glad they are including the theatrical cut on the new edition as I sold the 'bare bones' version but prefer the theatrical cut to the special edition.

I'll probably watch the "Extended Cut" first.... dont care about the middle version

Should've posted this earlier.

I saw the Avatar extended edition a month or so ago. Honesty while it was fun to watch the movie again , i thought th majority of the extra scenes didn't really help the movie in terms of storytelling. It's just more of the same. The big hunting scene . Great to look at but not really helping to progress the movie forward. The only 3 scenes that i thought helped the movie more were the scene where Jake sees the abandoned school and the bullet holes. It also explains a bit more clearly how the Na'Vi can speak english.
The 2nd one scene was the aftermath of the Na'vi attacking the miners. There is a scene where the soldiers are surveilling the burning wreackage and it was quite effective for me because it also give the soldiers more of a reason to attack them.
And the last scene was the death of Tsu'Tey.

I do think that if they'd skipped to release this movie IMAX and just stick to the 3d theaters , they'd be able to include the earth scenes. That i still think is a wasted oppurtunity.

Are the extra scenes all at the beginning, or spread out throught the film?

Sometimes the DVD or Blu-ray has only that amount of space... it varies from movie to movie and studio to studio regarding how they transfer their movie to discs.

In the case of the first Avatar release... if James Cameron wants to sacrifice special features for the sake of a better looking movie, then I say ok fine.

Well, thats a bit more like it, but I was still expecting more, especially from a Cameron DC which is usually at least 25 mins longer, but, any news on a release date for this baby, amazon.co.uk doesnt have one yet.
Um no.

T2 is 15 minutes longer, and Aliens is 17 minutes longer. Only the Abyss is more than 20 minutes longer, and thats because the movie wasn't properly finished the first time.

Are you sure T2 was only 15 mins longer? Anyway, all I know is that, and he has said this himself, he doesnt delete 'scenes' as such but actually whole plot points! Doesnt seem the case here.

i think everything that was in the script will be on the BR.

There are several deleted subplots from Avatar, like Neytiri's dead sister, Jake's drug trip initiation, the Scientists and other Avatars taking over the human compound, and the entire Earth opening.

But the scenes added to the special edition, rather than entire subplots are mostly new scenes and extensions that add more to the context of the movie. Most of them are scenes that should have never been cut imo. In the special edition, my favorite difference is that the Na'vi are seen as less passive. The new hunting scene really shows off their skills as warriors and hunters, and their massacre of the humans after the USB Trees are bulldozed showcase them as much more proactive, unlike the theatrical cut. They get their hands dirty and don't just stand around waiting, which is what it seems like they do in the theatrical edition. There are also a lot of great extended and new scenes throughout the movie that enhance the Jake and Neytiri relationship imo. Plus, theres a nice scene that takes place in Grace's old school. Although originally, it was the beginning of the subplot involving the story of Neytiri's sister, I find it works much better by itself as it establishes a vaguer sense of history, you know, not everything is connected to everything, and the scene also provides more context for why the Na'vi have turned so distrustful of the humans.

As far as adding subplots, the original Earth opening has been finished and will be added to the new Extended edition (basically the special edition + 7 additional minmutes, 16 total), so that will add another layer to the beginning of the movie.

Considering that there are 68 minutes of deleted scenes as well, you will probably see the rest of the subplots there.

So the same set will be available on both DVD and Blu-ray? Wont the DVD have more discs or something like they usually do?

Fox probably asked them to take the article down since they didn't want the contents to be completely spoiled before they make their announcement

well heres the official announcement by 20th Century Fox
