Skyfall was excellent. One of the best Bond films ever, certainly the best of the Daniel Craig era. It manages to simultaneously make Bond more human and relatable than ever before and transition from the grounded take of the post-reboot films to something more like classic Bond. Craig is fantastic, as is Judi Dench.

And I've long been a fan of a classic Bond villain, and Raoul Silva could very well join that list. A twisted possible future vision of how Bond might end up, brilliantly brought to life by Javier Bardem. In terms of screentime, Bardem is hardly in the film, but you wouldn't think it, as he dominates the whole narrative. Totally different from Anton Chigurh, but almost as memorable a villain.

How is Wishaw as Q? All you really get from the ads is that he's basically a condescending little nerd. So by all rights every Hypester should love him.

Superb movie 9/10 ...... seems movie is heavily inspird frm TDK ...the structural format is same.... but movie suffers frm a gud action set piece btwn 2nd nd 3rd act.....

I had the major plot climactic event spoiled for me back when this was in production so the best I could hope for was not finding out the plot layout which fortunately I've done.

Yeah, I know what that is. I guess you could say I know a little about a lot going in. It's not ideal, but its james bond so I'm just happy to be watching it.

I liked the SF gunbarrel much more than the QoS one. All those commenta about Craig looking stiff in the former? That's pretty much my complaint about him in QoS. The best gunbarrel ever is still CR, though, imo.

the film is out, the gun barrel scene is what it is and how it is in the movie... we KNOW it sucks, let's just bloody move on already about it...

yes, I agree about the gun barrel scene and what it is to a Bond movie, but let's not make it's our life's work of complaining on it ad nauseum...

since it was just released in the UK on Friday, more in-depth reviews on the film from people besides Tequila and mcgreal who have just seen it would be nice...

But it doesnt. I think when more people have actually seen the movie the complaints will stop because they will see both the opening shot of the movie and the gunbarrel fits perfectly where they are now

This makes no sense, the movie suffers from a good action set piece between the 2nd and 3rd act??

I finally saw it today, it's a very good Bond film and Craig is once again superb. I'm not sure where I'd rank it but it's certainly top 10, top 5 at a squeeze due to Craig.

I thought the pre-credits sequence was one of the best ever, a fantastically shot big scale sequence of the type Bond specializes in, truth is the movie shoots it's lot right there though as far as action goes, with none of the sequences that follow coming close.

I enjoyed the look at a broken down Bond getting back in the game and how he was affected by the call M makes, the entire sequence in Shanghai was one of the most beautiful ever shot in a Bond movie and the fight between Bond and Patrice, illuminated by brief muzzle flashes, was class. The Macau section of the movie felt like classic Bond and then we get to meet Silva....

I thought Bardem was great, he brought a flair back to Bond villains not seen in quite some time, that big fake smile creepy as hell as he tries to get in Bonds head, the shootout sequence here is also really well shot and edited, [BLACKOUT]but what a waste of Severine.[/BLACKOUT]

To follow on from above the Bond girls don't fare so well, Naomie Harris has great banter with Bond but is removed too abruptly, and Berenice Marlohe is totally underused after a great first meeting between Bond and Severine.
In truth M is the Bond girl in Skyfall, or is that Bond granny?

The last 3rd of the film is less appealing than the first two 3rds. Silva's plan is pretty much a direct rip off of [BLACKOUT]The Joker's in TDK, even mixing in Silva in the police uniform like the scene where Joker attempts to kill the mayor[/BLACKOUT], and the whole sequence feels too BBC for me and features a ludicrously ill conceived train plunge.

The last part of the film is great in concept but just didn't feel very Bond to me. I was hoping for a more in depth dialogue scene between Bond and M here, and the action in this sequence is ok but it's dark and lacks spectacle.

For those hankering after the old days there are more Moore-esque one liners in here than the previous two Craig films, and going forward we now have [BLACKOUT]a male M, Moneypenny[/BLACKOUT] and Q all back in place.

All in all a very good Bond movie as I say, but the best ever? not for me, however I do think Craig is the best Bond, his screen presence, dry charm and physicality make him the total package.

I was just seeing so much negativity about the gun barrel sequence, that I was just getting tired hearing about it, so I was just saying sarcastically, "ok, we know it sucks"... hence my "now let's move on" remark...

I saw this last week and i really enjoyed it. To me it felt more of a Bond movie than Craigs first two pictures. Which makes sense really considering CR was Bond Begins and QOS was the follow on to that story.

The opening action scene was awesome and the introduction to certain characters was a nice touch.

Visually it was quite beautiful too, in particular the scenes in shanghai.

I'm looking forward to more Bond movies with Craig as the lead.

8/10 for me!

Seen it for the 2nd Time now.. loved it even more.
I especially liked the way they brought back the humor and old fashiond bond behavior like:

- bond upsidedown looking back at the komodo dragon and pointing at it, then later using one as a step :P
- re-adjusting his cuffs and suit after he jumps into the train.
- moneypenny banter
-everthing with kincade, especially him calling M "Emma" (at least thats the german dubbing translation, dont know if thats the same, because in the Q scene some stuff differs)

some stuff I still wonder about was craigs running. In one or two cases it looked weird.. was that intentionally funny (especially on the ice?)

I also couldnt make out the michael g. wilson cameo.. has someone here spotted him ?

I haven't seen the movie, BUT...would it have been so difficult to change the opening shot to not make the gun barrel sequence feel redundant?

So a question for those who have seen the film - given the very strong critical and popular (eg. poll results in this thread) reaction to Skyfall, what does everyone think of Skyfall's awards chances? Arguably, this year's assumed token mainstream nomination for Best Picture, The Dark Knight Rises, blew its chance for a nomination. The film's reception was far more mixed than that of The Dark Knight and reports from Academy screenings indicate that the film failed to impress Academy voters. Does anyone feel like Skyfall can swoop in and steal TDKR's assumed nomination? Most of the fan criticism I have seen of the film has revolved around the idea that Skyfall is a great film, but arguably not a great Bond film. To me, if that is what the major criticism is, that indicates that Skyfall might just catch the Academy's attention.
