Long time lurker here on the forum. A lot of you ladies and gentlemen have some amazing Joker costumes, and I finally figured out how to add a post to this site (I am, occasionally, quite slow). I had a blast doing a Joker costume this year, and I got tons of tips and inspiration from this site (thanks to everyone for that, by the way). It's been years since I went all-out on a costume, and I didn't realize how much I missed doing it. I'm trying to convince the guys in my sketch troupe to go as the Ghostbusters next year...
I wasn't gonna do the Joker this year (figured there'd be too many) but my delightful girlfriend Alice found a purple ladies trench coat while we were at a Value Village (a Canadian store, kind of "Salvation Army meets Wal-Mart"). We found the pants to go with it, and
kind of managed to scam the store into giving us the whole combo for $10. I assumed it was a sign from God, and everything else kind of fell into place after that (though I never found a great vest - I dyed the one I'm wearing in the pictures, but it's still mostly grey. And it shrank. Grr.) My favourite part are the gloves, which I got for $8 from a street vendor in Chinatown.
The make-up was my first venture into doing anything this detailed. I got the instructions from a video on Youtube - used collodion and fake skin. My hair wasn't quite long enough (and it's usually super straight) so it took a long time to get it even halfway right (and even longer to wash out. Which was not fun at the end of the night, when I was exhausted and drunk). But it was all quite worth it.
I know I'm rambling, but I figure if anyone's gonna understand, it's the folks on this forum. So here's some of my (belated) Halloween pictures:
- Here I am up close. I think this is the end of the night on Tuesday, after my girlfriend and I attended a Halloween comedy show where
no one else was dressed up. Grumble...
- Here's one of the better pictures of my costume, actually from Halloween night. The jacket was a really dark purple, so most pictures I have make it look almost black. Oh, and contrary to the look on my face, I'm having a blast.
- Here I am next to some guy, who was delighted that I correctly identified him as Elijah Snow from "Planetary".
- The pencil alone was enough to impress most of my friends.
- This is a random girl I encountered at my local comic shop's Halloween party, who had (I thought) a pretty sweet Harley Quinn costume. Apparently after my girlfriend and I left for another party, I actually won a prize for best Joker costume (there wasn't much competition). I assume my gift certificate was donated to an orphanage, or something.
Alot of details on the costume aren't exact, and those details gnaw at my soul (the shoes are black, and my pants aren't pinstripe, and the shirt is a basic purple one, and uh, I really only spent about $50 on the whole enterprise). But I was pretty happy with how it all shook out. And I got compliments all night - the general consensus was that I was the best new Joker people had seen (though that might have been the booze talking...)
Feel free to let me know what you think! Can't wait for the DVD this week!
