JMS' Squadron Supreme

So I read the first trade of SS, JMS's version, and loved it. I liked how it was basically the JLA but in a more realistic, and cynical world with heroes to match.

I was just wondering, are there any other trades I should pick up to do with the new SS? It seems there is a lot of back story I missed out on, and I'd love to catch up on it. And why is Nighthawk a gigantic *****e?

And can someone with more dc knowledge than me tell me the dc counterparts to the new squadron? I know superman and wonder woman are hyperion ad power princess, but thats about it.



And whats the plot behind the upcoming nighthawk vs hyperion mini if anyone knows?

Supreme Power is the series that lead to the Squadron Supreme title. its MAX and its much more awesome than this lame Pg-13 version we have now, and it actually had what we call progression.

Even though the first twelve or thirteen members of the Squadron were designed with JLA counterparts in mind, I don't think the later members had direct tie-ins.

Shape, for example, was a villain introduced in the Squadron maxi-series who later reformed (but it would be a stretch to say he's supposed to be Elongated Man), and the illusionist Moonglow was a member of the Redeemers who Nighthawk recruited to oppose the Squadron, and she too is without a direct DC counterpart. I think the same holds true with many of the other newer members.

Here are the original 13 members:

Nighthawk: Batman
Hyperion: Superman
Whizzer: Flash
Dr. Spectrum: Green Lantern

Evil counterparts of these top four originally fought the Avengers and then the Defenders, as part of the Squadron Sinister.

Golden Archer, later called Black Archer: Hawkeye
Lady Lark (she changed her after getting Blue Eagle's wings): Black Canary
Capt'n Hawk, later called Blue Eagle: Hawkman
Power Princess: Wonder Woman
Amphibian: Aquaman
Arcana: Zatanna
Nuke: Firestorm
Skrull (basically Superskrull): filling the shoes of Martian Manhunter
Tom Thumb: technically he was Atom, but not really, since Tom Thumb was about 3 feet tall and was a super inventor

In many respects, the Squadron have a creation history similar to the Imperial Guard, who were designed as alternate-reality versions of the Legion of Superheroes--but later members of the Legion did not have DC alter egos.

The Squadron's homeworld, (Earth-S) also had a sorceror supreme to fill the shoes of Dr. Strange and a Dr. Doom style evil nemesis.

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. CD is still the big dog.
