...or am I reading something that's not there?...

I assumed that

the line Bond said when he mentioned it wasn't his "first time" in the chair was a callback to Casino Royale, where he was also tortured.

And the whole backstory with Bond and his parents was from the novels, I believe. Not sure if they're going with his parents being killed in a mountain climbing incident in this movie, though.

ahh, THAT could be it with that remark by Silva... I was thinking what I did in reference to [blackout] Silva making advances on James...[/blackout]

and it sounds as if whatever happened to James' parents happened while they were in the home, hence James hiding where Kinkaid said he did...

Just saw Skyfall. I loved every second of it. The homages to the old films put a huge smile on my face and as it ended I was terribly excited about what comes next for Bond. I'm going to see it again tomorrow!!

but it broke my heart when [blackout] the Aston Martin was destroyed[/blackout]

i thought this movie was kind of a mess....

it starts out sort of well enough. I say sort of, because we have a villain who is some master hacker and stole a list of secret agents' true identities....so, glad we're stuck back in the 90's. And also we're supposed to think Silva is menacingly weird because he's always chuckling at things. okay.

But it really begins to fall apart when Silva wants to get caught for no good reason with an impossibly planned escape.

And then MI6 is being convened before a board of their peers to question the departments necessities and operations. When, anyone who is in a position to question the necessity of MI6 and how they do their business, would be well aware of the departments proceedings and would know exactly why MI6 needs to do business the way they do. It was all B.S. dramatics.

But then worst of all, we end up at james' childhood house to play a game of Home Alone. And there's silva, whos greatest assets are his patience, computer skills, and his meticulous planning....suddenly dumb enough to stumble into a situation where he shows no patience, has no computers to help him, and hasnt planned for any of this. this brilliant villain is suddenly stupid enough to go for this? i dont buy it.

and does anyone notice that silva won? he got everything he wanted. he wanted to embarrass MI6, kill M, and apparently he also has a sudden desire to die at the end too (which came out of nowhere). all of these things came true for him.

I think a lot of that came off as them thinking "hey, let's make this as much like TDK as possible!"

it didnt work for me in TDK. it sure as hell didnt work for me here.

ok, some questions now that I've seen the film about some subtle things that were mentioned about James and his youth...

where in the case of M, on two instances, Silva referred to M as "mother"... was he being facetious or was he being truthful?...

the first instance he called her "mother" was when he removed his false teeth to show her the cyanide scars in his mouth and the second was when he told James it was time to say goodbye to "mother" at the chapel...

earlier in the movie, Silva told M to tell everyone who he really was... minutes later, M told James that he was Giovanni Rodriguez... is there more to it than just his true name?... IS M Silva's mother somehow?...

when Silva approached the chapel in his showdown with M, he remarked that "of course, it HAS to be here"... what was THAT remark allabout?

and then a moment later, he sees the graves of Bond's parents and for some reason, he gives a little chuckle like he's enjoying a private joke... strange...

when he saw that M was wounded, he showed honest and genuine concern for her...

and why would Silva put the gun freely in M's hand and put his head next to hers and tell her to use the same bullet to kill the both of them?...

I'm not sure why Silva kept calling her mother, but I assumed it would be like a mother-son relationship they had in the past, akin to the Mother/Son relationship Bond and M had. I assumed he said "It had to be here" meant that he didn't wanna kill someone in the church, so he decided to have her shoot them both to hell. The laughter at the Bond's grave was probably the thought of destroying 007's childhood home bringing him joy.

Motown Marvel,

I liked Skyfall, but I got to tell you, you made some very good points. It was some stuff I hadn't considered.

That's an awesomely rational response that I didn't expect to find on the internet

The movie had good moments, but more bad moments than I'd prefer. So it was a mixed bag of meh for me.

Glad ya had a good time with it though.

I hadn't thought of that, but now that you mention it,
that's the first time that Bond has failed at his mission. Did he manage to prevent any of the villain's plot?

I wasn't a big fan of the finale either, and you've pinpointed some of the things which I couldn't quite put my finger on, but had a nagging feeling about.

My video review!

Thought it was great but my one friend didn't like it much, though he isn't a Bond fan. My other friend who is a fanatic felt weird about it, but he had a lack of sleep during the day bouncing into a midnight premiere. Whatever though, it was awesome!

If anyone has done the math: Is the pre-title sequence in this longer than the one in The World Is Not Enough?

Just got back from watching it and thought it was great. Not too heavy on dialogue (not necessarily a bad thing in this case) but thick on ambiance and beautiful cinematography.

I thought that Craig delivered a really good performance as the loyal dog who came to question his master only to reinvigorate himself when going back in action.[BLACKOUT] Looks like Bond also ended up crying for another lady this time around. M's death in the church was awesomely staged but very sad. It reminded me from a particular scene from the series Trigun.[/BLACKOUT] Bardem was one creepy and sadistic villain but a little bit underused up until the latter half of the film (a very small complaint if at all).

Berenice Marlohe is outrageously gorgeous. I wanted more of her but [BLACKOUT]knew the inevitability of her character as she is a "bond" girl after all. Their sell life ain't too good if you catch my drift. :([/BLACKOUT]

Definitely better than Quantum of Solace but still doesn't quite reach the levels of Casino Royale. With that said it's still up there for me in terms of Bond films. I need to let it sink in a bit as I think my opinion may go even higher in time (I already think highly of it so that's a good thing ;)).

Yes they did:

Silva can no longer release any more MI6 names and they contain the leaks now.

I agree with you entirely. It starts out great, but about half way through they just throw away the plot, let Bardem do a Heath Ledger Joker impression and hope for the best.

I dug it alot, had a few problems and the pacing felt off in some spots but overall enjoyed it quite a bit. Couldve had a better showdown at the end for sure.

The Cinematography in this flick was amazing. Really dug all the lighting used in Shanghai.

I REALLY don't get the Heath Ledger comparison. Heath was NOT the first to play a villian as weird and creepy. Yes, both characters are that, but in entirely different ways.

And nearly every villian in movies like these have crazy plans. It's a prerequisite.

Its just how Silva[BLACKOUT] let himself get caught so he could break out and cause havoc. Always one step ahead of everyone. I mean him dressed as a cop brought some memories back of Ledger dressed as one.[/BLACKOUT] I'm sure there are other things but plot wise those things stuck out.

So did the Joker.

If people are going to compare the roles, then I prefer Javier's performance.

Heath gave a good performance, just not my favorite interpretation of the Joker. I wish it had a bit more of Javier's whimsy. Opinions will differ.

With Bardem, you could just tell they were trying SO hard to create a creepy, Joker, Hannibal Lecter type character.

With Ledger, it just flowed naturally from him. Honestly, for most as TDK, it legitimately felt like they were filming a real life psychopath as opposed to simply an actor playing a role.

I think you're muddling the topics in your head, though.

Preference of character interpretations is totally different from evaluating an actor's performance - and a screenwriter's dialogue/character work.

I don't know that we're going to get anywhere comparing Ledger's Joker and Bardem's Silva this much.
