BvS Jesse Eisenberg IS Lex Luthor - Part 10

Lex Luthor is one of the most two-faced and duplicitous characters in the DCU, there's every possibility this trailer showed us a single side of him. And obviously he still has his hair, there will be a marked transition in his character by the end of the movie.

The voice that says "Devils don't come from the hell beneath us" in the previous trailer had a very different intonation to his energetic and upbeat exchange with Clark and Bruce. It's very naive to think he's going to be weird, overeager Lex all the time, with everyone, regardless of what happens with his plans.

Seems way too Sheldon Cooper-esque for my liking. The whole facade thing is possible, still I'd rather he use the facade of a trustworthy, well-mannered gentleman than that of an annoyance most would instantly want nothing to do with.

Our short lived bromance is over :lmao:

I think when we see the film as a whole we'll see the full performance and it will all come together.

:funny: Well we tried.

Seriously though, I'm not dismissing him yet, pieces might fall perfectly in the film itself, I'm just saying that I didn't like him in this trailer, as opposed to previous one. For some reason.

no, that's being said because it's painfully obvious that eisenberg is a much better fit for the riddler role and they completely dropped the ball and cast him as lex instead.

plus " that is a three syllable word for any thought too big for little minds " is a pretty riddleresque line in itself.

Nope.

I don't know. He's goofier than I was expecting, but given that both of our heroes aren't exactly known for their sense of humor (either in the comics OR on film) I suppose they felt the need to be a little more jokey with their approach to Luthor. That approach can work; I've heard a lot of people say they loved TDK but found TDKR too bleak and honestly, the only truly "funny" character in TDK is the Joker, who is of course a mass-murdering psychopath.

I suppose if it was up to me, I'd prefer a more serious Lex but again, as many have said, this is public persona Lex. He seems a little less goofy and more creepy in the scenes where his true nature is revealed. I suppose people might find his interaction with Lois here campy but his comment to her sounds EXACTLY like something comic book Lex would say (albeit with a sneer and less animated, probably).

Then again, one of my favorite interpretations of Luthor was the Birthright one. And in that story, Lex was more animated and borderline psychotic than he's typically portrayed. He also has a much slighter frame than usual. My hope is that they are taking influence from that story here.

There's hope. This. We haven't seen this. This gives me hope.

See? Superman isn't the only thing giving people hope. Luthor's bald head does it too. :o

Seriously though, you're right. This could either be a miss as far as Eisenberg's performance is concerned or it could be one of the greatest cinematic switches in history. Maybe. :oldrazz:

To be fair Kevin Spacey and Hackman were both far goofier, with little menace or edge to them. In terms of film renditions Eisenberg fits in, and comparing him to comic source material seems futile since a lot of Lex's iconic representations were just done some time ago and this is a more modern interpretation.

Now I want a scene of Lois gently stroking Lex's bald head saying, "This means something. It's all some nerds online have."

All the Luthors have had serious and funny moments. I hate that people pretend like Lex had always just been a cheesy over the top character. It's just not the case.

People seem to fall into either very off the wall, odd and weird Lex or super-serious, politician, driven and methodical Lex categories. He's never been quite that polar in his representation in source material.

I don't really see anything in what we've seen of Eisenberg so far where I go "No version of Lex would ever do/say that", not that I'm definitively familiar with the character though. Is it faithful to a particular piece of source material? Probably not. But it does seem true to the overall spirit of the character, which is essentially a manipulative and egocentric xenophobe.

Lex came off (to me at least) as such a privileged d-bag. I love it. :woot:

Exactly. I blame the animated series and blandy Zane.

That's where I'm at too. I'd like one movie version of Lex that I actually enjoy, so I'm hoping for the best.

I'm not saying Lex is definitely spastic through the whole movie or not, but people saying "It's an act to to hide the real Lex that is true to the comics" just reminds me of the perma-white fanatics when TDK came out.

I'm tired of zany, over the top, scenery chewing from Lex on film. I've seen it and never enjoyed it in any Superman film. If it is a facade then that's quite clever. Because the Luthor I don't want to see is potentially hiding the Luthor I do want to see.

Honesty, Kevin Spacey in House of Cards is how I think Lex should be portrayed.

STAS seems to pretty much be everyone's blueprint of Lex.

In all likelihood he behaves like that in public because that seems less suspicious than actually looking like a brooding, scheming mastermind that wants to kill super-powered beings. The same way most of the on screen Luthor's have been pretty bizarre and quirky among the public or their henchman, but become more cold and calculating elsewhere.

I love his version of Lex. It's a new take and he looks creepy and seems like a mad scientist/billionaire who just doesn't care about anyone but himself and his agenda.

I loved Lex's introduction in the trailer. I feel like the more scene chewing Lex we saw was definitely a mask. If you compare his manner of speaking with pretty much everything else he says in the trailer, it sounds very different. And it feels like he's being over-the-top less to hide himself and more to gloat. More of a "You guys can't see what's right in front of you." sorta thing.

I think it's just his voice that makes it off putting for some, but I don't mind. If you imagine a deeper voice saying those lines in the exact same way, it might seem less jarring. Like if Cranston read the scene the same way, it might be easier on the ears.

But I like that's it's jarring. I love how it breaks up that moment of intensity. All that macho posturing, dismantled by this little guy with weird hair.

I don't think this is a case of Jesse's Lex not being valid or having a basis. It's just not the Lex some people want perhaps.

Luthor can be funny without being cartoonish. I'm blanking but in the DCAU he had a good amount of funny/humorous moments (not counting The Great Brain Robbert) without being a clown

That's a good way of putting it.

Lex was one of my fav things about the trailer. Jesse is killing it for me.

At the party, this comes across as a persona. He seems insecure about Bruce & Clark, probably because of their physical stature and acts as a playful, good, harmless type of guy (who probably can't stand Bruce Wayne).

Later on his tone changes. In his frankenstein moment, he is much different. He looks very dangerous. Like a brilliant crazed evil menace. I think his transformation will be interesting & fun to watch
