Kids

I said my wife was 41 and that I would be 40 next year. Please tell me you're not proof-reading bills for the Senate.

You'll be 41 nineteen years before I'll be 41, that's all that matters old man

jag is like Duke Phillips from The Critic....never aging.

jag probably has some of that "old man" strength though....your muscles are just solid from years of living....my uncle, even when he passed at 78, had an iron grip

So my wife wants to have a child. It's pretty much the only thing she wants out of life, and always has been. Her clock is ticking, and she talks about it more and more often.

Now, I'm just curious...what do you all think is the ideal time to have a child. I know, I know, it's never "ideal"...

I'm not the type to "plan" life, beyond the most important elements. I don't know that there's a "right" time to have children, but I do believe that people should be ready for such things on some level. It's not that I'm afraid a kid would take over my life, or anything like that. I just want to be prepared, and don't think I am yet. Could I handle it? Sure, but I wonder if my current mindset about life and career is such that it would be good for a child. Is it the kind of thing you want to be "ready" for? Or should it just "happen"?

I feel it should be planned. I've known many that became parents having never planned it out, and the natural turmoil of having a child got notched up from 10 to 13 for them. Being "blessed" with multiples or lacking the right mindset are amongst the stresses that parenthood opens you up to. People imagine that kids are born perfectly, too, so another harsh reality is what happens when they're not. There are all sorts of things you need to sort out before you put a bun in the oven.

I can't say if you're the right age. I've seen people at all ages who should have used a condom because they're so irresponsible it's a shame they were allowed to have kids in the first place. I can say, though, that my parents were around you and your wife's respective ages when they first tried for a child. They didn't conceive me until their mid-30's, but I figure they were still ready for a child before that point. If you can say "I'm okay with my night life and youthful romps coming to a close and I know what I'm trading that in for," you might be ready.

Hey, I've got years of weight training to give me that. I don't need no old man strength. Yet. :o

my best friend and her GF want to have a kid within the next 2 or 3 years...they are thinking of going the sperm donor route

Just make sure that she is a normal, mentally stable woman and mature as all hell otherwise the second your seed hits she will write you out of the picture, paint you as the bad guy and change every single rule as long as it plays to her advantage.

No, Im not angry or bitter...no, not at all.......

Kids are a lot of hard work and commitment. Not to be taken lightly. My wife and I had 3 kids in 4 years. WE WERE NOT READY FOR ANY OF THEM!! But it was all worth it. We wanted kids just not when we got them. We were together for about 3 years and she did not get pregnant. We figured we may get checked out. About a week after that conversation we found out she was pregnant. We had a beautiful baby girl. 3 months later, you heard me 3 months later she was pregnant AGAIN!! We had 2 beautiful baby girls in 11 months and 3 weeks. Then my wife started birth control. It worked for a couple of years then we learned she was pregnant yet again. While on birth control! So we now have 2 beautiful girls and a handsome little boy. THEY ARE A LOT OF WORK!! But worth it all. No matter if you are ready or not, if you bring a child into the world you better be ready to take care of that child! BTW my wife now has her tubes tied so we'll see how long that lasts.
