The Avengers Joss Whedon leading on "Avengers" short list of directors

Exactly. The people who are happy about this seem to be more happy for Whedon himself, rather than the Avengers.

Seriously. Whedon is good at what he does. What he does is schloky, cheesy, try hard to be hip, ultra femistic soap operas.

That has no place in an Avengers film.

You know I have much respect Ace, or at least, you should know as you were one of my favorite posters back on the X-board!

But I'll have to disagree. Take the current erm... "debate" I was having just now, Raimi also was good at what he did--making ultra-hokey horror films. Yet managed to put a lot of that aside for Spider-man 1 & 2 to produce quality products.

Whedon could do this as well, or it could be as you said, and he'll slide his hokey, cheesy side in and we get Spider-man 3.

This movie is kind of a gamble like that anyway. Spielberg or Jackson or fan favorite directors thrown up for suggestion for nearly every film imaginable are just as fallible to the challenges presented by a movie that is going to combine four major film franchises into one "ultra-sequel."

3) Being a fan of something can be very important when you are auditioning or in the case of directors interviewing. If I as a producer looking for a director for say "Buck Rogers" and I have two directors 1) Doesnt know who Buck Rogers is 2) Is a massive Buck Rogers fan and can quote episodes and has the action figure, which one is going to get the job.

But of course you are going to dismiss my concerns because I dont worship at the feet of Whedon of claim to be a browncoat

Uhm, wouldn't this be the same for... you know, every movie? And every director? I mean, I hate Tim Burton, (or at least current Burton) so I don't get excited when he's attached to a new film and expect something I hate. You aren't going to find a director everyone loves.

But i really am against this. I would give a chance to anyone else, i really would. But i DESPISE Joss Whedon's work... apart from some of his comic book writing.

And you mention Raimi as though his Spidey films were perfect. They weren't. No not even 1 and 2, which i did enjoy. But they were still hokey and cheesy and melodramatic bordering on soap opera like in some parts.

Like i said, Whedon and his VERY distinctive style is suited to something like Runaways or Dazzler.

And Whedon does have a very distinctive style... which is not suited to Avengers... at all. AT ALL. He isn't just gonna change his style is he?

He has a very distinctive style. That style is not suited to Avengers. FACT.

And he is not gonna change his style. Same way Kevin Smith will never change his very distinctive style.

I think Marvel just likes the potential here and Wheldon can possibly be the next go-to guy for them, ala Singer. You get a veteran director you are more comfortable with for this (Spielberg and Scott were never coming people), and there is probably no real commitment there long term, or no real vision since the guy would have been working with the same basic ground work already laid out. The same will apply to Wheldon, even more so because of his limited resume, but you give him his big shot, and a great supporting team, and he'll be fine. Marvel can slowly groom him as their go-to director for big franchise movies. He was going to get an opportunity eventually. Fox would have snatched him up for First Class, or WB would have brought him in for something. Maybe not on the scale of Avengers, I say grab him while you can and I think he is more than capable, and a guy you can lock up long term.

No movie is perfect, I don't expect them to be. Soap opera is actually not even part of Raimi's style. Just comedy. I assume the SOAP effect had more to do with his inexperience in drama than the love for cheese as we TRULY saw the cheese pour out in Spidey 3.

I, myself, am a writer with a very distinctive style. I can assure you that even your most beloved way of working will be put aside for your obligations. Avengers is a different beast because it is no longer Whedon's baby, it's Marvel's, and 3 other directors' who raised this baby and tossed it from one another like a rejected orphan.

The child could either grow up in Avengers as an emotionally scarred beast, or appreciative to all the good upbringing it'll have from a group of talented people. (This example just got weird. )

I'm going to check out some of Whedon's work, but as long as it isn't Burton or Uwe Boll, I'm pretty much fine with giving anyone a chance.

How has he ever shown he is more than capable?

The X-Men are NOTHING like the Avengers. NOTHING.

And the most memorable thing about his X run was when he turned Wolverines mind into that of a 8 year old girl. Which i admit was pretty awesome.

But again, that's another Whedonism. GIRL POWER! Turn the overly macho, bravado filled man into a woman! GREAT!

See you know what is gonna happen in Avengers now, Thor, Cap and Stark will be defeated then Wasp will come in and save the day.

And yea, don't try to belittle me because i don't like crap TV shows like Buffy and Angel. You like them? Fine. But using them as indicators that he can make a great Avengers film is the dumbest thing i've ever heard.
