He kinda does with the Silver Samurai (briefly), bit it's not really the same. It is a shame he didn't fight Shingen or SS with a proper Katana. It does seem like an obvious missed opportunity and is a bit annoying given all the cool posters depicting him wielding a sword in one hand and his claws popped out in another.

As I have said in other threads I'm really miffed we didnt get to see what happened to the sword Yashida gave to Logan in the end, just a small scene with him at the end on the plane as a momento of his time in Japan would have been awesome.

I kind of got forgotten.

If Yashida hadn't turned out to be the villain then him taking the sword would have been nice, but it pretty much lost its value when the SS was revealed.

Still, Yukio could always teach Logan how to wield a Katana in the future. She is his 'bodyguard' after all.

Just saw it and thought it was pretty good. Solid 8/10, but still behind my favorite, MOS (9/10). I'll see it again when I get it on Bluray to verify this, but I think this suffered from what I call The Inception Effect. When Inception came out, all of my friends called it best movie ever. But when I finally got to see it I was like, meh, it's pretty good. Reading all of the amazing user reviews and getting hyped might have hurt my review.

Hugh is solid as always and I loved the more personal tone. The third act was a bit jarring to me and I felt, other than being hot, Viper was not needed. I really was hoping for a gritty, grounded and personal fight at the end that matched the rest of the tone, but that's not what we got.

Lastly, the bonus scene was neat. It wasn't mind blowing or impressive or leaving me wanting more. Just neat. It basically screamed, "Hey! Did you know there's a new X-Men movie coming out?" and I was like..."Yup...knew it for a while."

just got back and i really liked this movie only thing i didn't like was the wolverine origins like third act thats the only thing that holds it back from beating mos for me

it felt like 1st 2 acts were from the last samurai and when logans rides his bike to the base he enters x men origins lol

8.5/10

Claremont really liked the movie, and I agree with what he said about the third act. He said that it wasn't bad per se, it was just tonally very different from the rest of the film. I didn't mind it, it just took some getting used to.

I'll be curious to see if the shift in tone is as abrupt once we see this extended version that's reportedly coming to blu-ray.

I'm hoping so too. I know nothing can undo the SS/Yashida thing, but I'd love an extended ninja sequence and hopefully more brutal fights all round. Does anyone know if the Shingen fight may be longer in any potential director's cut? I personally think that fight could have been dragged out a bit longer.

Yeah I think he's completely on the money with that statement, because when I'm at work and I'm checking on the film, by itself all the third act stuff I have absolutely no problem with, in fact I find it more exciting when watching it alone, but that first time watching the entire film it came off strange, but I don't think there's actually anything bad in it. It kind of goes from a more intimate and unique japanese influenced wolverine movie to a more expected and conventional X-Men movie in act 3 I feel. But it wasn't enough to stop me loving the film as a whole.

Yup. Claremont nailed it. That's why I think so many people are claiming the third act is rubbish. It's really not, it's just so dynamically different from what came before that if you're not ready to roll with the punches it's jarring. It's akin to watching a serious thriller that quickly shifts gears into an action movie without pause (and that happens quite a bit).

Thankfully it regains its original footing for the last few scenes and didn't end on that comic booky note.

On the upside of that shift. It's also another strong moment for Mariko's character (and Yukio's as she faces Viper).

I loved this movie thoroughly so maybe I'm a little biased but that 3rd act didnt bug me as much as it did a lot of people...I felt the movie did a good job of building up to it...If I were to watch The Departed which was a crime drama film through and through with some action here and there...but if they wanted to end the film with an explosive and loud run and gun action sequence it wouldnt take away from the rest of the movie to me it'd just be like damn they went all out at the end... didnt expect that but didnt mind it either...thats the same way I feel about this movie.

it is kinda like sunshine another film sanada was in where the 3rd act hurts the movie due to it's tonal shift

I get where the complaints are coming from, but it didn't really bother me. I didn't think it was terribly over-the-top, at least not enough for it affect how much I enjoyed the movie as a whole.

I thought it was cool that the ladies had a big part in the final fight, and it wasn't just some damsel-in-distress thing.

Yeah I can definitely see that. That movie kind of changed genres in the third act, but in the end it's still a film I'd recommend.

Yeah I know of a few people who have completely let it affect how they feel about the entire movie. One friend told me the movie was a mess and lost its way half way through, but then just mentioned the third act. I can't put a movie down for what amounts to about 10 minutes. I can't do it. Especially with this because I don't feel like I'm apologizing for the movie either because it's not a guilty pleasure type of movie. I legitimately really like this movie from beginning to end.

been thinking about this film since i got back tonight and more i think about it i think it is my fav. cbm of the year it beats man of steel for me

it did right what mos did wrong it let the film breathe and it let the audience take in and feel the drama and didn't rush it,they let the drama and character moments soak in for the viewer

yup if anything it was the other way around
Logan needed the help from Yukio and Mariko, SS was tearing him apart and he still had to deal with Viper.

With everything I'd heard going in, I expected something much worse. There were definitely more pros than cons for me about it, so it didn't mess up what I thought of the movie overall.

Ok, saw it again and my 5.5/10 rating was unchanged. They could have called this The Wolverine: The Movie Where Things Happen.

Sometimes those things are exciting and entertaining(e.g. train sequence) but most of the time they seem like there isn't enough of a story or narrative glue to hold them all together. I maintain that with the exception of the Viper chick(who seems like she's in the wrong movie) virtually all of the individual parts of this film are fine on their own(something I can't say about XO:W). But whoever wrote this is the one letting all of them down. Damn shame too, because this could have been such a good movie. All they needed was a better writer.

I'll likely never see this one again on purpose. Maybe if I'm flipping channels one day and it's on then I might see it but that's all I can say about it.

The movie followed the comic more than I thought that it would, so you probably wouldn't like that as well. It was a character piece on Wolverine, and I loved that.

I find it hard to believe that the comic was this narratively disjointed. Not if Claremont was writing it.

I don't think I'll ever understand how anyone could call this movie disjointed. Trance was disjointed. The Lone Ranger was disjointed. This movie had dedicated pacing for the first 90 minutes. Cause and effect throughout and no plot holes within the context of the story.

one thing i also loved was that in all of the dark gritty serious tone it still had tons of cute comedic moments

-logan being bathed and shaved by the Japanese women
- his interaction with yukio
- love hotel scene - mission to mars!!
- you got 10 words
etc.
