lessons to learn from previous movies

let's name them down and hopefully they won't repeat the same mistakes.

to me, they always take superman fame for granted. that's he doesn't have to build it; the crowd will cheer for him automatically once he appears, or cry for him when he is in ICU.

most audiences are not superman fan. they regard them as corny.

i hope they will treat him as a 'new' superhero, establish him well in the movie.

Lessons that need to be learned...

Don't just throw actors together.. Characters need chemistry

SFX need to be believable.. None of that Routh turns into a cartoon bollocks.

A superman film needs to be SUPER.. Lots of action lots of Superman doing super things.

A Superman movie with genuine heart will be a huge hit but don't try to ape Donner's style. It won't be the same.

Absolutely. They need to make the audience feel like "okay, so this is completely different from your average superhero movie. This is really huge. This is Supermaaaaaaaaan." Yes, with the Leonidas voice and everything.

Back in the 70's, it was enough to say that we would believe a man could fly. Post-2000, we get it. We have the Matrix movies. We have giant robots that turn into cars and look lifelike while doing it. Mutants and space monsters are now commonplace in blockbuster action movies. Its not enough to have Superman slowly flying around and lifting something really heavy. Again, back in 1978, that would have looked really cool. Now, its commonplace. We need more than that.

so do i! i want people to talk about this movie like people talk about the dark knight, something as epic today as superman the movie was 30 years ago. i just want this to be epic and held in high regard, not jsut another superhero movie, i think the right creative people are in place to make it happen. i want the man of steel to be the event movie, with a trailer attached to the dark knight rises that has people talking from july to release about a nolan and co superman

what have we learned
1) should be super
2) no made up villians
3) marketing

3. Unneccessary use of CGI when practical effects are better
4. Use the best bits from Superman 3, ie take off scenes, landing, and the shirt rip.
5. Don't make a plot which makes a sequel have big problems, ie super child.

Dont take Superman for granted. Throw in some new surprises and take it to a new level. Bring back the SUPERman.

1. yes he needs to be the star much like Batman was in Batman Begins or Superman himself in Superman the Movie
2. Yes no memory wipe kisses etc
3. Yes in Superman Returns way too much CGI Superman
4. I do want to see classic Superman moments i.e. the shirt rip

Yeah it just needs to be EPIC thats the main thing, I dont think Superman Returns didnt do well because it was a Superman film but because it wasnt marketed very well.

No, but i'm sure he will have a big say so in how it goes down..I would think he would look at whats planned and approve it or not.
If he didnt like what was planned, he could get WB to replace them.

A couple of other things...

I was watching some of Superman II and I had forgotten just how cheesy certain parts were. During the Metropolis battle, Superman, Zod and everyone else were fine... but the stupid BYSTANDERS were ridiculous. So let me get this straight... Superman shows up and its battling to the death with super-powered terrorists that have just taken over America... and people are just going about their business, buying food at KFC and eating ice cream?

Also, totally agree on the made-up powers note. The scene when they go back to the Fortress of Solitude just becomes a "whatever powers we can pull out of our asses" moment. First, we have Super-Saran Wrap, then energy blasts, then teleportation, then teleportation with holograms... it's just too much.

I agree. Call me wrong for wanting it, but to be realistic about it, you would have a high civilian casualty count in a battle between supes and a superpowered villain..It's not like said villain would wait for the city to evacuate first before he attcks, so the number of injuries and dead would be high.
I hope snyder shows that..if nothing else, show the casualty count on a news broadcast.

Yeah, it doesn't have to be excessive, but it shouldn't be like a G.I. Joe cartoon where everyone miraculously survives every horrifying act of destruction.

agreed, but I have to say that I like comic relief civilian bystanders. They were awesome in SII, who doesn't love the guy on the roller skates, or the guy wearing the 'end of the world' sign.

The comedic degree they were taken too was a little bit too far. But I do like the funny crowd reactions. More recent examples I can think of that were more tasteful, was the handful of comedic bystander reactions in the Spiderman movies. None too over the top, yet pleasantly pleasing (the black street salesman who calls spiderman a thief etc.)

just one actually, more than one would become redundant. That's movie climax type of material.

well, i don't like to see a lot of people injured in a superman film. u know, superman was there. he should be able to save them all while fighting the villains and stopping the disasters. that's why he called SUPERman. ha.

unless... it's a plot that gives an excuse to the government/ luthor to go against superman. - chase him out from the earth.

Well said, but it would add an extra layer of emotion to the film when it is clear that not even THE Superman can save everyone.

surely not everyone. but most / some of them.
and yet the crowds complaint that superman didn't save them. so they went against superman... something like that.
