Kiersey Clemons IS Iris West

Not sure I get what you mean by this. I don't find it to be insulting either way, but I do think it's stupid to follow what was done in a CW TV show in the last few years, instead of sticking to the depiction of the character that was consistent for sixty years in the comics. I find it even sillier in comparison with their decision to stick with white Mera, while racebending her would make a perfect sense for DCEU, and racebend Iris, where it's not really needed. I think it should have been other way around.

I see... thanks.

And I was aware that term "reboot" was inadequate for Rebirth, I was using it loosely as it's pretty much just semantics to me at this point. A matter of fact, Rebirth is even more complicated to wrap head around than any reboot would be.

If you don't mind being spoiled it's really not as complicated as it seems. Pre52 Superman in Rebirth is really the only complicated part, I got up to speed quick.

If you're a Supes fan in particular you should give Rebirth a shot. His comics haven't been this good since the 80's.

Totally agreed. I'm still kind of surprised they chose Heard for the role of Mera, but maybe it was because they already racebended Arthur(sort of) so they probably thought his love interest didn't need to be a poc as well. But with Iris it is surprising indeed. Perhaps that CW show gave The Flash and his supporting cast a lot of visibility and they decided to play it safe with a non-white Iris, instead of facing a potential backlash for not being as "progressive" as the show is. Personally I think they already did that with casting Miller as Barry, who is a Jewish actor and clearly doesn't resemble comic Barry, but WB probably just didn't want the risk of getting bad press. I'm beyond tired of everyone getting offended about ****.

Yeah, it's beyond transparent. Which they kind of shot themselves in the foot with, because they must be idiots to think people can't see through what they are doing.

It is pretty obvious, for sure.

Though I think there's one thing that should be accounted for, if we're to be fair, and that's the fact that director of Flash worked with this actress previously, so she wasn't just pulled out of nowhere.

I don't mind it in a least. I'm not that much of a Supes fan, but I definitely prefer the pre-New 52 Supes to the doormat of a character from New 52, so his return is good news.

I'm a bit on the break from mainstream comics (actually, comics in their entirety as of late), but there's always a possibility I'll return to DC's runs at some point.

It was definitely because of the preconceived notion most people have of Iris from CW and WB wants to avoid bad PR from people/general audience that don't know or care about the comics. So whatever.

True. I did plan to eventually watch Dope anyway, but with this news I would definitely speed up the process.

Racebending all Atlanteans and making the film with majority of actors being of darker skin, and not just black, but Maori, Native American (I'd really like to see Wes Studi as Vulko), etc. is what I'd go for. I guess it would take balls to do so in Hollywood, but if they want to play in that field what a better way to go for it than this? That would certainly get much more respect from me than these spoonful poc castings when they find it convenient to do so.

And regarding the bolded part, yeah, I'm pretty sure this is the case. Though, again, there's also a thing that Clemons fit the age they were going for and Famuyiwa worked with her before. So, I'm not sure I could call this casting as forced, as I would otherwise be inclined to do.

I'll be the first to admit, when I think of Iris my mind automatically goes to the CW version, so (re)adjusting to a white Iris would've been odd for me initially, so for those who may not even know she was white in the comics, and are only fans due to the show, I can definitely see why they'd want to keep her black.

I could see that

Well they were gonna use John Stewart Green Lantern in that Justice League movie some time ago. Probably do to JL/JLU being people's primary knowledge of Green Lantern

Well, it's 2016 not 2003 and given how much exposure Hal has had in other media for the past 7-8 years, I wouldn't say everyone thinks of John Stewart or JLU when they think of Green Lantern anymore. But yeah, George Miller's Justice League was riding on the popularity of the cartoon at the time, that's why GL in the movie was going to be John and Flash would've been Wally.

Or they don't thing that the general public, which makes up the majority of people who will see this movie, will put as much thought into it as the hardcore fans online, or even care.

And they're probably right about that. So no, they haven't "shot themselves in the foot" at all with this one. People need to remember that we big-time fans who post on boards like this are a TINY fraction of the audience for these movies.

They totally did, and not even in the foot but point blank. I wasn't talking about what comic fans think so I don't get why you brought this up. I said they put themselves into a situation where they tried to convince people that the white girl has any chance against the black chick(or the Albanian chick I guess) and in the end trying to make it seem as if Clemons gets the role because she was the best choice for it. As if anyone would believe they might choose Boynton over her. That was the point, it has nothing to do with what some perceived vocal minority of comic fans think. You don't need to know that Iris is Caucasian to see what they were trying to do here.

Umm, no that's not true. Like not even a little. The GA doesn't obsess of the BTS casting choices like we do, it's that simple. They're don't think like that. I guarandamntee you if you told the average person on the street about this:

-First of all, they probably won't know what you're talking about because they don't follow the BTS casting stuff. They'll find out who the choice is when it's announced, and go with it.

-They won't be thinking that this was a publicity stunt or other such nonsense.

Sorry dude, but WB/DC ain't shooting themselves it. Heck only a couple of people here have even floated that idea, most people are more than happy with this choice. So no, no "shooting themselves" to be had here, it's just that simple.

Umm, yes it is. I have no problem with the choice. At all. I'm just pointing out how hilarious it is that they put a white girl in the running for this role to give the false narrative that she might actually have a chance to win the role, just to "cover their bases" after they announce Clemons, like KillerWolf mentioned earlier on. Again, this isn't about any general audience or comic fans. Let's agree to disagree I guess.

Yes poor pretty white actress, she'll never get any roles in Hollywood because of all of those black actresses stealing all of the roles. There is nothing Hollywood hates more than white actors.

Furthermore the role actually hasn't been cast yet so you still might get a white Iris. Don't lose hope!

Really reminds me of Nathalie Emmanuel of Game of Throes and FF.

I never said Clemons was "stealing" anyone's role. Don't even try to twist my words.

Just don't reply to me. If you assume my comments were based on any kind of racial prejudice towards Kiersey Clemons, you're useless to talk to.

WB is getting a good looking girl who is also a good actress and in the right age bracket to play an important character and we love the casting, that's what matters anyway. We should be very happy and positive about this decision.

I don't mind Clemons or Ora for the role, myself. Though the third girl sorta stands out, haha.

Does the GA even know who Iris West is?… I mean not everyone watches the tv show either.

Now Ezra's jewish ad lib and bromance with Vic is starting to make sense to me. I'm guessing Barry's supposed to be a jewish Hip Hop head brought up in an urban neighborhood (since his mom is dead and his pop is in jail). NY jews are almost as responsible for the spread of the rap muzaks as us latinos and blacks. I think this is the angle they're going with the character. There's still going to be a lot of familiar elements from the comics (nerdy, forensic scientist, sarcastic). Famuyiwa's been devouring them apparently. But it's seem like they're still incorporating a fresh new spin. If this is direction they're going for then I'm in.

Like I said Central City being depicted like how you said is cool. I like Famuyiwa take of characters from such communities. He really knows how to tell underdog stories.

I hope she has long hair… I don't want them to go away from the look Iris has in the comic s. They can change the race, the appearance and features should stay the same.
