Jurassic World - Part 10

Reminds me of the picture George Lucas sent to Cameron after Titanic conquered the box office.

It also serves as an amusing reminder that people who have vested financial interests in these films and are actual competitors are more cordial and friendly about it then basement dwelling, pouty manchildren (and womenchildren) who project their childish fanboy wars onto these people.

Should've been Pratt riding the Indominus Rex with Blue in tow. But I love that pic nonetheless.

I love the piece for the Gyrosphere sequence in particular, the Steg needs a bigger role in the next movie. :D
Yes that was one of my favourite parts of the film. Really cool to see Ankylosaurus get some action. I'd have liked to see how it or Stegosaurus, Triceratops or a sauropod would get on against a smaller carnosaur. Maybe have multiple herbivores against a carnosaur if necessary. Let them win one for a change. :woot:

So I finally got a chance to see this film today. Having watched the first Jurassic Park film in the cinema only two years ago really hits home just how much every follow up film in the series has failed to capture what made that film so good, and sadly Jurassic World follows in those footsteps. To be very blunt, this is a B-Grade movie with a $200 million budget, filled with one dimensional characters, few genuine scares and some inadvertent laugh out loud moments.

First, this film does so much to remind you of the first film yet fails to understand what made that film great, it was essentially a horror film at its heart, it built up tension and wasn't afraid to toy with your mind. This one is a monster movie, which is fine, however there's nothing really done with that concept that we haven't already seen before. No suspense, no memorable scenes, no build up to anything, nothing even remotely terrifying, just more of the same but with a new dinosaur. Worst of all there's unintentional humour in this one.

The characters in this film are terrible. And not just terrible, completely incompetent to the point where you wonder just how they managed to keep this Park incident free for so long. I've never wanted to see so many people be eaten before in my life given half the dumb choices they made. I half expected some of the characters to inadvertently make themselves more delicious prior to being eaten by falling into a hot dog stand and covering themselves in mustard and barbecue sauce. The original film might not have had much of a plot but the characters were interesting and well developed, and at the very least they showed some brains. The only remotely smart one in this film is Pratt's character, but that seems to come more from default than anything else. Everyone else are cardboard cut outs, what their names are I couldn't honestly tell you.

As for the dinosaurs, they are about the only real highlight of the movie. Frankensaurus is a glorified T-Rex. I never liked the concept from the beginning of a genetically engineered dinosaur and nothing in this film seemed to justify that other than it meant T-Rex gets to be the hero. The Raptors I wasn't a fan of, that species has always been the most terrifying in the series and whilst they didn't go so far as to train them the danger they've always possessed was greatly diminished. In all honesty I was open to the idea of controlled raptors but the nonsense with the military really was bordering on jumping the shark.

Despite all of this though, I actually had fun with the film because at the end of the day it's a B-grade SyFy channel movie disguised as a Hollywood blockbuster, and for the rest of my life I'm going to make fun of it. A glorified straight to DVD rental that you watch when you need a quick laugh or plastered with alcohol. Possibly the most hilarious thing that was said in this film was by the military dude when his team was evacuating the embryos out as the park - 'Someone has to keep Ingen profitable', this despite the fact a several billion dollar class action lawsuit is coming the company's way. That just summed up the logic behind this film, and I wouldn't have it any other way because I've come to accept nothing is going to ever match the original film because the concept doesn't lend itself to genuine continuation, so just do what ever bat **** crazy stuff you want from here on in. If it's as nutty as this one I'll probably enjoy it.

An unintentionally hilarious 6/10.

I wouldn't go that far with some of your criticism if the film being a SyFy straight to DVD Fflick but overall I agree with your other points .

Awesome!

It'll hit $300M domestic before Friday if the numbers hold up tomorrow through Thursday.

So 400 million domestic is going to happy for sure with the movie making as much has it has in a short time but what about 500 million do you think it can get to that?

I love that Thor is puzzled with disbelief that the T-rex wield the Hammer Mjölnir (displaying Worthiness lol), and Hulk is annoyed lol

So I gave some quike thoughts a few pages back after seeing the movie last night and no one responded to what I said but I may see it again but in IMAX on sat. This movie needs to be seen twice. If I where to rate the Jurassic movies I would probly go something like this.

1. Jurassic park-10
2. Jurassic world- 8.8
3. Jurassic park the lost world-7
4. Jurassic park 3- 4

If it only drops 50% in its second weekend, like The Avengers, $500 million is guaranteed.

So, how much do we see of the
old visitor's center
?

I have similar ratings. I think JW is more fun than 'good' (as fun as JP for me) while JP the fun but a lot more of the good. TLW loses it at the end but otherwise I enjoy watching it, especially for the Postlethwaite stuff and early scenes. JPIII is a joke, but I can still get enjoyment out of it. Those 2 other sequels gave us good looks at Compsognathus and Spinosaurus as well as a good number of other herbivores. Definitely have a place in any Jurassic run I do.

If it only drops 50% I think it'll beat Avengers. Going to be making more on weekdays (already over $6m more just from Monday) so Avengers needs to do more on the remaining weekends to beat it.

I don't think it matters if it beats the first Avengers overall, it's going to most likely make over 500mil. It's a massive hit.

It's going to have a bigger second weekend drop than the first Avengers I believe and that's fine as well.

I do really feel that we as an audience have become increasingly jaded and harder to entertain. I enjoyed the bits of meta-commentary on that, but I also like that the movie didn't get lost up its own butt with the commentary and remembered to just be an entertaining thrill-ride. It was a nice balance. And I can't help but feel that the some of the reception to this movie is a result of that jadedness. Movie fans on the whole are much more hypercritical about movies now than they were 20 years ago, it's just the way it is. A lot of blockbuster movies, including the original Jurassic Park would not hold up to the level of scrutiny that gets thrown at modern blockbusters.

Eh, I don't know if I completely agree with that notion. It might be true to a certain extent, mainly because many of today's movies are variations or continuations of the same concepts we've seen time and time again. This makes some movies seem unoriginal and unimpressive, because we've "been there and done that" before, even if they are technically solid films.

The reaction to certain films can (and should) hinge on the time they were released, what they presented to audiences, the impact the film had on audiences along with cinema as a whole, and some classics like JP represent a "perfect storm" of factors coming together. Would Jurassic Park get picked apart more if it were released today instead of 20 years ago? Probably, but based on the nature of today's cinema, they probably wouldn't have produced a movie that closely resembles what we know as Jurassic Park.

With JP, you had a director in the prime of his filmmaking era, a strong cast that elevated the characters as they were written, the perfect blend of practical and digital effects that pushed the boundaries of what people knew to be possible then, an incredible musical score, and of course, the benefit of presenting audiences with a concept they had never seen before. Furthermore and for all these reasons, it was a great film that influenced many of the blockbusters that followed it and was undeserving of harsh criticism or discontent.

Another important thing to consider is that while it might seem like movie fans are now more jaded, overly critical, and harder to please than before is that there now exists an outlet (the Internet) where people like us (or anyone) can publicly voice their opinions on any and all movies that are released or have been released in the past, whether it be through any of the social media platforms or community forums like this one. Today, anyone has the opportunity to be a "critic", whereas that opportunity didn't exist in the past.

People walking out of The Lost World or Speed 2: Cruise Control might have been able to talk to their friends or family about how/why they thought the movie sucked and wasn't as good as the original. They were able to pick it apart with their work colleagues the next day or could discuss it over the phone while having a conversation with someone, but they couldn't get online and write a post that expressed their thoughts to their hundreds or thousands of Facebook friends and Twitter followers. They couldn't make a Youtube video to mock the movie and rip it to shreds. They couldn't find hundreds of critic's reviews from every media outlet in the country collected in one place that was available for them to view with one click of the mouse.

I do think it's harder to produce a blockbuster today that is widely considered to be good or great, mainly because (as I said) so many more movies are released yearly now, we've already seen just about every kind of movie you can think of, expectations are higher than they used to be thanks to the way movies are anticipated and reported on, and it's harder for movies to be "fresh" or innovative.

But with that said, I think the same general rules apply. Audiences appreciate and respond to tightly wound stories, great characters and actors, exciting visuals, and films that either present us with new concepts or take existing concepts and turn them on their heads. Films like The Dark Knight, Inception, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Gravity, The Departed, (500) Days of Summer, District 9, Knocked Up, Little Miss Sunshine, Casino Royale, Pixar's Up, and Avatar are recent films that I feel are good examples of this.

Is that first avengers movie or AOU that had a 50% drop?

Avengers dropped 50%, Ultron dropped 59%. Considering that JW unseated TDK for #4 on highest non-opening Mondays, it's an absolute I-Rex at the box office now.

It's going to take a chunk of Inside Out, which will open at #2.
