Wouf...one of the best times I've had in the cinema, the crowd i was with went crazy every 10-15 minutes. Easily one of the best bonds ever, if Casino Royale shook up the formula, Skyfall takes a sledgehammer to it...yet strangely it still manages to be the only bond film that isn't ashamed or condenscending towards it's past, it doesn't dilute 50 years into shameless winks and nudges...it injects the history into it's veins, the bond feel and tone is rampant throughout the whole film, it may be a completely different type of Bond film but the old feelings are still there, much more effective than Die Another Day which just slammed a modern version of an old bond trope in your face every 20 minutes.
I can also say that Craig is now officially my favourite bond, only he can mix parts of Dalton/Connery and Moore in one performance and still not manage to feel wholly derivative, he makes it his own. Also interesting to note is how a Bond film has finally stopped that annoying structure of basically stringing together spectacular action pieces with a mostly empty story on top. The plot in skyfall is basic, some might say it's thin, but most of the meat is entirely in the subtext and character depth and it makes every action scene that much more frightening, thrilling and intense. It's one thing to know whats at stake and see someone fight for it, but to truly believe and feel for what the protagonist is trying to fight for/protect elevates the action to a whole 'nother level, and I fear some of the more "rigid and traditional" bond fans won't be able to grasp that after 50 years of superficiality.
Overall, i can confidently say it's in my top 5, if not maybe one day i'll be confident to say it's my number one...but as it stands in my eyes, a die hard fan of both the books and films. This is the Bond I want and wish for and I'm glad I got.
Believe the hype.
