At least James Cameron can still be considered a real "filmmaker". George Lucas...well, not so much. If you look on the Making-Of Videos and the B-Roll of the Star Wars prequels...the way Lucas is doing his directional job is just beyond awful. Its like he is always bored with it, it always feels like he wants to do something else in that moment. He is never enthusiastic or something, he always sits in a chair or sits behind the camera (yes, thats right, this man SITS behind the camera) and having a Coffee to go in one hand. Personally I think George Lucas doesent even like directing. He was always a bussinessman first. A smart Businessman, I ll give him that. Just not a good director.
However, James Cameron doesent have to prove a thing anymore. He proved that he is a visionary and crafted and talented filmmaker back in the 80s and 90s. George Lucas has never done anything except for Star Wars. Cameron founded his legacy with at least 4 undenieable masterpieces, all of them vastly different from each other. If he now only goes for the big moneyz, well, I really cant get angry at him for that. He brought us great films, and he still is a pioneer in developing filmmaking techniques.
He still is one of the good ones, and Avatar was a spectacel appealing to the wide masses. It was a movie which wasent just a movie, it was a social event. It was a movie which millions of people over the world were willing to pay 12 Dollars to see it. Every filmmaker dreams of this. Mission accomplished Mr. Cameron.
I would rather want him to take his time, develop the technique even further, and then eventually writing a script for an Avatar sequel with an deeper and more original story, expanding the scope even more, and then make the movie happen with the absolute best and most awesome technique and CGI possible. A technique that will most likely be invented by Cameron himself. Yes, I am not angry at him. He deserves his money. He deserves his time off. At least he deserves it both more than George Lucas.
