Kevin Williamson's 'The Following'

Criminal Minds is a procedural like CSI in that they chase criminals, but the stoiries are much darker than CSI. Rapists, sadistic serial killers, child killers and molesters etc are much more brutal than anything you will find on CSI and its presented in a darker way. And they delve into the mind of the killer, and pretty much obssess over it. Its just too disturbing for me, and not what I want from entertainment. It's almost like the show takes pleasure in the sick.

Ah I see, doesn't sound like my type of thing either, the odd case here and there but a whole show focused on that side of things would put me off.

You think Criminal Minds is bad try watching BBC Show Waking The Dead. It was one of the darkest shows I've ever seen. Violent rapists who toss a child witnesses off a bridge, serial killers who kidnap torture and molest homeless kids, a mother who has an obsession compulsion for the limelight so bad she made a kid get cancer, the main detective had an anger managent problems that lead him to beat almost half the suspects to death and that is just the tame stuff I can post on here. The show was border line horror movie style at times.

Only TV show that left you feeling depressed after watching it.

How do you make someone get cancer?

I was going into this show with a bit of caution due to all the pre-release hype the show was getting, but having watched it, I got to say it's not half -bad. Granted, much of the plot was a bit telegraphed and I do think it could've had a longer running time, but overall the acting was pretty decent, had some pretty effective jump-shares (seriously, the scene where [blackout]the dog moved[/blackout] literally made me go "oh s***!") and I loved the last 5 or so minutes; just like Kevin Williamson did in Scream, he created another instance of meta-textualism that worked with in the context of the plot, and I like the idea of
the author-turned-serial killer is essentially trying to create a real-life suspense thriller and deliberately casting Kevin Bacon's character as "the protagonist" to his "story."
Should be an interesting show, especially if it plays with and subverts a lot more "police procedural" genre conventions

I'm hooked on The Following. Any hints about what's next? — Jacob
ADAM: Next week's episode spends a lot of time establishing the nanny-and-gay-neighbors trio at the center of Joe Carroll's following —and you'll quickly learn that Carroll's not training killers, but rather simply enabling them. Look for a very odd little love triangle to form between the group as they guard Carroll's son. Plus: Prepare yourself now for the creepiest shower scene since Psycho, even though not a drop of blood is spilled!

And me and my wife are in...

We both loved the first ep. My wife's also a connoisseur of psycho/murder stories with her Patricia Cornwell books.

Not a bad pilot thanks to K Bacon and J Purefoy.
One thing that I found ridiculous is that the prison staff let Joe computer plugged to the Internet ( even with security access it's a bit clueless ).
I wasn't expecting the nurse to be killed, "good" surprise.

What can I say it was a weird show. The main detective Boyd was as crazy as the criminals he went after.

Here is a clip in which Stephen Moyer (Vampire Bill from True Blood) is almost drowned when Boyd tries to get a confession out of him.

This was a great show. My only fears is that this show some how turns out like Awake where a good show is canceled because the networks don't know what to do with it. However I do think this show would have been benefited more if it had been on FX or HBO,MAX,Star, or Showtime. It just would give the show more freedom.

I'm going to guess that much later on they'll reveal either the female agent or Iceman to be part of Carroll's cult. :o

The female agent gets written out after the pilot. We get a new female agent next week that is an expert on cults. And in a preview, it showed [blackout]her handing Carroll a book of Poe, while he had a strange look on his face[/blackout]. Make of that what you will.

Your wife is braver than me, just the synopsis of her books creep me out. :(

The mother has Munchausen syndrome by proxy, she exposed her kid to radiation on purpose.

I'm not gonna even ask how she got access to radiation.

Really enjoyed the pilot, will definitely continue to watch.

Well, her being a nurse who wishes she was able to go to medical school, it's really the highly detailed medical forensics in the Cornwell books that pulled her in initially. The suspense/thriller/mystery kept her afterwards.

One of the reasons why one of her favorite shows is Body of Proof on ABC.

I don't quite understand the complaints about the supporting cast. Given the high concept and that Hardy and Caroll are the stars, how much development did you expect the side characters to get in a one-hour pilot?

People will find any reason to complain.

‘The Following’ Gets Killer Ratings On Sky Atlantic
Kevin Bacon serial killer drama The Following had a solid debut on Fox in the U.S. on Monday and on Tuesday premiered on UK pay channel Sky Atlantic. In the 10PM-11PM slot, the violent horror thriller drew an average of 270,000 viewers for a 1.4% share. The numbers may not sound earth-shattering but they were more than 636% higher than the slot average over the past three months, The Guardian reported. Meanwhile, the premiere of Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes’ reality show about English manses, Great Houses With Julian Fellowes, drew 2.2M viewers on ITV at 9PM for an 8.8% share on Tuesday.

If The Following wasn't on Sky Atlantic it would get higher ratings in the UK.

This was awful. I was really holding out hope for this because Bacon and especially Purefoy are gods among men, but not even they could save it. The one decent scene was their back and forth at the end, but that was only because it was two fantastic leads doing their thing without all the other crap to muck it up.

Worst thing about the show is probably the editing, I can't even begin to count how many times I thought Bacon might be doing something interesting only to have the camera cut away or do something akward and amaturish.

I'll wait a few weeks and then power through the first four episodes all at once to see if anything improves, but at the moment count me as severely dissappointed.

Loved it, I'm a follower.

Me, too. I've watched it twice already. :D

Fox’s ‘Following’ Gets DVR Boost In Live+3
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Fox viewed DVR play so important for new midseason drama The Following, it ran “Set Your DVR!’ ads for the show as part of the launch campaign, the first time anyone had done that. Many viewers did put the Kevin Bacon serial killer drama on their DVRs, and in Live +3, The Following’s Monday premiere rose to a 4.3/10 among adults 18-49, up +34% from its L+SD rating (3.2). The Following remains the second-highest rated drama debut of the season behind NBC’s Revolution (5.4/15 in Live+3, 33% gain vs. L+SD), just ahead of CBS’ Elementary (4.2/12). It also edged Fox’s cancelled 2011-12 dramas Terra Nova (4.1 in the L+3) and Alcatraz (4.0).

I wasn't blown away by the pilot, largely due to being disappointed that I was able to see the twists coming (not something I'm usually any good at). BUT I like the concept quite a bit, and I LOVE Purefoy, so I'll stick with it for the coming weeks at least.

I agree that some stuff was predictable but I don't really care. Just like with Avatar, the actors are doing such a great job I don't mind knowing that some stuff is going to happen anyways. :)

Fortunately the networks dont give a **** what you think, or over 100,000 of the fans that tuned in.

I want more.
