Horror James Wan's "The Conjuring"

First off let me just say that I'm a huge Ed and Lorraine Warren fan. I live in CT and visited Lorraine's house when she has talks, I've seen the famous basement with the Annabelle doll, I've been to almost all of her speeches when they come around every Halloween....

From what I'm reading most of the things in the Conjuring 2 are false..

Apparently the Warrens were one of several investigators to visit the house, and they were only there for a few hours and really didnt do anything. Also many of the creepy things didnt really happen and this haunting was considered many to be a hoax... the girl levitating off her bed? she jumped and they have pictures to prove it... its even said that Ed said he could make money off this case if they wanted to

I'm all for having another movie featuring the Warrens, but I wish they did another case. Maybe the Lindley house or something. This one is billed as one of their most famous cases, but no ones ever heard of it and it really wasnt their case

Im all for having Hollywood take liberties to make movies, and dont expect it to be a documentary, but I hate when they have a piece of a story and fabricate tons of stuff around it that isnt true... Like the Annabelle movie...if they did the true story about the doll it would have been awesome, but making up a backstory was just dumb
The purpose of this project is to produce an entering horror movie for people to enjoy, it is NOT a docudrama.

I understand that completely, but dont bill the movie on true events if these true events didnt even happen. they advertise it as "The next true story out of the Warren's case files"

First off it is not true...second of all, it wasnt even their case. They showed up uninvited, stayed for less than a day, tried to make money off the people, didnt help at all, and the whole thing was widely thought of as a hoax (the girls even admitted they were faking at times, but they retracted their statement to reporters)....Theres TONS of truer ghost stories that they could have made...especially from the Warrens

They advertise it as a true story...and when someone says its not true it just goes down to being entertainment....

So what is it? An entertainment movie, based on true people, focused on events that may or may not have occured, which are widely believed not to be true, that could have happened once, at one time...possibly?

Umm, you may want to see how many liberties things that use the "based on a true story" normally take. This is hardly the only one.

:funny: "This film is based on a true story..." is absolutely meaningless.
Notice that it says "based on". The movie can be 99.999% BS and made up and still say, "This is based on a true story..."

Most "true" films drastically change or embellish the stories they are adapting. Whether it be a horror film, drama, crime film etc. entertainment has always taken precedent over absolute accuracy.

The "This is a true story..." statement has always been used more as a marketing tactic that a declaration of truth and accuracy.

I mean we're dealing with ghosts here... not exactly true to begin with.

I wouldnt say that. There is plenty of BS ghost stories out there, no doubt, but people have genuinely experienced paranormal events. I myself have. I was dragged out of my bed and tossed across my room when I was younger. My mom saw it happen. And Ive seen things in my house that has sent my dogs into a frenzy.

I dont know if all this stuff is ghosts, spirits, emotional memories imprinted on locations, some sort of energy that we dont yet understand, or something else entirely, but I do believe that humans do actually experience "paranormal" events. Maybe one day we will figure out what really causes some of this stuff. It isnt all mental disorders and delusions and BS.

I do have to admit that I've dealt with ghosts before, and I still can't explain it. It's not as in your face as this, but it did happen. and I'm a rationale person.

Just saw this. The movie doesn't reinvent the genre but it doesn't need to or want to because it delivers exactly what people want to see. There were some incredibly imaginative scenes that were so well put together that I'll definitely remember them, despite probably wanting to forget lol. The story was well crafted.

I mean, if you really want to get down to it, there's a lot of people that believe the Warren's themselves were hoaxes. They were implicated as the ones who came up with idea to create Amytiville and make it what it was.

And the Conjuring itself was hugely exaggerated as well, so I think it's just kind of expected at this point.

Saw it. It was just as good, if not better than, the first one. 9/10

Haven't watched a horror movie in theaters in forever, but I'm tempted here.

I thought this was fantastic and is one of the best horror sequels ever made.

Does it beat Wan's Insidious Chapter 2? :p

This film is good but not great like the original. The original was more of a bare bones horror film while the sequel is clearly more Hollywood. Like, very Hollywood.

Does this mean it's more like his Insidious films?

Personally loved his Insidious films over the first Conjuring, love his nightmarish dreamscape type visuals.

The case being a hoax is actually brought up in the movie.

Interesting. Though as I said above, there's a decent amount of evidence to suggest the Warrens themselves are hoaxes in real life, and that they were part of the group that fabricated Amytiville, so criticising a film for not being based off of a "true" case is somewhat suspect.

Without knowing anything about the Enfield poltergeist story before I saw the movie last night, it was pretty clear whatever did happen wasn’t anything like what goes down in the movie, particularly in the final act. It was a little too Hollywood-action packed to believe any of that actually happened.

Although it’s true that those girls really did have all of those David Soul posters in their bedroom. :wow:

However, I enjoyed the movie a lot. It maybe runs a little long, but damn scary and with a decent story as well. I love horror movies that actually try, I wished they happened like this more often.

I don't watch a lot of horror movies. I haven't seen the first Conjuring or any of the Insidious movies. I did watch Annabelle but it wasn't scary because it was so basic. I am happy that horror movies don't rely on torture and gore like they used to. I thought this movie was so smartly made that even though it was a pretty formulaic demon haunting movie it still felt memorable and had genuine scares. Maybe I liked it so much because I don't have the other movies to compare it to. Wan certainly knows how to trick an audience.

The scene with the demon nun and the painting, and the conversation between Ed and Bill were standouts to me

I remember seeing this photo before the movie and noticed how they tried so hard to recreate that room with all those posters. [BLACKOUT]Also I thought it was funny that Ed pointed out the same thing that many people point out in real life about the photo that she appears to simply be jumping off her bed.[/BLACKOUT]

For anyone wanting to see room recreation, although it's very dark:
