Why does everyone on krypton have a British accent!! I mean geez!! Superman is the creation of 2 American kids. But somehow the characters sound like they’re from Liverpool.

    Because of Marlon Brando.

    Amazingly, accents aren't genetic.

Maybe Krypton is where the Galactic Empire got a lot of their officer recruits from.

They have British or Irish accents because the show is film in the UK with mostly British and Irish actors.

Much of the old Reeves Superman films were filmed in the UK as well and had British actors as Kryptonians.

I'm not sure what the big deal is. Kryptonians are aliens and could have any accent.

Using “British” to convey a foreign/alien/exotic language is a pretty standard convention.

Granted, it’s not the only possibility. But those alternatives would likely elicit a different set of complaints. It’s damned if you do, damned if you don’t. :word:

Yeah, that’s how Hollywood always likes to do these things.

Well, one option would be to have Kryptonians speak “General American” (the so-called “newscaster accent”). But this implies a certain cultural bias and homogeneity - that (ideally) aliens should sound a lot like mainstream, white Americans. The other option (which is my preference) is to go “cosmopolitan.” Hire an international cast and have them speak in their normal/natural accents. MOS did this for its version of Krypton. But even with this approach, there were smart-alecky comments about Jor-El sounding like an Aussie. (And how did Lara pick up an Israeli accent?)

Like I said, there’d be some complaints no matter which convention was used.

A fictional species, on a fictional world, in a fictional universe - and you've got a problem with their accents? Oh dear! :p

I knew someone would throw out the usual “it’s fictional “ card , they can’t find a good reason for it.

Superman is an American creation. For Everyone in this show to be talking like Paul McCartney, just took me by surprise. It’s still a great show.

That's what a Kandor accent sounds like. We may not have heard anyone from the other city-states.

It’s worth it just to have Wallis Day in the series. She steals the show as Nyssa-Vex the same way Madeline Petsch steals the show as Cheryl Blossom on Riverdale.

Can you give me a good reason as to why an Alien world would be inhabited by Americans? :woot:

It's clearly a creative choice to create the illusion of a different world and life style. I don't understand the saltiness. Clark will always be a good ole boy from Kansas. Krypton show doesn't destroy your child hood hero.

Funny there's no complaints when the last survivors of every apocalyptic movies are American.

I've been a fan of the CW show The 100. They make a clear point that the last survivors of humanity all live together on a space station. Different countries from around the globe ALL speaking American? Funny thing is the actors themselves are all international. Australian, UK, Canadian etc.
