James Cameron's "Avatar" Thread v.4

They could've easily trimmed it. We didnt need the scene with Grace in the trailer, we didnt need all that junk....just have her come in, do her think, and then she dies the same way. But that **** lasted too long.

Cant wait for this release, i can't belive piranah thinks it can even come close to avatar. Lol it's really trying to top the 3d in avatar lol.

i agree...that scene would've added some much needed context into Jake's story. we don't really understand the gravity of his journey because we only get a condensed version of the circumstances that lead him to want to goto Pandora in the first place.

however, incorporating the Earth scenes into the movie would've just been business suicide. LotR was able to get away with 3 hour run times because people knew those movies were going to be long and it became part of the brand. on the other hand, the average movie goer never even heard of Avatar and if you told them that the movie would be approaching 3 hours you run the risk of turning them off to sitting in the theater. those scenes will be awesome to watch on the special edition blu-ray though.......whenever the hell that's coming out.
The earth prologue was only 5 minutes long.

I think theres a good chance it will be in the 16-17 minute dvd/blu-ray extended edition

Well thats cuz your a hater and talk trash about avatar any chance you get.

Yes. I hate Avatar. I hate that movie so much. I hated it everytime I forked down 14 bucks to see it in the theaters, which I saw 4 times out of pure hate.

I hate Avatar so much that I rented the Blu Ray and awed at the amazingness of it.

I hate Avatar so much that I give it a score of 8/10. 6 for the story.

So yes. You are correct. I am a hater. And I hate Avatar so much that i'm going to by the new special edition Blu Ray with all the BHTS stuff because I hate it so much.

Dude that doesn't mean anything, you constanly bash the movie and signal out all it's flaws every freaking time. I dont care if you rented it or how many time's you saw it. you still bash it all the time and argue with people everytime they say somthing good about the movie.

I hope it beats it. Looks like the more fun movie.
I saw the trailer in 3D, it was horrid.

I dont bash it. I just think the flaws are way more in your face then anything else.

And plus, its hard to say good things about it whilst not looking like a rabid scary fanboy.

I have to be either ultra reserved, or ultra critical. I even said something nice about the movie a few posts back.

Then why on earth would you think piranah would be better, come on seriously thats not even funny. Im sure some people think so but that's a scifi channel movie at best.

That's like a movie where you got nothing to do on saturday so you sit back with the lady and watch and have a good laugh.

The flaws are about as in your face as any other movie discussed on this forum. Some people simply feel compelled to magnify them tenfold due to the movies success.

I think it shows an insecurity on the person if they can't help but constantly put down something, and in the end come out and say "I do like it!" Its a symptom of the popularity backlash as far as Im concerned.

Theres a time and place to discuss shortcomings in a movie you like. But If you honestly like a movie, I don't understand why you'd spend most of the time talking about it by constantly selling it short/bashing it, rather than engaging in constructive discussion. It seems irrational to me.

Celtic doesn't wanna seem like a fanboy to people.

he's on superherohype.com, that battle was lost 5,931 posts ago.

the problem is that journalist's dont know the difference between CGI and 3D.

they mixed up the 30% that was filmed live action footage. they think that 30% was not in 3D.

Those aren't simple quotes b. Read the whole article. Those are the exact words spoken by Joe Johnston.

actually...75% of all statistics are made up on the spot ;)

respect to Johnson because he's made a couple of solid movies, but i'm not sure he knew what he was talking about when he made that comment about 30 to 35% of the footage being converted. we know FOR SURE that all of the CG would be rendered in 3D and it would be asinine for Cameron to have developed the 3D camera system just so he could shoot a portion of the movie in 2D. it really sounds like he made up figures to back up his argument. i have no doubt that conversion techniques are getting better...but it's still not ideal. he shouldn't be detracting the achievements of other films in order to promote his own. bad form, Joe, bad form!

Just after made my post , i decided to google if this really was true.
All i could find was this :

Did Avatar Feature 2D to 3D Conversion Scenes?

James Cameron openly criticizes the popular 2D to 3D movie conversions Hollywood studios are utilizing. The director insists that for best results, 3D movies should be shot using 3D technology, not filmed in 2D then turned into 3D through a conversion process.
Interestingly, during a recent interview with the producer of Transformers 3, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, he revealed that parts of Avatar were created using the conversion process.

When the producer was questioned about the possibility of Transformers 3 being shot in 3D, he replied with, "We're literally in the middle of that. I think the answer is that as James Cameron, who had plenty and plenty of time to [make 'Avatar'], even he converted some of it. So I think the answer is that you're going to do some kind of combination if you end up doing it."

James Cameron is yet to confirm this statement, but previously the Avatar director had claimed that the entire movie was shot using 3D cameras. Despite his condemning of 2D to 3D conversions, he will soon be resurfacing his 1997 hit movie ‘Titanic’ in stereoscopic 3D through the conversion process.

btw This is the article where Lorenzo Di Boniventura says that some parts of Avatar were converted.

And Johnston & Boniventura are industry insiders. But at the same time i couldn't find anything on Avatar's conversion process. Even in Cinefex.

maybe Johnston is lying to justify 3D conversations. he is lying that Avatar had fake 3d to make hes 3D look better.

lets make it clear as possible. the live action was full Vince Pace 3D.

James Cameron has recently been talking up next week's 'Special Edition' release of "Avatar" in select theatres and revealed to Entertainment Weekly that his recent trip to South America changed some of the story he has planned for the sequel.
Cameron tells the mag he held a special screening of the film for the Amazonian tribal community the Achuar. After the screening, the BBC interviewed a tribal elder who said “In this movie, they solved their problems by fighting. We are not afraid to fight, but we have decided to try to solve our problems through dialogue. So this movie needs a better message." Cameron said "I felt like I’d been punk’d. But it made me think."

i hope that noone thinks now that Cameron had a plan to have a fight in the sequel and that he will change it to a 20 minute dialoge scene between the villain and na'vi.

and Cameron was not punkd. the humans wanted to kill the tree. first they destroyed their big tree where tehy lived. then they again went after the na'vi .

He's been involved in a lot of different things post avatar, relating to displacement of natives. Like you said, it would be foolish to expect Cameron not to deliver stellar action sequences in the sequel, but I think his post avatar experiences will definitely shape in some way the sequels.

Cameron has had sequels planned since day 1, but its not like he has scripts already. He has a broad overarching story for a trilogy, and hes been constantly taking notes on what will shape Avatar 2, since even before the first movie was released. So its not a big deal for things to change, its the process for nailing down the sequel.

Cameron isn't going to rush into a sequel in order to strike while the iron is hot like Michael Bay (3 transformer movies in 6 years...). Cameron wont have an Avatar 2 ready until 2013 at the earliest. Hell, even 2014 could be likely if he does another movie in between.

I have to ask, does Avatar really need 4 threads? It was not that good imo. Good, but not amazing.

You're getting into a near impossible argument to win I think. I would let it go. What I said has nothing to do with the quality of Avatar by the way.

hardly. Just because I think the movie doesnt deserve 1000 threads, doesnt mean I dont want to post in them...lol.

And why do I bring up the negatives of Avatar? Because everyone else discusses the positives. They were already discussed. Same with every other movie. When everyone else has said what you agree to be the best stuff, there is little to talk about.

Like I said, if they would've added the Earth scene into the movie, that would've made the movie better then it is.
