The Dark Knight Ledger to be nominated as Best Actor?

Good post. Did Hopkins in Silence (with even less screen time than Heath) get the oscar for lead or supporting ? (granted TDK is more of an ensemble cast than Silence was).

Hopkins won for Best Actor and Foster won Best Actress. (Hopkins was only on screen for around 16 minutes!)

Still, I say Heath for Best Supporting.

Thanks.
Yeah, he probably has more chance in the supporting category. As long as he wins, that's all that matter to me. Not because he's gone but because I still haven't seen a more powerful performance this year.

Also I hope TDK gets a lot of oscars a la LOTR, even if they don't mean much anyway, it would be the cherry on top of the proverbial cake.

What are Ledger's chances of being nominated for Best Actress or Best Director? If he can switch categories, why not?

Quite good. Have we ever seen a more powerful performance of a nurse with a gun? I think not.

thats pretty funny but as some have already pointed out there is precedence for this.

having said that i think he should be in the supporting category

I think he is a great actor. I loved how he played The Joker in The Dark Knight. Really his performance was a masterpiece !

Christian Bale for Best Actor

Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor!

Nah he won't get a best actor nod, best supporting I think he should win flat out. Its a shame Bale didn't really make something more of his dual role (not entirely his fault *points at Jonathan Nolan*). Unless theres another groundbreaking timeless performance this year, I think we can already start the Ledger Oscar celebration.

I would love to see someone try to argue, logically, that heath's performance was a leading performance.

By no stretch of the imagination is this so.

Bottomline is he just needs to be nominated, preferably as supporting, but whatever the case, he just needs to be recognized for what really is the performance of the year

Ideally both Eckhart and Ledger would be nominated for an Oscar.

Eckhart has no chance. They absolutely hate giving noms to comic book movies, but cannot ignore Ledger. I will bet good money they will not give two acting nominations from The Dark Knight, no matter how good Eckhart was.

I wonder what other actors are going to be nominated this year in the supporting category. Anyway, they don't stand a chance:woot:.

How do you know that when nobody has deserved one yet?
But I do agree that Eckart wont be nominated.

funny, if you look at Dent his face isn't scarred on the left even though in that scene he's already two-face. I love being a dork on the internet muahahaha

That's because his face was pretty much all CGI.

And Heath getting the lead-award makes no sense imo. Just give him the Supporting Actor award.

I think Molina should have gotten one for SM2. He was really good in that. Nowhere near Heath of course (no one can touch him so far) but still a pretty good performance imo.

Official word from Warner Brothers on the matter:

Heath Ledger "100% Supporting"

That's the official word this morning from Warner Bros. as to how Heath Ledger will be campaigned for his riveting performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight. To which I say: smart move. I know some people were pulling for a Best Actor placement for the late star, but that just didn't feel right to me (nor, apparently, to the Warner Bros. people). Sure, Ledger had tons of screen time and is certainly the most memorable thing about the film. But the movie is called The Dark Knight, not The Joker. The only Best Actor candidate here should be Christian Bale.

But the most important thing to consider is his chance at the win. I doubt he'd have a shot at beating The Wrestler's Mickey Rourke, or Milk's Sean Penn, or Frost/Nixon's Frank Langella in the Best Actor race. But in the supporting category, his strongest likely competitor is Doubt's Philip Seymour Hoffman, coincidentally the man who defeated Ledger for Best Actor the only other time Ledger was nominated, for Brokeback Mountain. While Hoffman's Capote performance was the sure bet back then, this time it could be a true toss-up.
