Not bad. My Top 5, in no particular order:

-Sean Penn
-Vincent Cassell
-Benicio Del Toro
-Paul Bettany
-Crispin Glover

As I said earlier, getting Sean Penn to play Joker would be like getting John Kerry to play Jay Leno. The man is so stiff I think he'd shatter if he fell down.

Everyone seems to forget a formidable actor who has size, range and a dangerous look about him...Joaquin Phoenix. He would be a killer Joker.

Joaquin Phoenix is actually a rather petite 5'8" ;)

Yeah but having watched Gladiator again over the weekend Joaquin Phoenix can pull it off

Damn! What's with every actor in Hollywood being a midget! Anyway, Phoenix has a good face. Good presence.

really? didn't seem that way in sweet and lowdown. or carlito's way. or fast times. or casualties of war. the man is an actor, who has played a wide variety of characters, and who would make a fantastic joker. unlike crispin glover, who seems to play pretty much the same character in every movie he's ever been in. quiet, timid, and pathetic. pretty much everything the joker isn't.

Sean Penn is no Joker

Tim Roth, Del Toro YES!!!!

And before anybody goes see such and such

I OWN all Sean Penns films and while I respect him as an actor - he just isnt high on the Joker List for me

Crispins got the LOOK - but so has Alan Cumming --and Alan's a much better actor than Glover

I think you folks have skipped over someone that would bring a very NEW, fresh edge to the Joker. Something never tried before and something that could be dark and unfamiliar to the audience.

Imagine making the Joker a much grittier character. . . a Transvestite with class, style, wit, and a penchant for killing?

Who do I have in mind to play the new joker?

The more I think about it, the more I just love the idea of Tim Roth playing The Joker. Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn were originally higher on my shortlist, but I think that, although I would be happy with either of them being cast, Tim Roth is my current top choice to play The Joker.

Yeah, he's only 5 foot 7, but i'd say that's the ONLY thing going against him. In terms of facial structure, actinig ability and charisma, he could be great.

So, my updated shortlist:

1. Tim Roth
2. Benicio Del Toro
3. Sean Penn
4. Johnny Depp
5. Ralph Fiennes

I may seem indecisive about my pick for The Joker. But it's the same basic shortlist. It's just my top choice that keeps changing. Anyone in this shortlist would make a great Joker.

NO!!

Why would Lachy Hulme be the frontrunner for the role? He doesn't look the part, nor does he have the acting chops. I mean, what has he been in that is so great or made you think "this guy IS the Joker"? Does Nolan have a close friendship with him? What is it exactly that people see in him to want to have him play this part? I'm just curious. No offence to those who'd like to see him as :joker: .

Recently, Lee Bermejo made a Joker sketch with him... just look at that one...

Whoever they cast as the Joker, I hope he's really diabolical and twisted. Pretty much make Nicholson's Joker look like a boy scout. And the Dead End look is the way to go I think.

Joker isn't scary. He utilizes tools of death, which is what you should be scared of. The Joker himself is actually disarming in his charm and wit. Infact, on the surface, he almost seems like the most fun person in the world to hang out with.

that should really change. we've seen charming joker, in the animated series and '89. i want to see something like that Conrad Veidt photomanip Joker. i want a Joker who 'gets his laugh' from death and destruction; a nightmare version of Batman. i want his own goons and other criminals who interact with to do so reluctantly. he should be someone you'd be scared to be in a room with, because of his face and his proclivity for violence. he can giggle while stabbing you or calmly recite a bad joke while burning a prostitute's face off. completely fearless. completely insane. completely unpredictable. no dual identity for the joker. he's flashier than Batman but he's not playboy or politician. i'd just have him fill the vaccuum left by Falcone (or maybe just walks up and kills whoever does fill the vaccum). what would be threatening about the Joker is his refusal to fit into Batman's crime model. even the worst criminals have a code they live by. most won't kill small children or babies for instance. well Joker wouldn't have any of these 'limitations.' he might place a bomb in a bank; not for money but to cause chaos. he'd simply be too hard for Batman to analyze/intercept.

We all know Glover looks the part. There's no debating that. However, his voice is whiny and scared. He flat out cannot act the part.
