The Avengers Joss Whedon leading on "Avengers" short list of directors

Favs was a comedian that I scoffed at. Ledger was a pretty boy that I dismissed. LL was a crazy action nut known for the Transporter. Sam Raimi was a comedy/horror specialist.

Favs is a big Iron Man fan and got the job because of that
Ledger I still dismiss(didnt like his Joker)
LL still is a crazy action nut which is good for comicbook movies since they are action films
Sam Raimi's quirkiness is what made him perfect for Spidey(and also being a big Spidey fan)

However they all have had successful movies to point to....Whedon(regardless of what you personally think of Serenity) does not

I am fine with this. Whedon has proven he knows how to handle ensembles, he's more than versed in the source material, and he knows how to mesh drama, action, pathos and comedy(both broad and self-aware) in his stuff. Complaints mostly are going to be because fanboys had dream directors they wanted to take this on, and now that they ain't suddenly Joss gets the vitriol.

Wrong, Favreau isn't doing the Avengers because he's going to be coming off Iron Man 2 and jumping onto Iron Man 3 which is heavily rumored to be coming out that same year as the Avengers.
No he's not

He's going to be doing Cowboys & Aliens starring Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde and Harrison FOrd

Honestly I dont think its that. Joss Whedon is a polarizing figure. You either hate his stuff of love it. Like I posted before people for it tend to be Buffy/Whedon/Firefly fans people against it are people who generally dispise his work.

exactly...how hard can it be to merge tech and mythology when he is merging aliens and cowboys???

There are plenty of Iron Man fans. Just because you've done some comedy and love Iron Man doesn't qualify you to make a film based on the character.

LL has done plenty of action films. Plenty of crappy action films at that.

Sam WASN'T perfect for Spidey. He just did a bang up job.

LL had no successful movies in terms of quality (maybe commercial success however.) Favs successes such as Elf hardly qualified the man for bringing shell head to life.

Whedon's got his strong points and his low points (probably, as I haven't seen any of his work.)

Who knows, the man may even save us from Zak Penn.

Actually he did have one. Unleashed, which got decent reviews and was the main reason that he got the TIH job.

I'm EXTREMELY excited about this. I'm biased, I admit it. Whedon is probably my favorite tv writer/creator ever and I'm a massive fan of Buffy and Angel and a decent sized fan of Firefly/Serenity, dollhouse, and dr. horrible. But...I've always thought this was the next logical step for him.

Most of his detractors have only seen either the film Serenity or an odd out of context episode of one of his shows. Watch one whole season of Buffy or Angel and whether you enjoy it or not, you'll at the minimum see why he got the gig. Those shows were just comic books without capes in every way imaginable. From the romantic relationships to the way villains were built up to all the magical broughhaha that occured, all extremely comic booky. Honestly, when those shows were in their heyday, i felt like I was watching live action x-men and when the x-men movies came out, I felt Whedon should've done them and ....then he wrote the comic(which was stellar). Fox knew it too which is why he was breifly courted to do X-men 3 but declined due to wanting time to do his own thing with it and not just making himself a point and shoot guy.

X-men and the Avengers are not THAT different. They are in some ways but either way, Whedon has proven he can handle a large ensemble cast, give equal time to all characters involved, is fantastic at writing moving stories and dialogue, the man can do it all. I also believe that whatever peoples issues are with his Serenity film are more because of the low budget than anything else. He did what he could with that 30 million or whatever. Give a man of this level of talent 200 and you're gonna see some ***** that'll turn you white :)

I recognize he isn't perfect(I enjoyed Dollhouse overall but it's a real mixed bag at times) but I think he's as close to perfect as we can get for this.

Seriously, some of the other suggestions are silly to me. Spielberg? Jackson? Do those guys give two *****s about superheroes? Not really, otherwise, they probably would've tackled some by now at this point.

Whedon is perfect for this and if this movie isn't at least "good", i will eat an freshly squirted turd. I'm that certain that it'll be good.

I forgot about Unleashed. Ironically, much like TIH, it was quite the opposite compared to all of his crap and received decent reviews and yet underperformed at the box office. Which really still wouldn't make him a "successful" director. He's able to bring in the bucks or produce a decent flick, yet he has yet to mesh those two.

It's either produce crap but money, or a great product with no reward.

Obviously the evidence of Iron Man and buzz behind Iron Man 2 beg to differ

and he did a mediocre Hulk movie

Sam WASN'T perfect for Spidey. He just did a bang up job.
Bang up job??? He pretty much turned Spider-man into a multi million dollar franchise.

Again the man was a fan and whatever he said to the producers they bought off on

Whedon's got his strong points and his low points (probably, as I haven't seen any of his work.)

Question: If the put "From the creative mind behind Buffy the Vampire slayer" before his credit do you think it will help of hinder this movie.

Stephenie Meyer has an affinity for Vampires....should she write Blade 4?????

Yes. Spielberg wouldn't be good for Avengers because he has shown no previous interest in superheroes...

Are you ****ing kidding me?

Joss Whedon will bring his "Whedonisms" to the Avengers. And that is unnacceptable in my book. I don't want the characters changed from their solo movies. I don't want "Whedonized" versions of Cap, Iron Man and Thor. And that is what will happen.

And i have seen more than a few odd episodes of Buffy and Angel. I've seen whole series' of them, unfortunately.

Judging his ability to make a mega budget Avengers film on the likes of Buffy and Angel is the dumbest thing i've ever heard.

If you are a fan of his this is good news....if not then its not

I love how you seem to be trying to start a conflict out of thin air rather than a debate about the topic of which I broke into this thread with. :woot: I missed the Hype.

My point was Favs made an awesome movie, but wasn't expected to. LL made an awesome movie (whether or not you agree... I don't truly care to be perfectly honest) yet wasn't expected to. Raimi made an awesome trilogy despite the third, and yet was in no way a perfect fit for the wall crawler. Ledger won an award for portraying one of the best screen/comic book villains we've ever seen (again, I don't really care if you agree it's a general consensus,) yet was never expected to.

I really wish you'd stop using "being a fan" as an excuse to hire someone. The reality of it is, Marvel is probably hiring cheap directors that they see potential in so that things can be "win-win." Marvel makes profit by not paying them much, and the directors break out more into the business (or break back into in other's cases.)

And for the fourteenth time, I've never seen nor experienced any of Whedon's work except for a few minutes of the horrid Buffy film. Even if I'll hate his previous work, it has no indication to me as to what the man can/will do for his future projects.

Now, I hardly doubt you're going to grasp what I am getting at no matter how many times I repeat it, but please stop quoting my posts to respond to for your Whedon bashing. Find someone who gives a crap and wants to fuel your nerd rage with a quoting war, I'm not defending the man nor condemning him; I'll make up my mind when I see a trailer.

Exactly. The people who are happy about this seem to be more happy for Whedon himself, rather than the Avengers.

Seriously. Whedon is good at what he does. What he does is schloky, cheesy, try hard to be hip, ultra femistic soap operas.

That has no place in an Avengers film.

I agree with everything Frostbite has said, except I have seen one bit of his work- Dr. Horrible, which I watched last night and it was real good. Pulled off emotion and strong character development in a 42 min short comedy film. I think all the arguments roach has provided against his points are just fallacious logic that don't even need response.

wouldn't probably be worse than the first three

What? Blade 1 and 2 own. They completely reinvented the character and made him cool again. Undeniable.

If it wasn't for those films, Blade would still be relegated to the comic book history books, instead of joining the X-Men.

Yes i do know that. Coz that's what Whedon does.

He tried to change Wonder Woman. His script got rejected.

He tried to change the X-Men. His script got rejected.

Fair enough his run on the X comics was ok. But it's mostly remember because he turned Wolverine into a 8 year old girl. Oh did you catch that? He turned a macho man into a girl! Whedonism!!!!!!!

Seriously, he'd be alright for a Runaways film or a Dazzler film. Not Avengers.
