Oddly enough, I'd keep exactly the way he was in '89.
(Even down to the actor if Jack Nicholson wasn't so old.)
Jack Nicholson's performance kicked total butt, and so far he's the best. None of the choices above really would fit.
Tim Curry might pull it off, with alot of coaching.
But anyways, about suit and stuff, standard attire from '89.
The only issue I have with the Joker in 89 is he was really pathetic in the end. Yes, he can't beat Batman hand to hand, and the whole punching the stomach and wincing thing really was great, but he should have put up a little more of a fight, just a little.
Jim Carrey would suck as the Joker, because he doesn't have the seriousnous. Joker is wild, crazy, but he has a serious side to him, sometimes VERY serious if you've read No Man's Land. He is very brilliant and consider's his options well. Sure, he does the whole laughing hysterically and jumping around stuff, but he's also concerned with being very slick, stylish and meaningful.
Thus the purple suit.
So, bring back Jack if possible. If not, have Jack coach Tim Curry and try to have him pull it off.

Ideally, we could build a time machine, go back in time 30 years, and kidnap Jack Nicholson from the set of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". Then, we bring him to the present day and force him at gunpoint to be The Joker in the next Batman movie.

But sadly, that isn't going to happen. And now, at 68, I'd say Jack Nicholson is far too old to play The Joker. We need someone no older than their mid 40s to play the role. I'd say right now my top choices would be:

Benecio Del Toro
Johnny Depp
Sean Penn

However, there are some other good choices out there who could be great for the part as well. Yes, Jack Nicholson was an amazing Joker, but we need to look to a new generation of actors in order to cast the next Joker.

Well, Jonny Depp is out, I mean...no. He just couldn't fit as the Joker. He may think he can, but his general..presence is just too different.
Del Toro...eh, maaaaaaaaaaaybe.
Sean Penn...uh, not without some serious plastic surgery...nah.

He's been nominated for 6 Golden Globes and won twice for dramatic roles.

He's been nominated once for a BAFTA (the British Oscar) and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Anyone who has followed his career arc from sketch comedy to nominated roles opposite accomplished actors could reasonably argue that he has the chops to pull off the dramatic and comedic demands of a character like the Joker.

After all....

he's come a long way since....

playing the too-over-the-top Riddler in Batman Forever.

I would trust Jim Carrey with the role of the Joker, but i think his price tag would be prohibitive. I would love to see him as the maniacal and menacing Clown Prince of Crime. Sadly, I'm sure it won't happen.

Give me Justin Theroux or Adrien Brody. I'm afraid Crispin doesn't have the magnetism to pull off a role like this.

Heres another Contender that hasnt been mentioned

Gareth from "The Office" - Brit Comedy Actor Mackenzie Crook

He was recently in the Hollywood Blockbuster "Pirates Of The Caribbean"

He played the skinny black pearl pirate with the wooden eyeball

I love Mackenzie Crook to bits, but I'm not sure if he has the magnetic presence to play The Joker.

And Benecio Del Toro doesn't have an accent. It's just that he is often cast in roles that require him to put on a thick accent.

was he ever supposed to be funny to us? i thought the only one who got his jokes was himself, and he made fun of other people because they don't get the joke

Here is the list candidates for Joker that should be considered.....in my particular order of preference....

1. Johnny Depp- great actor, and that idea is starting to grow on me. Always wanted him to be part of a Batman film....like how i wanted Oldman and Neeson always involved. Would also be a solid name replacement for Neeson. Can play the quirky maniacal type with no problem

2. Sean Penn- Another great actor who would be be interesting choice...who can probably flourish in this type of role.

3. Vincent Cassell- this man has the face of Joker down pat....and he is a solid actor. Probably not a big enough name for the role of Joker.

4. Jude Law- he has the flexibility and range to do the role justice.....but i would prefer the above ahead of him. He would probably be a better Riddler, if he were ever to be introduced in these series of films.

5. Crispin Glover- he is already quirky and a bit of a looney in real life....and i'm sure he would do a good job....but i would choose Depp and Penn ahead of him anyday of the week.

6. Sam Rockwell- can flourish playing the maniacal looney type but i would have rather had him be ZsasZ.

movies.com says penn and roth are the top canidates, I don't know how reliable they are though?

I would love to see a pure evil, and diabolical Joker on the big screen, if he is choosen next for the sequel. (I'd rather see other villian first.) But if they went with The Joker I like the look of him in the Batman Dead End Short Film:

I think that is a great look with the straight jacket, but eventually get him out of the straight jacket and into the famous purple attire, but not a bright purple, more of a dark purple. And of course he would have to be insanely funny, not too campy or over the top, but just insane to the point where your like whoa, and it sends shivers down your spine when your watching him on the screen.

I am not really sure who I would go with for an actor on The Joker, I will get back to you on that one.

Great official Joker thread by the way.

This scared the ba-jesus out of me! This look is perfect!

really? sweet....i could see Roth also...i just don't want a rushed commitment to Glover or Lachey Hulme just yet....when there are so many better actors out there. I mean this BEGINS film has Neeson and Watanabe as main baddies.....why would Nolan and crew want to settle for less talent in the sequel to play the Joker? For the role of Dent they can go with Liev Schrieber since chances are Dent will not become Two Face until the end of the sequel anyhow. Schrieber can take the place of Cillian Murphy. A lesser known yet solid actor who will do well in the role...instead of dealing with Guy Pearces' ridiculous ego.....

I'm not sure at all. I mean Batman Begins seems to be going down an uber serious route (which I like) and that's the complete oppisite of the 3rd and 4th's of the other batman movies direction and that's probably why they didn't choose to do the Joker in the first one. It is going to be difficult you have to have a balance of belivity (Spelling???) and staying true to the character. I think Mercedes Mcnab who played Harmony on Buffy and Angel would be a good choice for Harly Quine though.

Guy Pearce is good actor, surely you can't deny that I think he will be great as Harvey Dent, he has been directed by Chris Nolan in Memento movie You think Pearce will over shadow Christian Bale? I don't think he will since Bale will be a star with first Batman Begins movie already.

Dark Knight -- ---You said Jude LAw?

I'd rather take Mckenzie Crook and all the rest over Jude LAw anyday of the week

The guy is a human vacuum sucking the life out of every part he's been in

Name ONE role he truly excelled in?

He's the male equivalent of Jennifer Connelly to me

Pretty people - but easily better actors can play their roles

Mind you I hate to say it - he was pretty good in Road To Perdition

But again there's other actors like Stuart Townsend, Jonathan Rhys Meyers etc that have that pretty boy psycho look and are just as good as Law if not better in the acting stakes

This Joker is one of the best ones i've seen on film

The only bad thing is his Dead Caterpillar eyebrows

Without eyesbrows or drawn on eye brows look creepier

Do y'all know that guy that plays the Joker in Dead End is Chekov from StarTrek - Walter Koenigs son?

I agree Del Toro's a wonderful actor and can play anything

That bit in Sin City where he was beside dwight and his voice kept going up and down and that maniacal laugh spoke JOKER to me too

don't get me wrong....Pearce is my #1 choice to be Dent/Two Face also....however, i'm losing confidence that he would join the production because of his lack of respect for "comic" films (which is a silly attitude to have especially with Nolans take on Batman) if Nolan can't persuade Pearce to come onboard then Schrieber would be another excellent choice to play Harvey.

hey....i like Jennifer Connelly.....she is awesome! Okay and in regard to Law.....granted some his roles are not that great....but the ones that standout was the robot he played in AI.....the guy in Cold Mountain and the sick hitman he played in Road to Perdition.

from what i have heard Townsend is real A-Hole!

Glad to hear other people liking Benecio Del Toro.

Penn and Roth are rumoured to be top candidates? While physically, they don't match the tall and skinny mould of The Joker, I wouldn't mind either being cast in the role. Roth has been low profile for a few years, but the villain he played in "Rob Roy" was one of my all-time faves. And Penn is the Robert DeNiro of our generation, and a good name to have aboard the movie.

And Two Face, what is your opinion on the other candidate I suggested for Two-Face over on the Two-Face Casting Thread? I suggested it as a possible alternative, but the more I tihnk about it, the more I think I like him more in th erole than Pearce and maybe even Schrieber.

who was that? I just don't see Benecio as ideal Joker material....but that is probably because i want to see Benecio as Bane. He just has to bulk up and get in the best shape of his life.
