I think that if it's a wig, and it probably is, that it plays one of two roles:

For one lets remember that classically it does play a part in his hatred of Superman thst he feels that Superman is responsible foor this blow against his vanity. So maybe Lex was injured in the gravity beam attack and that cost him his hair? Now I'm not saying that should be his ONLY reason for hating Supes, but... it's one more iron to throw on that fire.

Second, I think his getting rid of the hair piece will be about him going full on super villain. "I've gone beyond mere vanity, so here I am world!" Which of course is just Lex lying to himself since all his reasoning about Superman is about Lex and his ego and nothing else despite him going on about "humanity and it's potential ect." Lex's hatred of Superman is in the end... All about LEX.

Yeah, Jesse was a shocker but he's a better actor than people give him credit for. And Supes and Lex should be around the same age, like Henry and Jesse. Cranston would have been another Lex who is old enough to be Superman's dad.
