Joker 'JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX' (Phillips and Phoenix return for the sequel) General News & Discussion Thread

Still interested in seeing this, strictly for Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn though. Outside of a few shots and character moments in the first flick, I wasn't really feeling Joker in the way the rest of the world seemingly ate it up.

I wonder if this sequel would have been better received if they just went with a more straightforward adaptation of Mad Love. I feel like Philips could have still told a broader story beyond comic book characters that could have still scratched that same itch. It's not like Mad Love can't be adapted to include a few musical numbers here and there.

I don't get the vibe it has musical numbers because Philips really wanted to do a musical. I feel like it's there to try and... let's say cover up the lack of desire here. It's bold because it has musical elements.

The ending is the only thing that sounds remotely appealing about this movie apart from Gaga existing. Dumb as rocks, yes, but also absolutely hilarious.

You know what, you all are convincing me to give Ressurections another shot. I was so angry with it the first time i saw it i never looked back but i’m wondering if being three years removed from it and a better understanding of Lana’s mindset might make me reappraise it a bit better now.

I just remember the trailers freakin kicked a** and the actual movie was none of that but i guess it never was supposed to be, to begin with.

I think I might have disliked it had I paid to watch it...but streaming I think it was pretty good. I liked that it was obvious they had something to say and did so. I also like that it wasn't what the studio wanted or what was expected. It was 100% a middle finger to WB and well studios in general and this idea that all we as fans care about is legacy sequels and not quality.

And NPH was great in it!

YMMV though.

It is going definitely rotten, lower than that. This is a given.

This is a movie that criticizes it's own audience, especially those who 'idolized' Joker in a way after the first instalment. It is very self aware in this regard. Most will leave the room feeling very bitter, likely, and this is not something the GA does tend to enjoy or be that open minded to.

This is hardly an entertainment piece. Seemingly mostly a collection of critiques by Phillips and Phoenix by what I guess they consider misconceptions about how part of the audience absorbed Arthur/Joker in the initial.

I'd say it has a very similar self reflection than Matrix Resurrections in this yearn. Similar rooted premise in such manner.

EDIT: ooo nice to see people noticed the Resurrections similarity, as well!

Korea uses eggs for their version of Rotten Tomatoes... Interesting.

I've just read the comments on a French media aimed at “geeks” and I wasn't expecting such a rejection of the film.

Note that the overwhelming majority say they love the first film but :
- don't see the point of a sequel.
- are put off by the musical aspect.
- are mildly curious, but can wait for streaming.

This is very different from the usual entouthiasm when the first film is referenced...
The figures are going to be interesting, because we're talking about what's still the target audience here...

Also, with today's release of the movie in every theaters, the press score has dropped to an average of 3/5 and the public score on what's the main cinema website here is 2.7/5 (4.4/5 for the fist one).

The form is still praised, but the content seems to struggle to convince.

Sounds like Phillips should have talked to Joe Dante about what to do if WB comes begging for sequels. Gremlins 2 is amazing because he hated the idea of a sequel so he made something ridiculous! :-)

This sounds like a movie that the contrarians and edgelords of the Hype will adore a few months from now

We have Edge Lords around here? Must not be in any threads I read! (thank Zod!)

I now decided to wait til its streaming.

I decided to just buy Lady Gaga's CD instead for my collection.

You weren't here during the TDKR. The reals who wanted to stop evil like Batman.

I mean, he would have just let some other director direct the sequel if he didn't want to.

I have no issue with Phillips making a weirdly hostile meta troll movie. If anything I'm a little sad it mostly sounds boring rather than fully insane with that aspect. This truly feels like The Hangover, Part II of Joker movies.
