I just got done watching Oldboy, and it's a terrible ****ing movie. It proves once again that no matter what BS happens in Southeast Asian movies people over here will fawn over them as if it's the greatest thing ever.
I've gotta disagree. I won't say your opinion on the film is wrong, because, well, that'd be stupid, but I disagree that it means everyone just inherently loves asian films. I loved Oldboy, however I admit certain aspects, mainly those involving hypnosis were a bit of a stretch, but otherwise I enjoyed it far more than the likes of Tarantino's films which I believe people worship simply because they are Tarantino films. On the asian subject though, I full well have seen that asian cinema can produce some terrible films. Far too many Ring/The Grudge type asian films that don't manage to build up a scare factor. Others aren't good, to me at least, simply because the jokes in their comedies may not click as well as they would with the original audience.
Hell, whene asian directors make their way over to American productions, the results aren't always great. Midnight Meat Train, while a decent adaption of the short story, was honestly a pretty boring and forgettable film, and that was done by Ryuhei Kitamura of "Versus" and "Godzilla Final Wars".

It's the best BS ever :D

I was looking at the userslist here and did I read right that Morg is banned? He's a mod. I've never known a mod to get banned. Very strange....

He did it himself as a custom title.

I was wondering that, thanks. I mean, he's too nice to get banned for reals. :p

Well I absolutely LOVE SE Asian action movies, but they're so damn overrated the way a lot of foreign movies get to Americans just because they're foreign. Battle Royale is a perfect example. It's hokey, stupidly plotted, and in the end has no real point or even good kills, yet people worship it and tore down Hunger Games as a knock off when Running Man came out before both. Oldboy was hailed as this super great movie, but it ended up being weirdly quirky with some horrible payoffs. Even before the big reveal I was feeling like it was going nowhere, and when we figure out why the guy planned things the way he did I just threw my hands up in disgust. The reveal was a major point about why I disliked the movie, but not the only reason I despised it.

It's funny you mentioned Tarantino too. I feel that he's very overrated because he has a really vocal fanbase that thinks he walks on water. Some of his movies are good no doubt, but people do tend to rate things better because his name is on it. A lot of cinema snobs really talk highly of his movies without even talking about the damn movie because they're in love with him. Oh well. Kill Bill was the ****, so that should be enough for any Tarantino fanboys to leave me be. *cough* Parker *cough*:o

i dont think i've ever seen a tarantino film

I think he's very inventive....he does good things with editing, musical presentation, dialogue, etc.....I just get real tired of hearing every curse there is and it's million variations in all of his movies. He;s shown he can write wonderful dialogue between characters, I just wish he would go that one extra step and show that he doesn't have to rely upon the F word to get his point across.

Fair points E-man. I still love Oldboy, but I never assumed everyone would love it, but I wasn't sure if you did like Asian cinema or not. I love it, but I tastes vary, because I'm also one of those who love Battle Royale, although I see its flaws. (And yet I still didn't enjoy Hunger Games, and have not actually fully seen Running Man). Also, agree, Kill Bill is the one (well 2) Tarantino movie I really do enjoy.

In terms of Asian films, I don't really hear people (outside of the internet) talk about yakuza movies, which is kind of sad.

My favorite is THE YAKUZA (1974) starring Robert Mitchum, Ken Takakura, Brian Keith, and Keiko Kishi. Great movie.

Ah, I'll have to check that one out. I liked Branded to Kill and plan to watch the original Graveyard of Honor again soon.

Takashi Miike's Black Society Trilogy films are pretty good yakuza films. Gozu, another Miike film, deals with Yakuza, but takes a...much stranger turn.

Damn straight.

What would you think if you saw someone inline skating somewhere?

Never saw BR
Most of these SE films are as you said; hokey

I've never watched Pulp Fiction...
It might be his best one. I sorta didn't like the way it jumped around at first, but like others have said here, it's the dialog that is so mesermizing. I found myself unable to change the channel when it came on. This isn't true of all of his films and I wouldn't consider myself to be a true fan, but I did really like Inglorious Bastards far more than I thought I would. :)

Pulp Fiction is my favourite Tarantino easily. Looking forward to Django Unchained.

Most people your age probably haven't. It did come out in '94 after all.

I still think it's his best movie though Kill Bill Volume 1 is my personal favorite of anything he's done, followed by Django.
