155 characters total before DLC, which should add an extra 10-15.

From the count in the demo video there were 142 character cells, including the pre-order Iron Patriot

SDCC footage shows 155 slots, including the elusive 15-slot bottom row of the grid that's only visible for a couple of seconds in one of the videos.

Still, from my understanding, the roster is growing all the time so there may yet be further additions.

This. DLC characters confirmed or hinted so far include Black Suit Spider-Man, Classic Hawkeye, Falcon, Winter Soldier and Thanos.

I was going to say that if he were to be in, his unique outline would be noticeable in the character grid, but then again, no one could locate Daredevil because we thought he'd have prominent horns on the mask and they turned out to be drawn in instead, so anything is possible.

Phasing for Vision and Shadowcat, as well as teleporting for characters such as Nightcrawler, could be tricky, but then again they don't need to be phasing and bamf-ing all over the place. Character-specific grates or blocks that only they can use their abilities to get through are easy to implement.

I've never liked the look of the Lego franchise but this looks like a genuinely fun game with an absurd amount of characters I've loved since I discovered Marvel as a kid. Will get around to this after I beat the games I get at launch.

If you can get past the look, you'll find that this is an insanely fun and source-accurate franchise. Every single game is a gem, not just this one.
