actually that's a whole thing now, companies don't buy adspace dirrectly as much anymore as they go through a third party who tracks large groups of people, bundles you into one of these groups and shows you the ads that group is most likely to be receptive to. so if you spend lots of time looking at shoes online the ads you are most likely to see will be for shoe stores.
