I was watching this again on DVD yesterday, and while I still loved all the epic set pieces, metaphors, Routh, iconic shots and etc., it suddenly hit me only now just how terrific Kevin Spacey was as Lex Luthor.

I think it didn't hit me as hard the first time because it is Spacey, so you automatically know it's going to be a good performance and don't really read into it... but Spacey did create a really interesting character with this Lex, just through his physical mannerisms alone.

The looks in his eyes while he made long pauses after someone made a question, the slowly done smirks to the side, the pent up anger that finally breaks loose towards the end... classic Spacey, and great casting.

He was good as Lex..unfortunately the material they gave him to work with overall was only a rehash of the Lex Gene Hackman portrayed. If they based the character on the Lex in "Smallville" and "Justice League" shows - it would've probably been the best on-screen portrayal of Lex Luthor ever.

are there more clips from the dvd?

If someone had made a similar useless thread about how bad they thought Spacey was, they would be villified.

Aren't there enough threads already that could have handled an opinion about Spacey? The most useless and uninspiring Luthor portrayal in the Superman lexicon.

I agree, all of these threads need to be condensed into one thread, or put in an existing thread. Everytime the movie is watched there shouldn't be another "I Love Kitty's Dog Thread." or "Jason Should Cut His Hair In The Sequel" Not that I don't want to hear people's opinions, but it just clutters up the boards. Just my opinion.

how bout an "I love Kitty" thread......or a "Richard was more Super than Superman" thread......or a "Why did teh cute doggy eat teh other cute doggy" thread.....

that being said......Spacey's Lex WAS one of the highlights of the film.....

I think we have a thread on her already, believe it or not?

or a "Richard was more Super than Superman" thread......
That topic actually has a few threads devoted to it.

'Cause it was funny. Duh! LOL :D

Figures. Something I liked about the film, supporters seem to loathe.

"Weren't there two of those?"

Gah! :(

Oh well...

Spacey's Lex was an awesome portrayal IMO, during the first two acts he was a bit goofy and fun but towards the end of the 2nd act and definately throughout the 3rd act he turned into a totally sinister character that was NOTHING like Hackman's Lex IMO.

Spacey can easily be menacing and amusing and good and evil and mysterious and calculative and winner and loser and hater and lover and friendly and dangerous... ALL AT ONCE!!!!!!
As it concerns Hackman, well... nice try.

the problem with Hackman and Spacey's Lex is that everyone is thinking about how post-crisis Lex would be better, but they're just not giving them a chance.

I think Spacey's Lex will work better with another villain. His Lex would be better in just a little less screen time. I felt in SR it wasn't the portrayl that was off at times, it was that we maybe saw just a slight bit too much Lex. We needed a little more Clark time, less Lex time.

I'm thinking for the sequel some of the load will be lifted with Brainiac sharing the villain role. Also if Lex indeed does gain some political power opening up Lexcorp, he will be able to portray more of a charistmatic manipulation. That will make Spacey as Lex complete imo solidifying him as the best representation sense John Shea.

I think in the sequel Lex will remain exactly as he was throughout the third act were he was a viscious bastard. I wouldnt say there was too much of him in SR though, i thought his scene's were great.

i thought there was waaaay to much of him in SR, and I found him no where near as good as hackman, except on nk

i agree that there was to much of lex in the movie.

I didnt think it was too much Lex per se, just not enough Superman to go with it.

Kevin Spacey was great as Gene Hackman. Maybe next time they could have him play Lex Luthor...

i gotta say that Spacey's performance is the worst among the main actors. so fake and pretentious. i think he did a bad job.

Gotta totally disagree with this, i thought he was great. The looks he'd give when someone would ask him a question were simply fantastic, and i loved his totally sinister side in act 3.
