Jurassic World - Part 10

They tend to save February-April for the stuff that's like semi-tentpole like, but not so massive that it NEEDS to break 100 mil the first weekend.

I really think any release date is good as long as there is low competition. Every time a new non-traditional month is chosen to release a blockbuster it murders the previous record. Those records have been used to show that those months can't do big numbers but till recently the biggest films have never released in those months to test the theory.

Even before MOS or JW came out, June was an underrated summer spot... as the studios tended to focus on early May, Memorial Day, and Fourth of July for the big summer guns. Big movies that came out in June were usually sequels (HP3, TF2, TF4), while Pixar usually dominated the month.

I think WB is grateful they booked mid-June 2019 and 2020 for their DC Comics films, because JW made it a prime summer month again. Maybe that's why Universal moved Warcraft from March to the same June weekend for next year -- and not just because it opened two weeks before BVS.

Nikki Rocco deserves a big bonus for scheduling JW in the right spot.

Yeah, I thought JW was a surprisingly big flick for this month. Normally you see a lot of family comedies, lower budget fantasy flicks, or R-rated comedies. Ted 2 is gonna clean up next weekend on that account.

Yeah, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy when you say March is a bad month and never put out movies like Batman or Avengers or whatever in that kind of month. I would like to see them spread the tentpoles out across more months. February needs to have mega release. Same with September/October.
Would be a lot better for cinemagoers too with films spread across the year rather than stacked into a limited number of months. I only have so many times I can go and watch films in summer. If that number happens to be 10 and one of my favourites come out I might watch it 5 times; if 5 films like that come out I'll probably see them once each. The films I've rewatched most, the (lack of) competition has been as much of a factor as the film itself.

It's true although a lot of this is 'what if' guesswork and forecasting. Who knows what JW would have done in another spot. I can't see it doing vastly different numbers unless it was moved to a spot with significant competition out of the gate.

It bothers me that there is seemingly a new big movie every week in the summer. Last year was the worst. Superhero and other big franchise movies piled up on top of each other like crazy. If you happened to enjoy one of them, good luck watching it again the next weekend on a large screen because odds are it was being moved to a much smaller screen to make way for the newest movie.

I saw Batman Begins for the first time a month after it came out. Loved the movie so much I decided to see it in IMAX a few times after that. It was playing in IMAX well over a month after release even though it was not a huge opener at all. The reason for this was that WB was the only studio putting out their movies in IMAX at the time.

If they spread out the tentpole schedule more, it would give all of the big movies more time to play in IMAX, Premium Large Format, etc. and it wouldn't force the audience to go see it a bunch of times in less than a week just so they can experience it on the biggest screens.

Yes, been complaining about this for years. Outside of summer I go months without seeing a film but I'm suddenly required to attend nearly every weekend to keep up in summer when my social calendar is busiest. When the weather is good there are plenty of other things I'd like to do while films would be just as good at other times. And when I do catch something late it gets relegated to the crappy small screens in the multiplex and by that point I may as well just wait another month or 2 and watch it for the first time on my home cinema system. I guess it's very different for students who get summer off and have plenty of days to play with.

I wonder if this will lead to seeing more family horror/action films get the green light. While I never thought we would get a Jaws remake, I could see them playing a light sequel with an all new cast like they did here now.

Jaws is a bit above family horror I'd say, compared to dinosaur movies. For family action does Indy count? If so I'm all for it!

Watched Jaws in the theater yesterday for the first time. It was awesome. Luckily the theater chose a good size screen (40+ feet wide). The digital print and projection was gorgeous. Original blockbuster is still the best blockbuster.

You can make family fun horror flicks so long as the shots don't linger or they cut away. There was a bit of blood in JW, but not so much that kids won't be able to sleep. Though the way you know who died it may give a few people some nightmares.

That was one of the most brutal deaths in the series.

I disagree that Jaws is above the family horror demo. Every kid I knew growing up saw the film. It wasn't rated R so it was easy for parents to let their kids see. I actually loved part 3 growing up strictly cause it was at a theme park. Jurassic always felt like a Jaws successor to me personally.

I definitely had the first lumped into the same blockbuster audience category as Indy, Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Back To The Future.

Oh right. I had assumed Jaws had a higher rating than these films. It doesn't seem like as fun a film for kids even if it's much better than the Jurassic sequels.

Probably not as much, those films are all old so the action and set pieces would need to be updated. But the appeal has always been there with kids and Jaws. Kids like giant sharks and people getting eating. And much like in JW, when people fall in the water that tension automatically goes up and grabs our full attention.

Apart from the action scenes which I'm sure the kids were fascinated by being scared ****less by, the rest of the film is very serious (and probably boring to a kid). While in Jurassic films there are non threatening dinosaurs to fascinate and more of a constant sense of adventure and fun throughout (same goes for Star Wars and Back to the Future). I could be wrong, this is just how I've always seen Jaws and seen those other films. I'd be more worried about taking my kid to see Jaws than the others others despite the gruesome deaths in the others. Different for everyone I guess. :)

I sort of feel bad for Indominus, I mean she was held in a confinement alone because she murdered her only sibling, because of the humans. When she breaks out, of course she wants to kill everything she sees, because she's pissed for being alone and the only one of her kind left which was genetically modified. She knows she's a freak, and she's pissed at the humans for making her like that. The ending of the movie makes it sadder to be surviving so long and triumphing against her enemies only to be killed in a humiliating way for being alone because of the humans.

Jaws was very popular around the schoolyard when I was growing up.

So was the first two Alien movies.

Oh another significant upgrade. Thought Father's Day would lead to underestimates, plus this film has good Saturdays and Sundays. It's beating Avengers on weekends which is crazy for June and obviously smashing it on weekdays. Could finish above Titanic's $658.67m domestic at this rate.

So would you say it's a lock to finish above Avengers' $623m domestic?

Oh I'm sure they are bored with the film during the talking parts as they are plenty of other films as well. I'm just going from my own youth and what happens at Universal studios. Kids like the shark and underwater stuff, maybe not as much as dinos but it grabs their interest. It was definitely very popular with all ages like Jurassic was. But yeah, we all look at films differently.

Yeah, Aliens was huge too. Still can't believe how much they would market R movies to kids back then. Pretty rad haha.

:up:It's tough to beat, thats for sure.

I guess Alien and Aliens even more so were really popular when I was growing up. Same goes for Terminator and Predator and other films we weren't supposed to be allowed to see lol. But again the interim bits outside of the action in those were what I thought would be more interesting to a kid having a sci-fi sort of basis and general adventure rather than a bunch of scientists mucking around in boring locations. :woot:

Universal just reported the weekend actual at $106,588,440. That puts the 10-day total at $402.78m. Amazing stuff.

I loved seeing all the sharks at Sea World when I was 5. I would stay in there for ages watching them.

Always good to learn of other people's experiences with these things. And the conversation has reminded me how other actual R / 18 rated films were hugely popular with kids who weren't anywhere near old enough to being allowed to see them. :woot:

Wow, blew past expectations again. The Avengers' 2nd weekend record I thought would be a really tough record to break at the time it was set, even more so than the opening weekend record due to how well it had held for a film of its size.
