Comics Latest My Cup O' Joe--Quesada drops a Spider-Man related bombshell

Oh, I'm not discounting that, for the most part, there was some planning before hand, what with their writers summits and everything. But, as Farmer pointed out, plans can change. After all, it's one thing to outline a story but it's another thing to actually write it. After all, according to Steve Wacker, they knew why Harry was back but didn't yet have a working story as to how to fit this in until later. And it's pretty apparent that, while they knew One More Day was going to be controversial, Marvel grossly underestimated the intensity and length of the backlash from fans.

Also, if it took multiple writers a full year and 40 plus issues just to set things up, then something is really, really wrong, regardless of whether the stories were planned out ahead of time or not.
I think this is a huge logical fallacy that "anti-BNDers" (can't believe I just wrote that) use way too often. You can't look at it as if one year of BND = three years worth of stories. The way these stories are structured and told is dependent on the scheduling. If a writer is told he has three weeks worth of ASM, then he can stretch out his story over three issues; if he's only given one week, he can compress the story into just one issue. The stories are being written to take advantage of the new schedule. It isn't three years worth of stories told in one year, it's one year's worth of stories being stretched out over 3x the amount of issues.

In other words, are you admitting the rotating schedule allows for more decompression of the stories to take place? I don't necessarily consider that a good thing. After all, I would think it's a sign of better story craft if you can tell the story you want to tell in FEWER issues rather than more. Then again, the majority of today's comic book writers are essentially "writing for the trades" since trade paperbacks have more exposure to the buying public than monthlies.

Also, there's been interviews from the braintrust that suggest because each writer wanted to tell their own Spider-Man story, other writer's stories ended up getting delayed. Case in point, Guggenheim, in an interview where he talked about Character Assassination:

"The problem we’ve sometimes had since the Brand New Day status quo began is that even though we’re publishing three times a month, we haven’t had as much time to develop certain storylines because there’s so much going on,” Guggenheim confessed. “And since Carlie found the very first Spider-Tracer left by the killer back at the beginning of Brand New Day, we planned on her having a more active role throughout last year in terms of trying to hunt down the Spider-Tracer Killer. But we really didn't have the opportunity to do that much with her. So I wanted to work that in at the top of this arc.”

In other words, at least the way I'm reading, Guggenheim is essentially admitting that BECAUSE of the rotating schedule of creative teams (which includes some of the more admittedly well-written filler arcs and stories, I imagine), plot and character development has sometimes ended up getting short-changed even though it wasn't their intention. Part of the reason why the "three years worth of issues in one year" argument is brought up is that, had Brand New Day been a monthly comic rather than a tri-monthly comic, readers would have felt Amazing Spider-Man dragged more than even anything put out by Bendis.

I still dont understand why they had to choose Mephisto of all people, of all the super-powered beings in the marvel universe they had to choose the worst one for Peter to make a deal with. Hell, i would've been satisfied if he made a deal with Doom. Now THAT would have been interesting, but the freaking devil? the symbol of evil? Come on, this was the best they could come up with??

Yeah, and Doom has a time machine. It would have been better with Doom.

Except... anything you do after going back using Doom's time-machine just creates an alternate timeline.

I agree. I like the idea of bad guys running the world an all. But this is a bit unbelievable. What I find even more surprising is that now Norman is leading the likes of Doom etc...

Pete is always portrayed as the underdog. I bet you could put him up against a 10 year old girl and Spidey would barely survive. Same goes for Norman and his Dark Avengers.

Heheh...
Spidey: "That girl's jump rope somehow bypassed my Spider-sense! One more blow from that cheap handle, and I'm finished!"

10 yr old Girl: "That'll teach you! My daddy says you're a joke!"

Spidey: "Oh, no, here it comes! Aunt May....Betty....mystery wife I can't remember..."

Voice(off panel): "SUZY!!! Time for dinner!"

10 yr old Girl: "You got lucky this time, webslinger!"

hahahaha, that's great. I like how pete puts up more of a fight in this than in ASM.

Here's to hoping there's a back-up feature with this story in ASM #600 akin to the old Not Brand Echh comics...

That would be awesome! Hey, does anyone else remember Spidey's guest appearance in the old "Ren & Stimpy" comic that had him fighting Powdered Toast Man? I will always remember the scene that had Spider-Man getting beaten where he kept thinking of this loved ones, and he ended up thinking about people who he bowled with, and other random people.

Sorry, I'm trying to lighten this thread up in the most obscure way possible.

I still fondly remember a Not Brnad Echh story when Peter Parker/Spdier-Man married the Wasp, and when he took her home for Aunt May to meet her, she swatted his hand with a fly swatter while making "stupid bugs" comments...

Man, Marvel really needs some more lighthearted humor comics, don't they?

That's what Herc and Deadpool are for.

Also, check out MODOK's 11, a very underappreciated mini from a couple years ago.

I'm still waiting on that first Herc Hardcover.

Also, I miss Slott's She-Hulk, too. That was such a fun book. The Spidey issue especially was hilarious.
