Those Spinal Tap songs effing Rock.![]()
aw, thats bull, man. bob dylan and the beatles (particularly Lennon) had a huge affect on the 70's culture. who's songs do you think they were singing at protest rally's? those songs invigorated people to go out and make a difference and let their voices be heard. those songs made people look at their world and realize that they needed change, and the only way that was gonna happen is if they got out there and demanded it, and thats exactly what they did!Wilhelm-Scream said:
I despise socially conscious music. Songs can not change the world.
Nope, preaching to the choir.Motwon Marvel said:aw, thats bull, man.
I wasn't talking about the message. I included it under "gross", 'cause I don't want a repeating chorus that reminds me of when someone farts while you're on a road trip, or when a White Trash chick starts changing her baby's diaper in the movie theater, etc.Green Lantern said:Wilhelm, I've got to disagree with "That Smell"... it wasn't mean to change the world, it was meant to change the lifestyles of the members of the band. The "Whiskey bottles and brand new cars, Oak tree you're in my way." was a direct reference to Gary hitting an oak tree while in a drunken stupor in his new car. It was meant to save the band itself before it selfdestructed.

Of course anything that becomes popular enough is going to have an impact on the world, and of course there are stupid teenagers that become Vegan solely 'cause they heard Moby saying it would be cool if they'd do that.
This is not like a treatise on culture and societal evolution, it's for the drunken, head-banging part of the brain, that wants to tar and feather James Blunt and then crank up the Motorhead.
But again, I'll accept the power of popularity, and fund-raising, but I do not believe that without the song "Strange Fruit" we'd still have segregation and lynchings.
It's people like Martin Luther King jr. that cause real change, not Stevie Wonder. Socially conscious music is just the soundtrack that provides goosebumps, but NOT the inspiration for action.
You'd still have patriots if The Star-Spangled Banner had never been written, and people still would've been screaming for change wihtout "We Shall Overcome".
