Part of the problem is that we're so used to seeing heavily male-dominated entertainment that when anything comes out that is more even-handed with female characters that are as strong as the male characters, some view it as "too girly".

Agreed. As I said earlier in this thread, all Whedon has ever done is give his female characters the same sort of prominence male character enjoy everywhere. What's more, the role of women in superhero films (and in comics themselves) is so ludicrously sad that the participation of someone who will write female characters who are actually interesting is a blessing, not something to worry about.

Agreed. I love Buffy, and I still HATE the 1st season. When my roommate was making me watch the whole series, we started from the beginning, and I was like, "Are you kidding me!!???" I didn't start warming up to the series until the 2nd half of the 2nd season, but by a certain episode in S3 ("The Zeppo"), I pretty much acknowledged that it was kinda brilliant.

Still, if someone's looking for a stand-alone season of the show to sample, I'd probably recommend Season 5, as that one's after all the high school/teen-angst stuff that some people just can't get past.

Everybody likes Xander, so I'd say "No." My favourite is Wesley, actually; from spineless to unyielding badass in three seasons, haha.

JJ Abrams did the same with Alias with a strong female protagonist, yet he was never accused of only been able to excel in female-centric stories. I hope Whedon, if he does indeed pulls it out with The Avengers, will shed this misconception that he can only write female characters.

Actually, Xander is my least favorite character, and I loved that episode, so I guess our opposing stances kinda make sense.

Amen, Wesley was one of the main reasons why I kept tuning in. I must say he didn't become truly badass until Season 4. Alexis Denisof is such a great actor as well. Makes me real disappointed that no one has really noticed his talents and started to feature him in more films.

i didn't care for wesley until the later half of angel (he kinda became prep-time batman in angel season 5...minus the suck)

It might be fine. I mean, Whedon did once write a script version for X-Men, so he might be aware of how to deal with a film with so many superheroes. But, then again, the Avengers can be viewed VERY differently than a X-Men film.

I hope for the best.

He will have Fav as an executive producer, so Whedon most likely will not be strayed away from what Marvel Studios is trying to aim for.

And I'll add that like others, Wesley is my favorite, too. His whole evolution was just so amazing.

As for the Avengers, uh yeah, I'll echo the cries of "Keep Dushku Away!" Fillion is the only Whedon alum I could really see fitting in here. He's just the right level of "TV-famous" to play one of the more minor (but still important) characters in this film (ala Sebastian Stan as Bucky, but more well-known).

Nothing against Joss Whedon but not everything he touches is gold, so now the dialogue will have hip smart quips that speak to today's goth teen repressed society with a little pop culture references thrown in, that worked in the 90's dude.

I dont like Whedon's name associated with comic things... he seems to ruin them for me (my opinion) I dont like his stuff.
Hated Buffy, Angel, couldn't give a crap about Firefly and the movie or whatever.
Plus... MUSICAL EPISODES ! :

I'd hate to skip through, but I get it. Teen vampire slayer. I think I could skip to the good stuff. Because what I saw was... blech. I hope it's night and day as you say.

Not that I really care though, Serenity was the ****.

Serenity is awesome. But you'll enjoy it so much more if you watch the superior series it was based off of...the criminally underrated Firefly.

It was one season (14 episodes, I believe) of pure awesomeness. Of the 14 episodes, I"d say 13 were pure gold. Rent them and you'll end up enjoying Serenity even more.

Taking a little detour for the moment, I also just thought of one positive aspect about this, regardless of whether or not you think Whedon is a good or terrible choice, and completely irrelevant to the quality of the movie - he's known for great fan interaction, so I think we'll probably be able to expect a higher level of communication from him than most of the Marvel movies (with the possible exception Favreau/Iron Man), and some pretty wonderful DVD extras, too. Again, not an argument in his favor as a director or anything, just a little something to look forward to for those of us who ARE still excited about the movie (if/when this gets finalized, of course), lol.

JJ has been pretty open about working on Cap. Only really Branagh has kept his film under tight wraps, so I think Whedon more joins the pack on that front than is the outsider.

Well, I was referring to much more than just talking about the movie - he's more of a "let's give the fans a treat" kinda guy - but I see your point, too.
