Kenneth Branagh has reportedly opted not to return to direct Thor 2 for Marvel and Disney despite the commercial success of the first Thor.

Deadline claims Branagh's split with the studios was "mutual and amicable," and that he'll probably involved with the sequel in some creative capacity. This obviously means the director's chair is now open, so expect the rumor mill to start churning out names soon.

Marvel has scheduled Thor 2 for a July 26, 2013 release and that Chris Hemsworth, who is also playing Thor in the now-filming Avengers movie, is set to reprise the role again for Thor 2. Iron Man 3 is also slated for a summer 2013 bow.
At least he'll still be on as creative.

EDIT:
Heh...I didn't realize it was in the other Thor forum.

Gutted Branagh isn't returning.g. I hope they make good considerations for replacement and don't just give it to the first director who wants it!

I hope they go with someone with the same caliber... Man, the reason the movie worked as well as it did, I think had to do with his directing. So, it's going to be interesting to see how another director handles it. But, I have faith in Marvel. The directors they've got for their movies up until now has been great.

Louis Leterrier ....great.

I have a bad feeling about this. The weakest thing about Thor was its screenplay. So, that guy's back and Branagh left? I know it was amicable, but beyond just its cast, what made Hulk so enjoyably charming was how Branagh directed them and brought both grandeur and sly wit to the proceedings. I have a feeling another Iron Man 2 may be released.

New director- Good!
Awful writer- Bad!

I don't see why a lot of people are complaining about Don Payne coming back for another round. It'll be pretty obvious once he's finished and do some rewrites for the new director, Disney and Marvel will bring in another writing team (possibly Stentz and Miller again).

I'm sure Marvel and Disney will get a capable director. They'll probably dip into the well of directors they've worked with before first. If Avengers takes off next year, I'd be stoked if Joss Whedon got the gig.

Mike Newell would be great. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire/Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time/Donnie Brasco. He can cover all angles while transitioning across the nine realms.

While I consider Branagh to be a great director, I think Thor worked the way it did because of the style Marvel has achieved. Not that Branagh has no merit in it but Thor wasn't a 'Branagh movie' but a 'Marvel movie directed by Branagh.' And I suspect that's why he's not returning in spite of the financial success. Not that he hated the experience, not at all. But I assume he's after more personal projects and he knows that a sequel would be too much of a similar experience to directing the first one.
