Just bought a DS

Yeah, I loved them. I used to play them when I finished my work in my high school programming class.

Well, in fairness, they had the first two GTA games for the PC to build on. That's all Chinatown Wars is: an expansion of the top-down gameplay they refined in those first two GTA games, which was incredibly fun despite being technologically unimpressive by today's standards.

The sheer size of the Liberty City they managed to pack into one DS cart is still very impressive though, but you're right they did derive a lot of the gameplay mechanics from the previous GTA models. Of course Chinatown Wars also benefits from the newer gameplay models of GTA3 and 4, and everything in between, so it's kind of like a hybrid. Perfect for portable play.

Got my DS a few days ago, been enjoying Hotel Dusk and reenjoying The World Ends With You.

I have just 2 questions though.

1) Is there anyway to set it to where instead of just starting the game as soon as you start the system it goes to the system with Pictochat and choosing your game?

2) What is this DS download play thing? I click on it and it just sits there doing nothing saying it's scanning for software or something, but nothing ever happens?

The instruction manual didn't come with the box, I bought it from eBay, so go figure

1) Yeah, there's a setting in the menu if you start the DS up without any cartridge. I can't remember exactly which menu off the top of my head, though.

2) No idea, my DS does the same.

the DSi is new territory for me, I'm runnin on the DS lite (love that GBA cartridge still), so I don't know man

The DSi doesn't appeal to me at all. It's got a bunch of features I already have in portable form on my iPod and it takes away GBA compatibility. No thanks.

I like the new menu and software on the DSi, but the camera seems unnecessary and I still play a few of my GBA games. I like that you can download games on the DSi, but so far as I can tell they're all games that require the camera, gimmicky type games. Now if they made the downloadable games for the DSi GBA games, then I'd be interested. That's where the PSP shines IMO. Gettin to play my old PS1 games wherever I want

^The "DS download play" works if somebody is within a close radius playing a game that has the "DS download play" feature. It's basically how you'd play multiplayer if only one person had the game cart. So you click that if someone has, say, Mario Kart DS and you feed off of their cart.

Ah, ok, I see. I was thinking it was like a download service or something like that. I knew the DSi could do that, but I thought maybe this meant the DS Lite could as well.

I don't care much for the idea of DSi, but I like the idea of the DSiWare store that they have. The main reason I picked the DS Lite instead was because I could find it way cheaper on eBay than the DSi. I probably would have even if I was going retail simply because of GBA support

I got the DS Lite because of GBA support. I mean, how can you go wrong? A DS Lite costs $50 less than a DSi and has a GBA slot. Seems strange to me to go w/ a DSi unless you really need the camera or don't play even a single GBA game.

My thoughts exactly. I don't need the DSi's new features, plus the Lite is cheaper and plays GBA games, some of which look cool.

Yeah, there are some great GBA games (SNES classics) that you can pick up for very cheap nowadays and play on the DS Lite. I recently picked up Donkey Kong Country, Metroid, Super Mario Bros. 3, F-Zero, and Zelda: Link to the Past all for under $30.

They are making DSiWare games. Though it will probably be awhile before there's something big in that.

^Wouldn't be surprised if there is a "wait-and-see" mindset regarding downloadable/online game purchases because the PSP Go will be using that. If it's successful, I can see Nintendo implementing the same concept with a bit more conviction.

I don't think it's really the same. The DSiWare store will mostly be original titles from my understanding and mostly be 'indie', experimentally or titles that just don't have enough 'meat' for a full retail version. With the PSP it's going to mostly be digital versions of games that will still be available on UMD or will be at some point or where previously

I'd buy that PSP Go thing because I don't really use the UMD games. All the games I play are downloaded from the PSN

If that's really all you're going to use it for, I really doubt it'll be worth paying for the upgrade. Just buy a bigger memory card for your current PSP model, I hear there not all that expensive anymore

That's subjective, but I agree it's not worth the money to upgrade if you are only going to be using for PSN PS1 re-releases

Oh, lol. Well, honestly, if I get a PSP down the road I could see myself picking up a Go!. I'm not a huge fan of the pure digital distribution route, to be completely honest, but the convenience for a handheld would be very helpful I think. Especially on trips and stuff like that.
