Variety MARCH 30, 2017:
‘Batgirl’ Movie: Joss Whedon to Direct Standalone Film (EXCLUSIVE)
Batgirl is flying solo. The superheroine is getting her own standalone movie from filmmaker Joss Whedon.

Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl pic for Warner Bros. as part of its DC Extended Universe.

No other producers are currently attached. Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, is overseeing with Jon Berg and Geoff Johns. The new project originated in the past month.

Batgirl is one of the most popular superheroes in the world, but has never gotten her own movie. The project will also feature other characters from the world of Gotham.

Batgirl first appeared in DC Comics in 1967 as Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon in “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!” by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino.

The Batgirl project will be the second movie from DC Films to star a female lead after Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman,” which opens June 2. Extensive footage of the film was shown Wednesday at CinemaCon.

Whedon would be making a big move from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to its DC counterpart, having written and directed “The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” for Disney-Marvel. He also created the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” “Firefly,” “Dollhouse,” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe launched with 2013’s “Man of Steel,” followed by last year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad.” Its upcoming films, which have already been dated, include “Wonder Woman”; “Justice League,” debuting Nov. 17; and “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa and hitting theaters in December of 2018.

The studio is also developing a “Suicide Squad” sequel and “Gotham City Sirens,” a spinoff to “Suicide Squad” with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn character; “The Batman,” starring Ben Affleck with Matt Reeves directing; a “Shazam” film and a Black Adam spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson; and projects based on the Flash and Cyborg characters.

Whedon is repped by CAA.

What a weird thread title to be reading. :)

But I'm in, I love Joss.

Wouldnt be fair if we took iconic female character and made it male? Like what Hollywood is doing with male roles lately? Gender bending them. Maybe cast even black man, for diversity reasons?

Would it be still called Batgirl. Cause there is no reason what is so specific about this character to be female, right?

This is pretty much the perfect combination, I hope he uses the Gail Simone run as the basis for the film.

And Aaron Sorkin just so happen to be in talks with DC and Marvel....

Ooh, a walk and talk Batman movie set in Wayne Manor?

Lucius Fox: The Movie?

Daily Planet?

I'm not entirely sure this movie is necessary.

I feel like this is largely DC trying to prove how female-friendly they are. One of the most vocal feminists in Hollywood doing a female-led movie. That's cool and all. But it's a secondary character, and one that frankly, I don't see carrying the weight of her own movie very well.

It would've made more sense to let Joss do the Wonder Woman movie, since he worked on his version of it however long ago.

I'm very glad we are getting Batfamily. I hope there will be robin too. (not stand alone movie of course)

No to Batwoman and Damian though.

I'm thinking Whedon is probably gonna go with the most recent Batgirl of Burnside version.

Batgirl is quite important character in Batworld though. She has strong connections to Gordon,Batman and Nightwing.

Batfamily can give deeper look at Batman character. Nolan's batman had it with Alfred,Fox,Rachel & Dent. BvS Batman looked cool but lacked of depth.

Also it's easier to make a great movie non-superpowered characters. (or at least not god level)

I feel a Hailie Steinfield vibe as far as casting. If you're going about college age Babs.

Excellent idea. Truly innovative. You could take Batgirl, make her male. Call it Batman or something.

I'm excited for this. Joss Whedon has a good sense of balancing darker story elements with charming and engaging characters, which is perfect for a film like Batgirl. Especially if he really is drawing influence from Gail Simone's New 52 run where Barbara was struggling with her Post-Killing Joke PTSD.

However I'm also hoping Joss steps up his game in the visual directing though. That's by far his greatest weakness as a director.

Fantastic curveball.

I never really thought Joss would return to WB after the difficult time he had with Joel Silver on Wonder Woman. I guess Toby Emmerich approached him about doing a Batgirl film, and offered him creative freedom due to his track record with the two Avengers films.

am i the only one who thought simone's run was bad?

her first BoP run was pretty decent, but the batgirl solo wasn't memorable (as well as her 2nd BoP run)

i'm sure this means we'll have 0 chance of killing joke/oracle in the future considering it's whedon and DC themselves have been pushing babs as more solo lately

I thought it was awful. One of the worst parts, if not the absolute worst part, of the New52.

i really do like her as orcale tbh. it's a much more interesting character development, and outside of professor x, there aren't any mainstream wheelchair superheroes (for obvious reasons)

i actually think dc retconning her into being able to walk again is a huge insult to what she represented. but if we still get a killing joke scenario in the future i'm ok with whedon i suppose

BRING IT.
I don't want it to be another scrapped project.

Same could be said for DC's planned Cyborg and Deadshot films. Do they really need to be made? I think it's lazy to have so few female leads on the DCEU, so this should be good for the larger picture. If it really gets made, that is.
