Jeff Goldblum IS The Grandmaster

Do you think they'd be so on the nose as to have him do dialog that references chaos theory? He is the master of games. That could include probability, ect., no?

I could see them (and him) wanting to do a reference if it fit with his dialogue somewhere. Can't see it doing much harm and would be a fun catch that many people would get.

And it seems like Jeff Goldblum is gonna have a decent sized role.
Being the ruler of Sakaar and the gladiatorial arena. He's gonna interact with Thor, Valkyrie, Loki, Hulk... It doesn't look like a cameo or a small scene as The Collector had in GotG. I think he's gonna play a big part in the Sakaar side of things.

I found a few more tidbits from EW issue regarding TR.

The enigmatic leader of Skaar pits Thor and the Hulk against each other in a gladiator style-bout. Jokes Waititi, "Who should rule a place like Skaar? Jeff Goldblum. He's welcoming but also puts you on edge. I like to think he was the first one to crash (on Skaar). Everyone that turned up after that, he just sort of made them work for him."

Sorry for the triple post but more stuff has surfaced about him in the movie.

What was it like for you to enter that world yourself for the first time with Thor: Ragnarok?

I enjoyed it. I didn’t have scenes with Cate Blanchett, but she was in The Life Aquatic, of course, so we’d been in touch, and I’ve seen her since. I just adore her, so it was great to be in another movie with her, even just by association. The other Hemsworth brother, that now makes two for me, and he couldn’t have been sweeter or more down-to-earth, like the whole family. What I particularly loved is the director, Taika Waititi. He really got me involved in this because I’m a fan of his, from Flight of the Conchords and all his movies, not only Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Boy but especially What We Do In the Shadows. When we first talked, he said, “I want you to do your particular version of this character without being comic-y or grandiloquent. I think you should do something that’s in your creative family tree. And also improvise.” He was very interested in improvisation. We came to all those scenes and riffed enjoyably for the time we had. I don’t know what’s gonna come out in the mix because we gave him a whole bunch of different choices, I’ll tell you that. He’s great. Taika Waititi gets 10 Goldblums out of a possible 10 Goldblums.

10 Goldblums......that's a rating you can't beat.

Oh and this stuff pretty much throws aside the theory someone had of The Grandmaster having a bet with Hela. He doesn't have scenes with her so as i expected its probably going to be 2 very different paths the movie will take. One with Sakaar, Grandmaster, Valkyrie... and the other with Asgard, Hela, Skurge, Heimdall... probably running parallel to each other.

I'm kinda disappointed that the Grandmaster and Hela won't have any scenes together (c'mon, Jeff Goldblum and Cate Blanchett sharing the screen in those crazy costumes would have been gold) but I was kinda expecting it tbh. I don't think that negates the theory that they could potentially have a wager though, they don't have to share screen time for that to be a possibility. Like I said in a previous post, Hela could have sent Loki as her representative, which would explain, a) Why he's also on Sakaar, and b) Why he's being treated like a VIP. Just a theory.

10 Goldblums out of 10 Goldblums, huh? High praise indeed. :woot:

maybe he's there as fake Odin, but the audience only sees him as Loki in the trailer

"There's a tulip bulb that's not dissimilar..."

Gotta love JG.

Jeff Goldblum (Grandmaster)

“I’m the Grandmaster,” Goldblum said. The actor, who sports a bold blue lip in the movie, described his time on set as a “golden memory” but was hesitant to reveal too much about his big character debut. “If you followed the comic books [then you know that] he’s one of the elders in the universe. His brother is the Collector, immortal, has fought and beaten death, has superpowers galore, and his games are a playful, playful sort.”

ET set visit.

Meet The Grandmaster

Who is he? Goldblum was one of the first actors Waititi thought of to play The Grandmaster, a rather complicated character that Goldblum claims is not strictly a bad guy. Perhaps The Grandmaster is just misunderstood? "I don't know who understands what about me," the actor admits. "I haven't read the comic books through the decades, because it's been over decades that they've woven his story. He and his brother, Benicio Del Toro [who played The Collector in Guardians of the Galaxy], were around since shortly after the Big Bang. We're sort of immortal. We're the so-called Elders."

When ET spoke with Goldblum, it was only his second day on set, but he said the role was a departure from anything he had done before. The Grandmaster is a sort of dictator of Sakaar and arranges fights for the aforementioned Contest of Champions. "My character is a game player and a game maker and spectacle maker," Goldblum teases, revealing his real-life musical abilities are manifested in his Sakaar alter ego. "If you came a little later, maybe today or tomorrow, I have an instrument for me to play in the scene."

What's he wearing? On the page, The Grandmaster has a very distinct look, partially because his skin is blue. For Goldblum's incarnation, that look was toned down...but only slightly. Goldblum's Grandmaster wears golden robes over blue-and-red tunics, his hair styled into a slight faux hawk, with accents of blue eyeliner and a strip of metallic, blue paint running down his lip. Goldblum played no part in dreaming up the costume, but credits "Mayes C. Rubeo, the spectacularly talented costumiere, if I'm using that word correctly, and, Taika has his brilliant mitts on every detail."

One of those details is a pair of golden gladiator sandals, with Goldblum's toenails polished. "It's usually my feeling that adult men shouldn't present their feet in public," Goldblum disclaimed. "But if you got a nice lookin' foot, it's always better."

Will we see him again? Considering The Grandmaster's personal connection to The Collector -- and thus, to another Marvel franchise -- might we see Goldblum pop up in any other movies, such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? "I don't know. I have no insight," he predictably replies. "But there's a chance, I would say! There is a chance of anything in this mysterious world, don't you think so?"

Goldblum was every bit as awesome as expected. Absolutely classic Goldblum lol.

He was truly great. 10 out of 10 Goldblums.
Those subtle nuances of his cracked me up. :woot:

Didn't enjoy his character that much. Liked him the most when he [blackout]melted the other guy and was at least a little threatening[/blackout]...

Goldblum is going to own this role so much, it's almost like the perfect role for him. Can't wait to see The Grandmaster on screen.

You're in for a treat. I absolutely loved this character. His mood swings and his unpredictability made him almost scarier than Hela, lol. I hope they bring him back for more movies.
