King of Fighters XIV

Yeah, 50 for what seems to be a new engine and all is quite something. I'm wondering if maybe that means there will a lot of clones, though? Had to imagine that are going to program 50 unique characters under a new engine with having to build new assets.

All 50 Characters Will Be Available For The King of Fighters XIV At Launch. December 11, 2015 . 5:00am

The King of Fighters XIV battle director Yasuyuki Oda recently had some details to share on the game’s roster
and a few tidbits on the future of the upcoming fighter.

SNK Playmore recently got to show off some of the latest characters for The King of Fighters XIV during PlayStation Experience last week, and battle director Yasuyuki Oda had more to share about the roster in an interview with Famitsu.

Famitsu asks about the 50 characters, which started with Kyo and Iori, followed by several popular characters. They ask if it’ll keep trending this way for the character revealed.

“We’ve selected these characters after having examined things such as ‘if we put in this character, then it’d make everyone happy,’ and such,” explains Oda.

That said,he’s asked if that means all 50 characters have already been decided.

“Yes, we’ve already decided on them,” responds Oda.

Next, Famitsu asks if he can share something like a ratio between preexisting and new characters for The King of Fighters XIV.

“I can’t say much on that, but it’s safe to assume ‘since there are 50 characters, then perhaps a character who was popular will appear in it’,” says Oda with a laugh.

On the subject of new characters, Famitsu asks if they’ll have some kind of elements or features that the preexisting characters from the series don’t already have.

“Hmm, yes. When making new characters, we think ‘make completely new elements’ and ‘it’s necessary to challenge’,” answers Oda. “Such experiences are necessary for a developer, and I believe that it’s wrong to not do that.”

He then explains that back in the Neo Geo days, there was a time when The King of Fighters were releasing on a yearly basis, so they weren’t always able to do things the way they wanted due to not having enough time; however, now that they have plenty of time, they’re able to put in the extra effort into the new characters.

Famitsu says that it sounds like a lot of trouble to make adjustments on all 50 characters to make it on time for release next year, and asks if all 50 of them will actually be playable at launch, with that in consideration.

“That’ll be fine. All 50 characters will be playable at launch,” says Oda. “There will be numerous characters at launch, and we don’t plan on just adding more bits at a time, so please be sure to properly jot that down [laughs]. It wouldn’t be a KoF game with a small number of characters, after all.”

Finally, Famitsu mentions that it’s the norm for fighters these days to add more characters through updates, so having 50 right off the bat should make quite an impact. Oda says that the “50 characters at launch” is their current selling point.

Famitsu asks if there’s a chance that we may see additional characters after launch.

“That will have to wait until we see how the 50 character do after launch, so it has yet to be decided,” says Oda.

As for whether The King of Fighters XIV will become its own series with newer versions or whether they’ll go to The King of Fighter XV, Oda says he’s still uncertain, but up until now the stories in the series have been told through three titles each, and he can just say that XIV will mark the beginning of a new chapter.

The King of Fighters will release in 2016 for PlayStation 4.

Atlus to publish The King of Fighters XIV in the Americas

SNK Playmore-developed fighter due out in 2016.

Atlus-KoF14-Americas-Publish.jpg

Atlus U.S.A. will publish SNK Playmore’s The King of Fighters XIV for PlayStation 4 in North America in 2016, the company announced.

The King of Fighters XIV uses the series’ traditional three-versus-three battle system and features an expansive roster of 50 characters, all of whom are available in-game at launch. It is the series’ first entry that uses 3D graphics, and the game’s fighting engine has been meticulously refined to be more streamlined and approachable for newcomers.

There are also improvements made to the “Combo” and “MAX Mode” game mechanics, and the “RUSH” feature, which adds simplified combo inputs for novices. The game also offers a “Party Battle” feature which pits two teams of three human players against each other in cooperative online team battles. A new Training Mode will let beginners and experienced players connect for tutoring.

Here’s a full rundown of the game’s features, via Atlus:

  • 3D Evolution: All 50 fighters, movesets and more are rendered in full 3D graphics that preserves the essence of King of Fighters‘s visual style but updates it with a whole new dimension.
  • The Best Refinement since The King of Fighters ’98: Through extensive playtesting and balancing, the controls have been streamlined, and the Combo and Max Mode mechanics have been overhauled to create the most competitive fighter in SNK’s history.
  • The The King of Fighters Saga Continues: There’s a robust single-player storyline where several years have passed since the previous The King of Fighters tournament. Now a worldwide business, the global The King of Fighters will decide who is the strongest as both individuals and companies with their own ambitions have come to compete. Players compete against CPU-controlled opponents to unlock the storyline.
  • The Best Roster Yet: There are 50 fighters total, with 31 returning from previous entries into the The King of Fighters series, and 19 brand new characters. All 50 characters will be available at the game’s launch.
  • Revamped Online Experience: The King of Fighters XIV has devoted a lot of development time to improving the game’s netcode for vastly improved online gameplay. The King of Fighters XIV uses the PS4’s online architecture to have a whole host of online conveniences, from spectating to saving replay/battle data, and having a single online The King of Fighters XIV profile to connect with friends.
If you missed it, catch the game’s latest teaser trailer (and character reveal) here.

& Friends: amiibo Challenge hits North America this week, John Romero has a new game on the way, and finally, Wolverine is going to bare his claws in the latest X-Men movie.
Get ready to return to the alien world of Pandora. No, not Avatar. This weekend at PAX East, Gearbox officially confirmed that Borderlands 3 is in the early stages of development. The studio has long hinted that they’re working on a new game in the series, but now we finally know for sure that it’s on the way. It might not be called Borderlands 3, though. Gearbox CEO and president Randy Pitchford says they’re thinking about calling it Borderlands 4, apparently to account for the un-numbered Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, which was released in 2014. Expect to learn more about Borderlands 3, or 4, in the coming months.
Rock Band 4 is getting something that it should have had all along. Harmonix has announced that they’re working on an online multiplayer mode for the game, which will be available via an update this holiday season. That seems like a long time to wait, but better late than never. Rock Band 4 was panned by critics for launching without online multiplayer, a feature that has been a staple of the franchise ever since it began back in 2007. Hopefully it will be worth the wait.
PS4 gamers are getting some intense, 3-on-3 fighting action this summer. The King of Fighters XIV will launch in North America on August 23, followed by a Japanese release two days later on August 25. Yes, that means western gamers are actually getting a Japanese game BEFORE Japan, so thankfully we won’t have to wait months or even years for it to be localized. Exclusive to the PS4, this is the first King of Fighters game built for a next-gen console, and brings back many of the classic game modes that were missing in 2010’s King of Fighters XIII.
Prepare to get some more use out of your amiibo figures later this week. The new game Mini Mario & Friends amiibo Challenge will be available to download on the Wii U and 3DS this Thursday, April 28. Released in Japan earlier this year, amiibo Challenge is a classic Nintendo-style side-scroller, with each compatible amiibo figure unlocking new characters and levels. Best of all, the game is free, although you’ll obviously have to spend some dough to buy the amiibo figures in the first place. This is the first game built specifically for the amiibos, and many fans are hoping that there will be bigger and better amiibo-specific games in the future.
An old PC gaming icon is coming in from the cold. Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake co-creator John Romero has announced a new project called Blackroom. He hasn’t released any gameplay footage yet, but says it will be a return to classic, first-person shooter style combat, with fast-paced and violent action. A Kickstarter campaign is currently underway and the game is slated to launch in Winter 2018. This will be one of John Romero’s first major projects since directing the infamous Daikatana in the year 2000, which was a massive bomb. That was developed by Romero’s own Ion Storm, a company that went under due to mismanagement. Hopefully Blackroom does better.
Spoiler Alert! Marvel’s most famous mutant just couldn’t resist sinking his claws into another movie. The latest trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse has arrived, teasing the surprise appearance of none other than Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Although there were rumours that the adamantium-reinforced hero would appear in the film, this is the first official confirmation. It’s unclear exactly how big his part will be this time around, but since this is the first we’re hearing about it, we wouldn’t be surprised if he’s only in a few scenes. The fact that he’s appearing at all is welcome news for fans. Jackman is planning to hang up his claws and retire from the role following the character’s third solo film, due in 2017, so we’ll take all the Wolverine we can get. X-Men: Apocalypse will bring the destruction to theatres on May 27.

Video Comparison Proves King of Fighters XIV Is Just As Fast As Previous Games . May 8, 2016 . 3:30pm

Despite many proclaiming that the game plays slower than previous installations in the series, a recent video comparison proves King of Fighters XIV is just as fast as its predecessors.

18 comments Read >

20160507_163220_thumb.png
King of Fighters XIV will release for the PlayStation 4 this summer, yet some have expressed their worry regarding the way the game appears to play, noting that it appears markedly slower than previous installations in the series. Despite this, many who have played the game insist there is nothing wrong with the speed. [Thanks, Shoryuken.]

To prove which side of this debate is actually correct, YouTube user Orpheus Santos has created a comparison video by taking pieces of gameplay from KOFXIV and then recreating the same situations in King of Fighters 2002 and King of Fighters XIII, as well as the KOF fangame King of Fighters WING.

Interestingly, the results of the comparison show that King of Fighters XIV’s gameplay is just as fast as previous games, excluding the additional cinematic starter animation for some combos.

To get a look at the similarities for yourself, you can check out the comparison footage below.

Here are details about each character:

  • Kyo Kusanagi – Kyo Kusanagi is the legitimate heir of the ancestral arts of the Kusanagi clan. Despite his seemingly rude and arrogant demenanor, he has innate gifts for fighting, and can reduce any of his opponents into ashes via his pyrotechnic skills. Iori Yagami is his “eternal enemy”.
  • Benimaru Nikaido – Born of American and Japanese parents, Benimaru is a young son of a multi-millionaire family. This genius fighter specializes in shooting and electricity-based techniques. Benimaru is also Kyo’s best friend and friendly rival.
  • Goro Daimon – Former gold medalist in judo at the Olympic Games, Goro decided one day to improve his discipline by adding new techniques such as “tremendous earthquakes”. He later joined Kyo and Benimaru to participate in the KOF Tournament. Goro always seems to have a very serious expression, but he is a hard-worker.

The King of Fighters XIV ‘Yagami Team’ gameplay trailer

Iori Yagami, Mature, and Vice.

KOF14-Trailer_05-18-16.jpg

SNK has released the second in its series of “Team Gameplay” trailers for The King of Fighters XIV . This one introduces the Yagami Team.

Here are details about each character:

  • Iori Yagami – Iori is the last descendant of the Yagami clan, an ancient family linked to the Three Sacred Treasures. Iori fights the enemies on his way via his sharp claws and purple flames. Since a blood pact concluded with Orochi, he sometimes enters a state of “Riot of the Blood” madness. The Kusanagi and Yagami clans have been fighting each other for more than 660 years.
  • Mature – Mature was once one of the 8 members of the “Hakkeshu” brotherhood, who were plotting for the resurrection of the “Orochi” divinity. Mature fights with fluid and very quick movements, and lacerates her enemies with the sharp edge of her hands. In contrast to Vice, Mature is a cold-hearted realist.
  • Vice – FVice was once one of the eight members of the Orochi clan, which lurked in the shadows in order to revive the eponymous divinity. Despite her frail stature, the very violent and cruel Vice possesses superhuman strusth and excels in grappling moves, body slams, and shoulder charges. She shows interest in Iori whose Orochi blood flows in his veins.
