CW Eyes ‘Tales From The Darkside’ Reboot With Alex Kurtzman, Bob Orci & Joe Hill
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

After successfully rebooting Whose Line Is It Anyway last summer, the CW is looking to bring back another half-hour series this coming summer. The network has teamed with producers Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci and writer Joe Hill for Tales From The Darkside, a reinvention of the 1980s horror/fantasy/thriller anthology series by George A. Romero. Hill will write the project, which will keep the original series’ 30-minute format, for a summer run consideration. Hill, Kurtzman and Orci will executive produce with Heather Kadin, Mitch Galin and Jerry Golod for CBS TV Studios, where Kurtzman and Orci’s K/O Paper Products is based. The project reunites Kurtzman and Orci with Hill, son of horror master Stephen King. The three previously worked together on Locke & Key, a drama adaptation of Hill’s graphic novel, which went to pilot at Fox. Tales From The Darkside, which is in the vein of other genre anthology series like Amazing Stories, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits and Tales From The Crypt, had a four-year syndicated run and is owned by CBS TV Studios sibling CBS TV Distribution. (You can watch the intro below.) CAA-repped Kurtzman and Orci, executive producers of Fox’s breakout drama Sleepy Hollow, have two other broadcast projects in development through their CBS TV Studios deal — a high concept drama with writer Nick Santora and director Justin Lin, which has a put pilot commitment at CBS, and a sibling terrorist drama at the CW.
Never seen the original. But Joe Hill, you say? I'll give it a look.

If it's even 1/2 as scary as some of the original ones from the 80's were I'll give them a pat on the back.

The music for the opening for the original series was creepy on its own.

Ive read Horns, Heart Shaped Box, and more apt for the thread, his collection of short stories, 20th Century Ghosts, and he's a really talented and entertaining writer. I hope he can adapt some of his short stories for the television show.

With this (presumably) being an old school anthology series in the sense of one-and-done stories each episode, I wonder what kind of talent they'll be able to get on board for this with the promise of being able to tell a full story in one episode, rather than a season or a full series. I guess news about the pilot will give us some idea...

Wasn't Tales from the Darkside a bootleg Twilight Zone/Outer Limits? The only thing I remember from watching repeats as a kid was the opening sequence being creepy as hell.

I'm pretty sure that every episodic horror/sci-fi anthology is a riff on The Twilight Zone or Outer Limits in one way or another. Unless you're Tales From The Crypt and you've got source material pre-dating both shows.

Kris Lemche To Star In ‘Tales From The Darkside’ CW Pilot
by Nellie Andreeva

Kris Lemche has been cast as the lead in the CW drama pilot Tales From The Darkside, a remake of the 1980s horror/fantasy/thriller anthology series that hails from writer Joe Hill and producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

The anthology series will feature only one regular character, Newman (Lemche). A weathered and tortured young man, Newman is the guide to the unsuspecting who come across The Darkside. Newman – a man with his own desperate, wrenching secrets – knows exactly what’s causing the terrifying Darkside Events that drive the series. What he doesn’t know is how to stop them.

Hill, Kurtzman and Orci executive produce with Heather Kadin, Mitch Galin and Jerry Golod for CBS TV Studios.

Canadian-born Lemche, a Gemini Award best actor in a drama series winner for CBC’s Emily Of New Moon, is recurring on ABC’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. His recent feature credits include indies Alter Egos and Legend Of Hell’s Gate. He is repped by LINK Entrainment.

Lemche is f'n crazy great. Oh and li'l secret: the show is really called DARKSIDE, not TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE. Same DNA, different animals.

IMDB says that Bradley Buecker, who has directed a number of American Horror Story episodes, is directing this. Odd that only one actor has been announced, though, especially considering that Joe Hill tweeted that they were filming a few days ago. Wonder if they might have some semi-notable actors involved and want to maintain the surprise for later.

So it's kinda like Friday the 13th and Gravity Falls.

Is this going to be strictly anthology-based like Twilight Zone? Because I'm into that if so. I mean, you can't really expect a CW show to be on the level of TZ but I've always like that kind of format.

It'll be anthology, but Deadline also says that the actor who has been cast will be the one series regular character. So I kinda wonder how that will work out. Maybe he'll be like Pariah in Crisis on Infinite Earths, forced to move from place to place and witness one terrible thing after another.

Traditionally, the CW’s new series orders always have had both sibling studios represented, so one of the two CBS Studios pilots, Cheerleader Death Squad and anthology Tales from the Dark Side — both pushing the network’s brand into new directions — will likely get the nod.
If they have to choose, here's hoping they go with Darkside.

Bummed this one didn't get picked up.
