Joker Costume for Halloween

Not open for further replies.
Hi all,

I was hoping I could get a bit of help.

After much consideration and thought, I have decided against my previous plans to "retire" my Joker costume after this year. I wish to do it just one more time...but I really want to go out with a memorable costume. I'm sure that my previous posts in this thread have been lost amongst all of the new replies, but I've been steadily working on my Joker costume for roughly four years running. It started out like this:

l_9734677f4de4b9fa4704716e288dfb81.jpg

I assembled this particular costume on a total whim one year, did the makeup myself, and for some reason people really responded to it. I even won $100 at some lame costume contest.

Years went by, and I eventually met my wondrous girlfriend, who actually knows how to apply makeup evenly and properly, got a new suit, and ended up with this year's look:

l_29654815f7604f4cb6c93c6272b816e3.jpg

I was really happy with the way everything came together in '08...but I really want to make '09 memorable. I don't have the hair, or really the desire, to do the Ledger look. I think that the costume has pretty much been perfected (to an almost creepy degree) by many on this forum.

So I've decided to take my costume in the opposite direction, cash in on my passing resemblance to Nicholson, and go full on Jack Joker this year.

This is where my desire for help comes in. I can manage to track down the plaid pants that Jack wore on eBay with no problem, and I've got a few purple blazers lying around. However, I've reached a few forks in the road:

For one...I have no idea what type of hat Nicholson wore. I know that it's not a fedora, as I own one of those, and Nicholson's had a much wider brim. I very much would like to get a hat like Nicholson's...preferably in black. I'm going to put a dark purple band on it, and then take a black trenchcoat and have someone put matching purple lining in it for me. I feel like I SHOULD know what kind of hat Nicholson wore, but for the life of me, I can't think of what it's called.

Also, I'm very interested in doing the "permasmile" that Nicholson had. I've seen some type of prostetic kit pop up on eBay in the past, however it was very cheap, and I wasn't sure of the quality of the product, much less the effort involved in applying it. Does anyone have any ideas whatsoever?

The permasmile thing isn't a must for me. I mean, if it's impossible to do, then I'll accept it. However, I very much want to be as close to screen accurate as possible this year. I never intentionally set out to do the Nicholson Joker in the past, but everyone has told me that I look like him...so I figured I'd just go all out this year. Plus, I'm a sucker for a black hat and trenchcoat on pretty much any version of The Joker. I know Nicholson switched to purple in the movie....but to be honest, I've no idea how much a purple trenchcoat would cost, and I've already got a pretty good black one for some strange reason.

Anyway, any help at all would be totally appreciated.

Also, I remember once someone mentioned that you could "seal" the green hairspray with normal hairspray. I'm very curious as to how this works. I'm not really worried about the white makeup smudging, as it was amazingly durable this past Halloween, and I've got a few more tubes of the brand that I used, so I think I can handle putting a hat on over it. However, I really don't want to take my hat off, and end up looking like a fool with totally messed up hair due to the hat. I doubt that I'd be taking the hat off very much, but I at least want to have the option to do so.

Thanks.

Ya, I think you'll need to belong to an airsoft club or a similar club to get one me thinks. I'm preety sure theres some sort of loop hole pretaining to being a recognized club member or some such. Of corse I don't live in the UK, so I don't know all about how to *sneak* one in, but my friends I know that do resin guns started casting their weapons in blues and pinks, specificaly for the UK, and they get through customs. I know of a few others who live in the UK that have received airsofts as well as resin ones. I'll shoot them a line and see where they get their airsofts at, mabey we can help you get one, or at least get you pointed in the right direction. (To introduce a little anarchy to the UK, ya know? :oldrazz::cwink:)

EDIT - Just in follow up, the Anti-prop gun law would be the only things stopping me from moving to the UK, LOL.

"Who's ever been killed by a resin gun?"

You got that right. To get a prop gun I have to be in a paintballing club or have a special exemption certificate as a re-enactor or defence officer. I can still buy what's called a Realistic Imitation Firearm but I have to pay for it to be sprayed 50% luminous orange or green which is then classed as a legal Imitation Firearm. Of course the first thing I'd do is spray the damn thing black and silver again but just by doing that I'm committing an offence by changing it back into a Realistic Imitation Firearm again. It's male cow dung, I tell ya. :cmad:

What annoys me is that these stupid laws only affect the law-abiding citizen because the criminals, by the very fact that they're criminals, ignore the law anyway! It just makes it easier to prosecute them if they're caught, that's all. I mean, between you, me and everyone else on this board I could drive up to Manchester and get myself a nice REAL Mac 10 and probably even a REAL Glock 19 for under £500. I could go to a pub down the road, speak to a dodgy geezer and have myself a nice little Browning 9mm for £100. Yet to get a wee little pretend gun for a harmless movie costuming group I have to jump through a million hoops or risk getting imprisoned. :cmad:

Don't move to the UK unless you like being cold and damp and being told what to think and say. Big Brother is alive and well over here, believe me. :csad:

I wish we had a real Joker over here to stir things up a bit

/Rant

Thanks for any help you can offer !! :yay:

i completely agree with your statement on the effectiveness of UK gun laws.

laws dont keep criminals from carrying guns... it gives them the advantage. it takes away innocent citizens chance to defend themselves.

i once got into a argument with some uk natives that thought the american gun policy was crazy. i told them i'd rather have the right to shoot back than pretend no one would ever try to shoot me.

Heh, I got something partialy right for once! :woot::oldrazz: LOL.

Ya, the UK laws deffintly need to be re-drawn up. As you said, a criminal having a gun, and a citizen having a gun, are two completly diffrent things. Enspcialy prop weapons, considering the resin ones don't fire, and never will be able to, the best they can do is be blunt weapons. I myself would MUCH prefer being held up by a resin prop than an actual gun.

I think its meant to protect the criminal and citizens around them from Police gunfire. (If the cops have gun...) If Bob the citizen is standing around Jim the criminal's resin gun, and the cops shoot at him, the bullets may hit Bob the Citizen.

The way the law works though, meens that when Jim the Criminal sees the fuzz coming, he shoots at them first with his real gun, and then runs Bob the citizen over in his getaway. :whatever:

I'll upload the pics. I have of the Bank Heist Joker here today and post 'em tonight for ya. :yay:

Hey its Christmas eve evrybody! Merry Christmas Eve! :oldrazz:

p.s. Kelikala is a freakin' goddess at this cosplay game and you should listen to her.

Lexi, you're gonna make me blush... :O

Then again, you've seen me looking like Will Turner... so you know how deep of a range I've got when it comes to costumes and what not. LOL

God, Kelikala, you made that awesome of a costume for $30? I'm not of driving age yet, so it's been hard to go to thriftstores regularly, but your Goodwill luck inspires me.

Oh, and Kelikala, mad envy over you shoes!

I'm quite proud of what I put together from my Goodwill shopping! Granted, it took stopping at three different Goodwill stores to get it all, but it was well worth it in the end! The most expensive things were the shoes ( which cost $5.00 at a thrift store ) and the socks ( which I got at Hot Topic for $7.00 ). The shoes were actually a light camel brown color to begin with and the soles were this god awful red, so I painted the soles dark brown and dirtied up the shoes with paint. I bent the toe up so they looked more 'clownish' and wa la, my shoes were born!

LMAO Kelikala! I can just imagine the conversation the people at the photo place had about that pic., LOL! It was deffintly awsome! I brought it to my Great Grandparents house here a bit ago, because they don't beleive that I'm not the only person who costumes as the Joker, and they absoutly didn't get it. So congrats, you confuse old people! :woot::oldrazz: LOL.

"Here, look at this, I got this awsome Joker Christmas card from a girl on the internet I know."
*they look at the card and become very quiet*
"Thats her on the card."
"This is you?"
"No, its the girl who sent me the card."
"Thats not you?"
"No. *facepalm* That dosn't make any sence! She sent me this card, for Christmas. It her on the front, with a Santa hat on."
"Oh...ya. I get it now."
"No you don't."

LOL! :oldrazz::cwink:

I've always wondered what goes through people's minds when they get weird crap in at the photo lab to print.

"Hey, check out this card that's coming in"
"WTF? Is that the Joker?"
"I think so. He doesn't look to happy."
"Yeah, maybe we should print those cards quick and make sure they're done in an hour like we promised."
"Ya think?"
"Yeah, I wouldn't want him coming in and giving me a set of scars for the Holidays if the order wasn't done."

I also got a kick out of you showing your grandparents the card! I showed my family as well, but they don't get the whole 'dressing up for fun' thing so they thought it was 'stupid'. Lets see how stupid they think it is when they find a grenade in their stockings Christmas morning. LOL

I think Kelikala's costume hands down shows how awsome a costume can be, for a very little ammount. I'd MUCH rather here someone got something awsome for cheap than to hear someone tell me how much they spent on their costume.

* is proud * You guys have really made me feel good about my costume when in the back of my mind I kept second guessing myself because I didn't go for screen accuracy. I just wanted my whole costume to feel un-costume like you could say. Like it was something I always had laying around.

I also got my shoes from Keli (Your pretty active in my Joker religious life, ya know? LOL) for a realy good price, LOL.

HAHAHAHA - maybe I should start a church!

Oh wait! Got my nurse lapel watch! LOL I already broke the pin slot lock on it, LOL!

OMG! You broked it! Which reminds me... I still need to 'rebuy' my nurse outfit since I sold the other before Halloween because I opted to wear my regular Joker costume instead. However, I did take a photo of myself last week in my 'old' dress ( the vintage 1980's sweater dress ). Aparently my friends are more creeped out seeing me dressed as 'Nurse Joker' than regular Joker. Can't understand why? :hehe:

xyclz.jpg

OMG THAT WAS A LONG POST!!!

Ok, I'm outta here! Oh, and since it's Christmas Eve, have a Happy Holiday everyone! Hope you all get what you wished for this Christmas!!!

LOL, a Joker church wouldn't be the weirdest church I've seen! I've seen some preety odd named ones in my travels, lol.

Ya, I think I've fixed the lapel whatch. Or...realy, I fixed it half. While trying to get it back on, I tried it one way, just to see if it would go back on. And "Taa-daaa!" it did. Just I put it on backwards, so now I need to...uh-rebreak it? And fix it. Again. LOL.

Rebuy your Nurse outfit at once! :D

I think its meant to protect the criminal and citizens around them from Police gunfire. (If the cops have gun...) If Bob the citizen is standing around Jim the criminal's resin gun, and the cops shoot at him, the bullets may hit Bob the Citizen.

I'm afraid it's more about protecting the banks from being held up with imitation firearms. Since a bloke in my part of the world successfully held up a number of banks over a few years with nothing more than a chair leg in a plastic bag I find their arguments invalid!!! :woot:

I can't wait to see the pics! Thanks a lot! :woot:

xx

LMAO! *eyeballs chair leg* The Joker sssssooooo needs a table leg with a knife in it now! LOL...a table leg. Thats hillarious! Mabey they should outlaw table legs instead, LOL.

Just got confirmation my Glock is on its way, can't wait to see it! :D

Correction, looks like I've got like 40+ ref pics.! I'll leave 'em up here over the Holidays, just let me know when you guys have saved what you need so I can delete 'em. :p There's ref. pics. for just about evrything right there, the shirt, the Glock, the string, the socks, the shoes, etc. A thank you goes out to evryone who took these and helped out! Dig in! :D

"And...here, we...go!"

Glock and Grenade images :

Note the lack of switch on the slide, which meens it wasn't a Glock 18, but a 17. It could be a "kitbash" weapon.

And here's the new one showing the diffrent types of grenades inside the duffle, which does NOT match the Hot Toys version. (neither does the HT shirt, but thats another story, LOL.)

And here's a shot I have of my costume compared to the original. The suit I have is actualy a brown suit, that I got for $4, it was on sale from $8, LOL. But just like the original costume, this suit seems to rely on lighting for its color. In all the pics. I have, it shows up as a black/grey, just like the sceen used one, but in reality, its a brownish color. It even has the correct ammount of buttons down the front (two) and on the sleeves (four). Deffintly an outstanding find, I about peed myself when I first saw it on the rack, LOL. Can't wait to get my duffle bag. [/school girl]

I'd give someone's arm for a mask like USMCrice's he posted. ;) Seriously. :p

Santa must of heard the crazy coming from my post, because I just got my duffle. In person it looks perfect! Just gotta cut the hand straps off of it. :D I stuffed it with newspaper for now, LOL. I see now that there's certain places that need more to keep the rigid "square" look to it. Oh well, I iz happy! :D The gloves, although you can't see 'em were donated to the crazy cause by Kelikala, still can't thank you enough! :D

I think I may buy a rigid high quality mask now, not having one may drive me....crazier. :wow: Gotta work on the pose too, LOL. :oldrazz:

Just pulled a couple new photos off of my phone...

My Ledger Joker

My Bermejo Joker

Nice pictures Michael! I think I prefer your Bermejo Joker over your Ledger one... seems more real and sinister. =]

Oh, turns out my fourth wig is made not of human hair but pure ginger FAIL.

My hair really isn't going to be long enough to make into a Ledger style, but it is almost the same length as Mr. J's is in the Killing Joke.
I'm considering a sort of mash-up of both styles - keeping TDK's makeup and scars and most of the costume... but with TKJ hair and a couple other accessories?
I would love to find a gun that has a CLICK. CLICK. CLICK. flag, but I'm having enough trouble finding one that just says BANG!

Having just been introduced to the comics I've really grown to love the other Joker styles and want to make them part of my costume. Would this be a good idea do you think? Or something of a travesty? XD

I couldnt figure it out before but I think you've got this weirdly pleasing sort of Jello Biafra vibe going on in that one.

i took aspects from other incarnations of the joker fom my ensemble. i say do it, but you need to make sure it gels with the rest of your look.

but i do think bolland tkj inspired hair would look great with tdk style face.

for the bang gun try an online magic shop. madhatter should have them. but if you want one that looks like a real gun you will need to customize it.

Wow Jodo - thanks a lot! I've been downloading like crazy. I think we'll be looking at getting a rigid mask as well although it won't be cheap. We have to pass the scrutiny of the costuming council and members of the public/geeks like me who'll inspect every aspect of the outfit at any events we may go to.
Hope you're recovered from Christmas. I'm not. :csad:

xx

No probolem, did you get the all/what you need? As I find anymore, etc. I can send 'em to you if you'd like. :)

I got about $190 for Christmas, so I may buy one, I don't know yet. Its either a mask for the bank heist, or a coat for my suit....or, or, or....:p ;)

EDIT -Well, funny story, I thought I had $240 for Christmas, but it turns out someone can't count the money out right while filling the envelopes, so I had to give some back, LMAO!

I think I've got everything now thank you very much. I had a load of photos here too but was really grateful for the display costume (in the glass cabinet) with close-ups of the shirt and the guns. I never noticed the socks before, which made me laugh. They look like Christmas socks :woot: and just the type of silly things he'd wear, bless his evil little heart!

If there's anything I can send you, let me know. I've got half a PC full of stills, manips, artwork etc that I've nabbed.

Hugs :clown:

Thanks, guys. I prefer the Bermejo version as well. Which is why it was the costume I used to go out in...

I'm sure everyone here remembers my "joker dirt" attempt back in June/July.... followed by the parade on July 4th.

well, after some work and time, I have this:
l_43a946583b2647a48aa987506173ee9e.jpg

Hazelnut that picture just resulted in my keyboard being sprayed with orange juice.

Michael, deffintly love your Bermejo! :D

Batbrat, as I said over on the Garrison boards, love your coat! :D

In an unreleated note...Just relised Chuckles has a revolver in what would be his left hand during the bank heist. Took me 12 veiwings, LOL. Its only seen in two frames from my DVD player, you'll need to step through them to see it, but sure enough its there!

Ahhhh, I found the most AMAZING tie at Goodwill! I was gonna post a picture, but I'm too lazy. Three dollars baby! I just wanted to tell someone. My mom won't get sufficiently excited for me :]
So far, I've spent $10- 3 for tie, 7 for socks.

Awsome, did you end up going for color, or for pattern? Or even something else?
