Kenneth Branagh to direct Thor

Hi gang,

As a Norwegian I am really looking forward to this movie. It's basically inspired by stuff from my backyard! And Kenneth Branagh is a director who can think outside the box, if given free reigns. I havent looked much into his plans yet - if they are available, please tell me - but I hope he'll make the movie a bit like Outlander, Pathfinder or The 13th Warrior. In other words, darker and more dirtier than most comic book adaptions. I dont recall when Thor was announced but I promoted the idea of Norse fantasy in an essay in February and it looks like my preyers were heard :-)

Fans boys including myself would be in outrage if Thor's custom is anything close to the made for tv movie Return of Incredible Hulk. Which was pretty close to the Outlander which was a great movie by the way.

Thor's costume was horrible in that Hulk TV-movie. But I would like to see some fur included in the design. Maybe just a little fur trim at the top of the cape. Fur is very evocative of Norse stuff to me.

A bit of fur would certainly work. I doubt they will give him a realistic appearance, though. I fear he might be just another sleek, soapy, bodybuiler-type superhero. Are any script details out yet? Will it be a contemporary setting, or a Viking setting? I've not read the comic books, actually. I do recall that Thor met the Hulk once, in a Hulk comic. If they do Thor in present day, I hope it will be better than Dolph Lundgren's Masters of the Universe which lost all that was fun about it when they jumped from their world to our world.

A full script leaked a while ago that featured a primarily Viking-esque setting, with most of the action taking place in Asgard. Branagh and some others have been rewriting the script over the last few months, though, so we don't really know anything about what the movie will be like now.

Personally, I hope the all-Asgard setting remains in the finished film. Asgard's a rich, vibrant world filled with all kinds of awesome stuff, so ditching it in favor of Thor hanging out in the "real" world would be a misstep to me.

I certainly hope you are right! I found an MTV page from January this year which mentioned some leaks; "...in the current draft of the script, “Thor” will still take place in an ancient land of Norse Gods, but will eventually lead to modern times, where Blake finds Mjolnir, subsequently transforming the partially disabled American physician into the titular superhero." I think they have better chances if they keep Thor entirely in Asgard. Should make a better story that way.

I hope I really really hope that Thor take place in Asgard there is such a rich history. I really hope I get to see all the wonderful scenery that Asgard has to offer. BTW a little fur is okay but going to far left of the comic is not good in my eyes. I know people may think comic book costumes are a little ridiculous and they'd like realism but I like them its part of the experience when you read them. I also really like Thor's current costume its very cool guess you can throw a little fur on that.

None of the costumes I have seen make any sense if Thor is supposed to be of Viking origin or a god in Asgard (in the movie). Tight spandex suits have nothing to do with Asgard or Vikings, and beside that they are not practical in a cold environment. Of course, I am completely ignoring the comic book universe now. However, if a movie should be "realistic" (it does not need to be an accurate adapation as the ones Zack Snyder likes to make) there is no room for tight suits or bare arms. To me, a comic book is that and a movie is a movie, and I actually prefer movies to be as much as they can be, and leave the comic book looks to the comics. I'd much rather see Thor if the story and concept is taken into a "realistic" Asgard environment.

But, again, that's only the Viking movie gene in me speaking :woot:

Well, I disagree with you there. This isn't just a movie about the mythological Thor. It's about Marvel's Thor, who is a comic book hero and should have that reflected to some extent in the movie. Granted, I don't want spandex either, but I don't think we should leave the costume's design entirely out. The best costume for me would be something that's practical but still evokes the comic version's look.

I think the costume will depend on how much Marvel gets to say. I am not sure I am a big fan of movies that look exactly like the comics, because that will only be the comic book in a screen version, and not a movie on its own. We know that reboots in comics sometimes take liberties, and that could happen with this movie too (and frankly, I hope for it - it surely will make the movie more marketable outside the comic book geek circle).

I don't think there'd be anything wrong with this look in the movie:

There would be absolutely nothing wrong if they went with his current Costume which is by far my Favorite Costume of Thors ;)

You would think so but I was approached by a Sweed who wanted to work with me on a video game about Thor. He found this costume to be too knightly and not viking enough.

It does evoke medieval knight more than viking warrior. I like it regardless, but the design clearly borrows heavily from the medieval era--leather tunic/jerkin, scalemail, lots of straps, etc.

Branagh did a press conference about Wallander and talked about Thor some. He talks about the scope a bit about 7 minutes into the second part, for the first minute or so in the fourth part he talks about the universe, and for the first minute or so of the fifth part he talks about Hiddleston and says that he currently doesn't plan to act in the movie.

On another note, Branagh was great in Wallander. He deserves the Emmy he's nominated for.

Branagh seems like a real cool guy who knows what he's doing. I was always reluctant about Thor, but he's definitely already sold me on it. It's apparent they're working hard.

I watched the first episode/movie and found it so depressing that I haven't brought myself to watch the other two yet. It's like Branagh and/or the writer of the Wallander books deliberately set out to crush your soul with the tone of the stories.

They all three have the exact same soul-crushing tone. The second one is even more depressing than the first, believe it or not.

Geez. I mean, the first one starts with an immolation, so I knew it wouldn't be a walk in the park, but it somehow got more bleak from there. Wallander's life f***ing sucks, the case f***ing sucks, that daughter chick from the rich family was a snotty *****e making Wallander's life even more difficult, Wallander's relationship with his father may be too far gone to fix... just, ugh. :csad:
