Any chance that we could still get a Lionel Luthor who is older? Maybe Cranston?

I'd want Lex to be separated and focusing on himself. I don't think we have enough screen time to show the (likely) tumultuous relationship between Lionel and Lex.

maybe Lex is the one who changes the signs/branding from Luthorcorp to Lexcorp.

Why would any smart businessman do that though?

The company already has his name. Why risk the image and recognition of your brand for such a petty and childish concept?

It makes Lex look like a petulant child with daddy issues.

there's always the possibility that Lionel Luthor started the company and had his hand in those kinds of businesses.

Now that his son, Lex, is in charge, he wants to move the company towards a more tech/science direction.

That's the most sensical way to do it. How many Facebook Oil or Apple Construction ads do you see?

Also, he's got to be able to sway public opinion. I'm not 100% sold on the "Zuckerberg" role. As a matter of fact I'm beginning to think it will be much different. Most of us are naturally associating him to past performances. If he knocks this out of the park, it should be career defining.

The idea of Lex having a rich father sort of contradicts Lex's character.

One of the many reasons I despised Smallville.

Are people not allowed to take liberties and introduce something new to the mythos?

and why not??

it would show that Lex is an egomaniac with a god complex.

Lionel didn't embrace Lex's technological ideas and innovations and focused more on practical industries of the time and once Lex gained control of the company he threw off the chains of his father's legacy to embrace his own ideologies and thus LexCorp was born.

bingo!!

Not when it contradicts the characters that people have grown to love.

The DC characters are more than just mythos. They're cultural icons like Peter Pan or Sherlock Holmes now.

Giving Luthor a rich father is the same as changing Batman's background so that he is a self made billionaire and Thomas Wayne was just a regular doctor.

An edifice and Oedipus complex maybe. But I don't see how hating his father and erecting monuments to his name gives him a god complex.

but it's happened before, like in Smallville.

well that's semantics........you know what I meant.

Lex thinks he's "king" of Metropolis. he wants his name on everything. His name. Not his dad's.

and many emperors/kings thought they were "gods" too.

Anyone who thinks they're a god is an idiot though.

Lex isn't an idiot. He's a pragmatist.

It only contradicts because people are unable to view the re-imagination as if it were a separate entity (aka like an Elseworlds story). Instead, they always relate back to the "ideal" as if it's a universal concept.

Funny you mention Holmes. BBC's Holmes pretty much makes him a sociopathic genius, which is a huge departure from the usual characterization we've come to know of, yet I don't see many people complaining about taking such liberties. Just because they're cultural icons, doesn't mean you can't re-interpret them and provide something new.

Lionel Luthor was one of the best things about Smallville, although that may simply be because John Glover is awesome. I kind of liked the parallel of Clark who had parents who help make him into a hero, while Lex had a father who set him down the path of corruption and villainy. As for this movie, they could also do the whole "Lex had his parents murdered and got away with it" thing.

and the show Elementary is a totally different take on Holmes where Watson is female.
