpest looking Bond films made. The suits, the sets, the lighting, everything was just damn good looking. Which makes that damn shaky cam and Marc's schizo framing and cutting all the worse.

cannot wait for the ads and trailers to hit, so far QOS has my fave of the Craig ones

Agreed. The wider shoulders, lapels and suppressed waist of the jackets were really flattering on Craig's athletic physique. In contrast, I found the overly tight fit of the Skyfall suits just made Craig look short and blocky.

However, I must admit that the fabrics in Skyfall were better. They were reminiscent of Connery with classic English patterns like grey Glen Plaid and Skarkskin.

Had to vote Parker for two reasons:

1. He's from Jersey City
2. Swayer can be grating on the soul

As if you had a soul to begin with. :o
You should beat Sawyer easily, as everyone hates him.

I haven't interacted with you much, but thanks for the input. I'll remember to store it in my filing system under O for "Opinions I just don't give a crap about". :o:up:
I always thought Sawyer was a female? :wow:

Hey, you assumed, I just never corrected you.
Yes, and the Bond and Bat crew stick together.

Hey, I've been Bat-crew since age 3. :o

I did like the other clothes that Bond wore in Skyfall other then the suits. The Billy Reid Peacoat and the Barbour wax jacket are awesome. But QOS hands down wins the race in the Bond style stakes. I loved everything he wore in that film especially the Tom Ford Harrington Jacket for the films climax.

I can understand that. For me, it is more like the problem with the TDK batsuit. You have one of the best films involving the character, but they somehow screwed up the main character's trademark costume of all things. lol Now that I think about it, Licence to Kill is also that way - awesome Bond film that draws heavily on the Fleming books, but Bond wears horribly dated, extremely fashionable clothes.

Oh totally, I loved the Billy Reid peacoat and Barbour wax jacket. They were both awesome and Bondian. The Bill Reid peacoat especially in how it drew on Bond's naval background, but elevated it with a little extra civilian elegance with small touches like the peak lapels, horn buttons, and a bit more shape at the waist than a typical peacoat.

In fact I loved them so much I went out and bought a Peacoat, a Harrington Jacket and a Barbour coat haha
