Joe Quesada Has Crossed The Line With The Smoking Ban

Yeah, that is kind of strange. The editors really should do something about that, people just might get confused and avoid it all together like I almost did.

They probably figured "Wolverine," "Millar," and "McNiven" on the cover of any comic would be enough to garner top-10 numbers regardless of whether people thought it was a mini or a one-shot or whatever.

"Old Man Logan" is a 6 parter...is what I hear. Did you hear something different Corpulent?

Joe Q is ridiculous. Just because his grandmother died of lung cancer, doesn't mean he has to take quirks away from our characters.

Fury, Logan, Thing,...I'll miss them all lighting up.:csad:

Do you really? I mean, its fun I guess but I never read a comic with those people in it and think "Wow, this scene would've kicked ass if Fury was smoking!"

I don't really miss it, but it is a bit hypocritical to single smoking out as something that can never, ever be shown while they're pimping the world's most powerful drug addict every month over in Mighty Avengers...

I think its spectacularly ******ed that they make these books for an adult audience and then want to do something this childish. I also don't understand why people are so easy going about this. I thought banning things was supposed to be kind of bad? Yes, smoking is harmful and if children see images of people smoking they will be likely to try it themselves and turn to casual sex for answers, but isn't putting an outright ban on something like smoking a little extreme and a little old school?

I'm not promoting smoking as a lifestyle choice, I look down on addicts of any kind (they're dumb and usually listen to metal) but this ban is degrading to me. Of course no one turns the page wet with excitement hoping The Thing will have a cigar in his mouth on the next panal, but that is an established trait of Ben Grimm that relates to his origins as a tough East Side thug and its stupid to take it away now just because telling readers what to think about smoking currently gives Quesada a rager.

I'd rather the old ban on mentioning homosexuality be put back in place instead of this trivial crap, because at least that would be a reflection of trying to get back on track to real superhero stories and not the hand drawn celebrity tabloids that Marvel are trying to pass as "mature" comics today.

Do they though? The material can be seen as adult, but are they making these books specifically for an adult audience? That can be argued.

But does Ben Grimm need to be smoking a cigar to represent his tough East Side thug origins? The answer is no.

But isn't the argument of people smoking in comics is ok because people in the real world smoke and Marvel tries to be real as possible. Homosexuality is real, and it's something you're born with, not something like smoking which is something you choose to do. I really think you need to step back and realize why this analogy doesn't work. I think this part of your post reveals something about you, something you may want to do some thinking about. Smoking in comics is ok, but the gays are not because it's tabloid crap. Scary thought process there.

The mainstream titles do seem to be aimed more at adult audiences these days. If they weren't, Marvel Adventures and Power Pack and all that other kid-friendly stuff probably wouldn't exist. Still, the official word on all of Marvel's publishing line other than MAX stuff is that it's all-ages.

But really, when you go back and think about it, today's comics aren't that much different than comics 20 years ago, and those were still marketed for kids. I mean, look at all the creators today who talk about reading Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen back in the day. Most of them couldn't be any older than 15 at that point.

I suppose. 15 is adolescent, though. When you say "kids," I think under 13.

Geoff Johns would have been 13 when DKR came out.

And really, I'm only talking about stuff from the eighties. Imagine all the crazy **** that came out in the seventies. The Marvel Disco era.

I picked one up at Free Comic Book Day where she fights Terrax. 'Cause, really, why not?

You want to see a ban on homosexuality? Holy crap, dude. Would your last name happen to be Phelps, by chance?

*****e bags are attracted to the hype like flies to s**t.

Haha, no. Darthphere is not Tony Stark. Not even close.
