James Cameron's "Avatar" Thread v.4

no way. Caemron had 100% control on this. it was hes decision.

If they included that "earth opening" (which I havent seen), it had nothing to do with the actual movie?
It is to show why the earthlings are so desperate for Pandora's unobtanium. It humanizes (:awesome:) the humans, thus making them something more than evil cardboard cutouts.

Then there should be an ending Earth scene too to show the humans are still bitter and sad

Not at all. The state of the Earth is still the same by that point.

I'm sure Fox ****ed that up.
Fox telling Cameron what to do? Are you kidding :awesome:

No, Cameron cut the scene himself in order to brisk the pace. I'm sure Cameron had to make a lot of tough creative decisions when it came to cut the final movie due to the unknown 3D threshold and the limited IMAX running time (which is 170 minutes, but actually closer to 165 - 166 minutes since those 170 min include trailer and Imax intro, etc)

i just saw the extended edition.dont ask me how because you know the answer.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. THE EART OPENING WORKS . IT WORKS. IT DOESNT SLOW DOWN THE MOVIE. its only 5 minutes. only 5 minutes longer.

you will not belive how Cameron goes from Earth to the spaceship. its IMO briliant.
they show a close up shot from Jake's brother when he burns. its the same angle when Jake wakes up on the spaceship. so they transition from hes brother burning to Jake waking up.

the Earth opening works. city has the same colors like Pandora. purple, blue and red. its like a futuristic city version of Pandora. the contrast to Pandora is so obvious and so good.

Cameron

awesome news, I cant wait to get my copy

and yeah its the Editor and Cameron who cant edit a movie, not Fox

Ya i saw the extended last night as well. LOVED IT. Everything just fit together perfectly and makes me wonder why it wasn't released in this way.

Ohh wait(in my buffalo bill voice), there was ONE THING that didn't fit at all for me.

The rock music playing in the bar. Unless it's timeless music, music makes movies age bad. Kind of like all the cheesy 80's films with 80's music. I don't know. It's just hard to believe the same kind of music on the radio today would be in that year. Music always changes. If anything, they should have gone for a Daft Punk sound without lyrics, or just used a frank Sinatra type song imo..

Edit: Okay, just watched that scene again to make sure since i saw it like at 3am last night. I'm not feeling the music and i'm not feeling how everyone is dressed like today. The whole scene screams 2000's bar. If you notice in the first shot of earth, theres a guy in a Jedi cloak. Theres guy's wearing leather. A lot of cut of sleeves, lots of brown, and overall a lot of poor looking futuristic styles. In the bar, not one person stands out. They all look like people that were just grabbed at the last minute and put in that scene to fill the bar in what they were already wearing.

i think in the future there are different bars like today. and Jake was in a ''biker'' ''rock'' bar IMO.

Cameron

Sounds like you liked it, what's with the face palm?

It could be a multiple of things, either it was some kind of retro bar or since history usually repeats itself it could also mean fashion and music repeats as well.

a face palm because it was said that the reason the earth opening was cut out was because it was more then 10 minutes long. it is 5 minutes. it wouldnt make the movie to long and the pacing is fantastic. its not slow.

i watched avatar 3 times in the theater and the earth opening deserved to be in the theatrical cut. :yay:

The funny thing is that Fox wanted even more Earth scenes in the final film. They wouldn't have wanted the only one cut out to begin with.

I saw the Earth prologue too and I thought it was very cool. Although brief, I loved the look of the future.

Cameron's official reasoning for cutting it was because he felt the movie started twice. Truthfully, I don't think Cameron ever wanted to show Earth in the final film.

At least we get to see it though and in an extended Special Edition no less. That's what I like about Cameron, he stands by his theatrical cuts and those are the "director's cut" but he also put's out extended Special Editions as fan service.

I got ya now. That really doesn't make sense then, if it was only 5 minutes. I remember how many fans were wanting that kind of footage before the film was even released theatrically. I can't wait to get this in a week.

Its on purpose. Its designed to look like a "retro" classic bar.

Well... every big sci-fi epic needs to have bar scene...

Too bad Jake doesnt cut off the arm of the guy he was beating up

So are all of the Deleted Scenes on the Blu-Ray in the Extended Cuts ? Or are there more not used in the Special Features section ? & how long is each cut supposed to be anyway

to shot that transition from Earth to the spaceship is IMO groudbreaking. it fits so much with the story and jake Sully

IMO one of the best action scenes
I love that shot as well, especially as you really get a sense of how damn HEAVY the Leonopteryx is.

I HATE it when directors use CG and just throw it out without any sense of weight or gravity. Thankfully Cameron isn't one of those people.
